Quick Question: How do I tell what kind of material my wall is? As in plasterboard, drywall, brick etc. Whats the best and easiest way to find that out? Looking to hang a mirror, its about 5foot and a decent weight but want to know material I will be hanging it onto so I can get the appropriate fixings for it.
Thanks :-)

Knock on it with your knuckles and it it sounds hollow then it’s drywall and if not then likely brick.

Easiest way to find out is to open a socket or light switch and have a look.
Most of the cheaper new builds in the last 25 years will be timber frame with plasterboard(also known as dryall), some of the more expensive new builds may be block walls with plasterboard over.
Older houses tend to be brick/blockwork with a plaster finish.
If hanging the mirror on plasterboard, try to anchor to the stud work (make sure it's wooden and not metal stud work).
If the wall is brick/block, use a good masonry fixing/anchor that is rated for the job. Some folk will use rawl plugs but if the hole isn't drilled correctly their pretty much useless.
