Unseen work

I was quite open and critical of him at the start of the season and wondered if he should be in the first team or if another loan spell would benefit him, I thought he had plenty energy but lacked composure and quality on the ball and was getting beat quite often defensively.

Im thrilled at how well and fast he seems to be improving. When you think how he’s defended of late and the quality of players like Frimpong, Tavernier etc they’ve barely had a touch or been noticed. He’s pressing play so well now and driving the team forward and putting them on the back foot.

On the ball his composure and quality has came on leaps and bounds with a couple of brilliant bits of play and crosses .

Hopefully he continues to progress at the rate he is doing, brilliant Josh.

Also, I don’t want to hear anymore or “he will replace Paul Hanlon at centre back” chat. The way he’s playing it would be madness to convert him from a flying fullback/wing back.

That driving run he done in the second half which to me looked like it should have been a pen was outstanding, we shouldn’t be putting the shackles on someone that can drive forward like that.

Yeah, I totally agree.

I didn’t want to criticise him at the start of the season because he’s only young and was just getting started but I just wasn’t convinced he had enough about him to be keeping Lewis out the team, and I didn’t think he looked all that special. He was ok, and playing in a defence that was defending well, but not much more than that.

But he’s come on leaps and bounds and I love the driving runs from deep. Some really decent balls into the box as well so there is a decent end product there too.

He’s getting better every week and I’m starting to get really high hopes for him.

I am the same. I thought he struggled in some games earlier in the season and I think Ross has managed him very well. He played really well today and was a huge part in teh first goal which was the most important moment in the game. I hope he overlaps more as Murphy cuts in far too often for me but having that wide option will give murphy more space or allow him to find the pass. Well done Josh and Jack Ross

Very exciting player.

Defenders will be terrified of him running at that pace towards them..

Hope the assist today gives him a bit of confidence. That’s what he needs to add to kick on a bit. Like that he always looks to play forward but that bit in the final third is what makes the difference.

I think a lot of his improvement might be down to working along side Lewis every day. Having someone with 500 appearances for the club helping and pushing you to become better everyday must be fantastic. Well done Josh.

Yes two players from the youth set up with a real chance of going further in the game. Both Ryan and Josh have that most important attribute “will to win”

Josh has got tons of ability, really excited for him Im sure he'll go onto big things. I really think this kid can play, he'll make mistakes at his age (and personally bringing Josh on is one of the reasons Lewis has a new contract.... not the only one btw before someone jumps down my throat), Very comfortable on the eye with the ball and no mean defender which is something he will improve on as all young players do in his positioning and decision making. Very exciting prospect as wing back and fullback. Ability wise, much more than Lewis, just needs to learn the game from a master like Lewis.

I know there is always talk of Hibs seeing him as a centre half long term. But the way he carries the ball, I just don’t see that at all. Looks like he has real potential at full back for me.

Loved his attitude against Celtic. He knew Frimpong roasted him earlier in the season, but rose to the challenge a second time. Most young players would have been terrified again, not Josh.

I was struggling to see the hype at the start but I’m really starting to think he’s the real deal. He’s got a great engine on him and he puts in a great cross. That run he had in the second half was fantastic and I thought he was unlucky not to get a penalty.

Good young prospect who'll hopefully get much better, still making a few mistakes like being out of position or trying too much and losing the ball but he'll learn from that and he's got Stevenson mentoring him. A few guys mentioned he's seen as Hanlon's replacement but at the moment I see him as Stevenson's replacement and the way Lewis was talking about him, so does he.

Outstanding run and the guy doesn't even play the ball just takes him out, didn't matter in the end at least.

Josh offers so much to the team in an attacking sense which is outstanding from left back

Mine also personally thought he knocked the ball between the defenders who blocked him off and would have been a foul anywhere else on the pitch but good to get the win.

Big thing for me is that he has to believe in himself.

I like the fact that he always looks forward first. Very rare that his first thought is to play the simple pass inside. He shows on occasion that he can carry the ball up the pitch, would just like to see him do it a bit more.

It looked 100% a penalty in normal time but the replays showed it was actually a decent decision from the ref not to give it.

In addition to his other skills Doig looks like a good learner. In the previous game this season at ER against Kilmarnock he didn’t look like he quite new how to handle Chris Burke. This time when Burke came on Doig handling of him was a big improvement and Burke didn’t get away with much.Looks like he could become the new golden boy (sorry Ryan but you are getting on a bit).

Easy to see why compared to Robertson by Queens Park fans , very similar in style and drive. ,.
Feel we have a diamond on our hands and heard that both sides of the old firm have noticed how well he has performed against both.
Not sure how long a contract he is on but needs extended .

J-C, it’s a great question, but we just need to see how he develops
His pace is frightening though!
I remember speaking to George Craig at a development game just after we got him form Hearts. He couldn’t believe we got him
At that stage I believe we thought we were signing a centre back, as he all the attributes to develop in that position

Remember also Paul Hanlon started his Hibs career at left back, before getting moved to Centre back

Seen him in ASDA last night (all masked up) and, having not seen him play in the flesh, I didn't realise how tall he is.

He had a great game yesterday and, with his pace and ability to drive forward with the ball, his future has to be at full back.

At the start of him playing in the 1st team a lot of people found it easy to critisize him, but I thought he was a good young player from day 1, and I'm glad he's starting to impress people more, he's a cracking young player who's had to grow up really quickly in footballing terms. I certainly wouldn't rule out Mackie either in that position though. Good to have 2 really good young left backs at the club, apart from other things it stops the team from looking lop-sided in terms of speed.

Seen Kenny Millar say a few times on Twitter say he thinks long term Doig will be be a centre back, not seen him play there but surprised, the amount of energy he has I thought long term he would be a left back, remember hanlon playing there when he first came through and although he is good on the ball I think most people could see he would end up playing more central

Lot of learning to do and growing as he's still a skinny kid, it won't do his development any wrong learning the LB position

I thought it was another good night for young Doig. He puts a great variation of balls into the box and if we were going to score I felt it would have been through one of his crosses. He reminds me a lot of Kieran Tierney in his style. Was disappointed when he came off and thought we lost a bit of attacking momentum as a result. I hope he stays at Hibs for a few seasons but the real bonus is we have unearthed a valuable asset in a short space of time.

It would surely take a ridiculous bid for Hibs to part company with him now as he looks like he’s going to develop into a very good player. He’s only 18 and is getting 1st team football. He won’t be going to Celtic as they won’t part with the money even though they got £11m for Frimpong. If he’s to leave Hibs for the EPL Id want, I know it’s unlikely, £2m + 50% sell on fee and loaned back to Hibs until the summer.

He's done well this season but really surprised it's been enough to attract EPL clubs. Realise its just paper talk and it might just be he's a name on a list somewhere but he needs to stay here imo and keep playing football at a decent level.

Huge amount of promise but still lots for him to work on.

We have a duty of care to our players

He is very very young and apparently still growing

Football is littered with guys who made the breakthrough really young, looked good and then burned out and failed to either kick on or even sustain that level and are now playing at a lower level or out the game.

I could probably name half a dozen from across the city in the last 10 years who fall into that category and you could debate whether that happened to us to some extent or other with Harris, Booth, Stanton & Wotherspoon

It's chicken feed for them, and when you look at, say, Billy Gilmour, who is on his way to being that level of player, or even Robertson and McGinn, if a City or an Arsenal think there's a chance Doig could make it, why not chuck a couple million at us? It's worth it over letting a smaller side do it then one day they have to shell out tens of millions for him.

They seemed to have an extra man down his side first half so he was given a real test but he coped well. However, despite being a fan, I have to point out that he was rooted to the spot ball watching in the lead up to their goal. Had Doig covered Jack's run, Porto would not have been distracted from following Plug. Halberg gives Doig daggers after Plug scores, although he too could have worked harder to block Jack's run.

You make a good point, Porteous has received far too much stick for that goal. You can see him looking to see if anybody was making a run from the right hand side. In that situation you should go with the player in the most dangerous position so that was Morelos. One of the problems of playing a back 3, much more difficult to coach than a back 4. Fans also conveniently forget the number of tackles and interceptions Porteous makes which saves us losing goals. He is a terrific young player who we will miss greatly when he moves on.
