At 35 years of age, having had a career with some serious injuries, and playing very little football recently - this man continually looks unphased by being thrown back into the team.
I thought he was just about faultless tonight. Starting his first league match in absolutely ages, up against the best team in Scotland and he didn't look out of place.
That spot is his to lose IMO.

Hopefully puts an end to the piss poor chat about the length of his contract and him taking up a space on the bench. Proved against the best team in the league that he still has a lot to offer.

Excellent tonight, and it was interesting to hear Joe Newell say before the game that he's still one of the fittest and fastest we have.
It begs the question though - why has he not been used more? We've played a lot of games, we've looked very tired at times and the defence that looked like one of the best in the league at the start of the season has recently looked like one of the worst.
Surely he would have been good for even a bit part role?
And if McGregor looks like that coming in from cold storage, is there any chance that David Gray could do the same?
If we have a cup run in the Scottish, we might need to use every part of our squad.

To be fair, I was a little concerned before the game as he had an absolute mare in a game earlier this season - second Dundee league cup game maybe? Or perhaps when he came on v St. Johnstone at home.
Shouldn’t have worried though. Was immense tonight.

Felt like we definitely had a leader on the pitch.
Loved his interview - just need someone solid alongside him. I would be tempted to try sign another CB as 3 isn’t enough and Gogic isn’t going to drop back unless it’s an emergency.

Darren played really well tonight but I don’t think it’s a toss up for his playing partner. Hanlon playing on McGregor’s left brings balance to that part of the team.
Unfortunately Ryan made another costly mistake for their goal tonight and he needs rested and reinvigorated before returning to the team.

I have a horrible feeling he’ll get cited by the compliance officer for the incident with Kamara, just to even it up when Morelos gets pulled for his stamp.
Not that it’s deserved in any way.

David Gray was huge reason for our turnaround after relegation and I think we need him or Daz in the starting team at the moment to get the spirit back, not both as I do think their best days are gone but you are waiting for the big challenge and they never disappoint.
If we were a free flowing attacking team on a perfect lawn of a pitch I'd be less in favour but we're playing on a tattie field lumping long balls up field, perfect for both of them to be honest

Interesting to hear Doig say DM talked him through the game. I'm sure Porteous said the same when he broke into the team a couple of years ago. He had a solid game and gave his all as expected.

Absolute certainty that will happen.
Referee at least gave a yellow so would have to totally overrule his decision on Daz with the new ruling of changing a refs original card but they have the excuse that with Morelos Clancy could say his angle wasn't the best to see stamping motion etc.
I'm confident Daz will be ok and Morelos will get 3 game ban but of course that doesn't help us and doesn't harm Rangers other than they have to replace a good player in their team with another good player for 3 matches. Joke

In a football context the guy is a hero. Been a damn good player at every club he’s been at but pulled something extra out the bag when he signed for us.
Remember being genuinely shocked at how delighted he seemed to be signing for us after leaving Rangers and what a servant he’s been.

He can be charged if it's deemed that the referee missed an aspect of the challenge/incident that may have changed his on-field decision.

Should have been made captain ahead of Hanlon. Absolutely clear as day he's a better leader and by the looks of it still a better player despite being 35.

I wouldnt be against that. For as long as we can keep him fit. As others said when we are up against it he's a great defender. Porto will struggle at LCB tho. Maybe we play all 3 whilst we get through this sticky patch in form. I'd take a bunch of 1-0 wins for the next month or so.

Hanlon isn't officially captain.
He is also not a better player. Today suited him well. Over a season he doesn't reach Hanlons level, hence why Hanlon is always picked ahead of him. Excellent performance against Rangers from McGregor, no doubt but as I said, it suited him perfectly. When we have all the ball and he is required to move it into midfield, he struggles.

He's captain on the pitch. Couldn't care less about "officially" or not.
McGregor's a better player IMO. You have a different opinion which is fair enough.
I'm not sure why you say hence why Hanlon gets picked ahead of him unless you think managers always get team selections correct? They don't. They quite often get things wrong.

Daz isnt a better player. You could never play Daz at LCB for example. His left foot is only for standing on. He has great qualities but Hanlon is a better all round footballer.

Yes, he is captain on the pitch when McGregor and Gray aren't playing. Who else is gonna be captain?
Hanlon has been chosen over Darren by all 4 managers who have had both. McGregor maybe a better pure defender but overall I think Paul is the better player. Honestly, I would be happy to see any combination of the 3 centre backs away from home but against lesser sides at home, Hanlon should play.

I also think last nights game suited Daz, I'm also a little worried about when we have the ball a lot more, we will see a different Daz.
As underscore said, maybe playing him in a 3 with Hanlon and Porteous either side of him would be the best system for us and to get him in regularly as long as his legs hold out?
Saying that, last night he was superb, it was the McGregor of old. :top marks

Surely for the time being we need to play a 3 of McGinn, McGregor and Hanlon. Give Ryan a wee rest and he can provide cover. He will be back in before too long.

You can see why Darren McGregor is such an important player for Hibs. Respected and admired by the whole team and maintaining the physical fitness despite injury lay offs and lack of game time to breeze through 90 minutes against strong opposition at the age of 35.
First name on the team sheet for Saturday.
