View Full Version : Porteous

I don't think he's improving. In fact I think he's regressed. He's the weak link in our defence.
Yeah. He’s regressed so much that our defensive record is much much better this season. And he’s made Scotland squads. And attracted £1m plus bids.
Going backwards at a rate of knots, right enough

He plays better when he has Darren in his ear, shame it’s on his wrong side
How? Has he got a bad ear?

Ryan Porteous has improved dramatically over the last 12 months, far better composure on the ball, he’s stopped the rash challenges, starts move moving into midfield. He’s making some occasional poor positional choices which will improve with experience, maturity and coaching. Let’s not let a couple of bad games cloud our judgement, the laddie has come on leaps and bounds hence the interest. No danger hibs were accepting a million for him.

Started the season ok but Stevie Wonder could see he's regressed since

Not read all the posts but just heard from a Customer Hibs have excepted a bid of 1.3 million from Millwall. Don’t shoot the messenger if not true.

Do you regress as a player in a few weeks/couple of months?
Surely that’s form rather than ability?

They knocked back a larger bid than that last week. Hibs don't really need to sell so if they want him it's top dollar!

Huge potential and would not like to see him go this early in his Hibs career but he and Hibs will do what is best for the finest young prospect we have produced in a long time. Money value where would you start.

If true, it's a real shame. In a better Hibs team, Porto would have been one to hang onto as long as possible. But in the current squad, he's not what we need right now.
Hibs need to get his replacement spot on, no excuses and no cheaping out on the fans or team.

Starting to see some real negativity towards one of our exciting young players these days.
He is still learning but your eyes would need to be painted on not to see his immense potential.
Yip. It seems to be the way on here.

I hope he stays, in my opinion he's still progressing well, and another year or so will see us maximise his worth.
He's 21 ffs, that's still a child in centre half terms.

Offer Livi £50k-£100k to take Ambrose on loan for the season. Weaken them and strengthen us.

You do realise that one of the things making is weaker is his constant errors?
I will bring up the game against Hamilton as an example. This place was saying the team was a shambles for almost losing a 3-0 lead and turning it into a defeat, but in reality it was all him, 3 howling mistakes and luckily a penalty that was saved.
The Aberdeen game he gives away a goal under no pressure at all and the game is then a lost cause.
Wednesday he plays Morelos onside multiple times due to not being in line with the other defenders playing the offside trap and then doesn't bother even tracking him for his run either.
That's just off the top of my head, he was howling against Hearts giving the ball away constantly.
Start of the season he was amazing and got a deserved call up, since then its been constant errors and bad passing.

That might be a bit of the problem though - he is young and still a few years away from his peak as a centre half. If we are getting offered decent money then we might see it as a chance to get a more experienced player or two in that could improve us overall in the short term.
I like both Porteous and Hanlon but I'd prefer us to be playing one of them alongside a more physical player.
Wouldn't exactly be in a rush to sell him but we might well be tempted.

The problem I see on selling him, is who can we get in now that would enhance us? We hardly ever seem to sell someone and replace him with better.
Even now folk hark back to Matty Jack, and we've never replaced McGinn, plus we are still left with Hanlon, I'd prefer us to keep Ryan than him, but nobody is offering us £1m plus for him.
As ii said before, he's still very very young for a centre half, I don't believe he's at his optimum worth yet for us to sell, but I suppose that's not up to me and I don't know what our finances are either?

Findlay, Gallagher, Guthrie? Think one of these types alongside one of ours would be a better mix. We might have some outside the league we’ve been looking at.
We might get more in future but suppose it depends what might be available now in whatever positions to reinvest.

I am trying to remember who we replaced Craig Paterson with when we sold him, or Steven Tweed for that matter did we replace with better or even equal players, may have to go back a fair bit for that to have happened wi any good defender we have sold, some other positions we managed but not many.
He will Captain Scotland one day and I would also like to see him captain Hibs but it is a business that they are in, so time will tell.

Centre Halfs which would make sense imo would be both Kerr and Findlay. Findlay out of contract end of season left sided. Kerr still young but pacey right sided.

I for one hope he stays as he's the youngest in an aging defence apart from Doig, and I don't see any of his potential replacements being as good as him.

The difference is that none of us play centre half for Hibs.
Not buying into Porto being such a wee sensitive soul that he is struggling with the negativity image some perceived he has with the media.
He’s become a regular in the side, but he’s also been shown at times to be lacking in basic defensive skills. Poor positioning as well as giving the ball away cheaply and dangerously, have become features of his game.
There is also plenty of potential there. He’s a strapping laddie who’s well equipped for the physical battle and he’s comfortable on the ball ( on his right foot).
He should be staying at Hibs, continue to develop and learn the game. If he does then he’ll get a better move than Millwall.
As it is, he’ll be found out in the Championship.

Really - how do you know that?
I'd be really interested to know how Hibs are being funded this season and their plans for next season.
With no match day income for probably two seasons, from what I can see, they do need to sell.

Very harsh assessment . He does not lack basic defensive skills and has been a vital part of a defence ( as has Doig) that has lost25 goals in 26 league games. Yes of course he makes mistakes but what centre half doesn’t. He is quite comfortably the best young centre half in Scotland and in terms of development is way ahead of his peers.Darren McGregor for instance was shifting between Arniston Rangers and Cowdenbeath in his early twenties, but he stuck at it and became a good centre half. I do agree that he may be best to stay with Hibs for a while and learn his trade but the stick he gets for making mistakes is way over the top. The number of goals he helps save far outweighs the ones he causes and replacing him won’t be easy.

Only age is keeping Porteous in ahead of Darren McGregor right now. Look at Darren's performance today. Porteous could learn a lot from it. I felt a million times more comfortable with Darren in today than Ryan. He has a hell of a long way to go for me. To me he spends too much time on the deck when he has the physicality not to. He has potential yes, but he'll only get away with that excuse for so long if he wants to be centre half for Hibs never mind someone else. Darren showed him up today.

Absolute rubbish, Darren made plenty minor errors today but never got punished for them. He has also been a really good player for us as has Ryan. A manager picks the best team available, nothing to do with age. If Darren was better than Ryan at the moment he would be playing every week. Thankfully people in the game know how good Ryan is, indeed when John MCGinn was leaving Hibs he was asked who Hibs best players were and had a chance of emulating his move down South. His prompt answer was Ryan Porteous. As I said before, Darren was playing for Arniston at 21.

John McNamee left for Newcastle and it was believed he moved because he felt he could not progress in Scotland because he had gained an unfair reputation.
No Hibs centre half was harder than John McNamee

I just can’t see the value in the club selling him for anything under £2 million right now, I think that a bid at that level is worth considering. No danger he’ll be worth less than that in the future, probably more if he cuts down on his positional errors.
