Some light reading on the history of goalie gloves, with some Budgie Burridge (claimed introduction of) & Alan Rough (non conformist to ) modern gloves.

Scottish keeper Archie Pinnell 120+ years ago!

Anybody old enough here to have seen goalies play without gloves at Easter road?

Jim Herriot. Sure he rubbed mud on his hands.

Tommy Younger was the first goalkeeper I remember seeing. I don’t think he routinely wore gloves except in cold or damp conditions. They certainly weren’t custom made gloves they wear today. In fact, if I remember correctly they were yellow, possibly woollen ( don’t quote me) gloves. I remember him carrying them on to the pitch along with a cap for looking in to the sun.

He used to rub mud on his face under his eyes. I think it had something to do with glare of the floodlights.

I've got between 50 and 60 pairs of goalkeeper gloves. Some worn but many not. I've become less interested in recent years as prices top £130 for a high end pair, it's an expensive hobby.

The evolution even from the 90s to now is huge. Thinking back to the early 90s the choices were really Sondico, Resusch or Uhlsport. The Adidas Fingersave are mentioned as revolutionary in the article linked but they were stiff and inflexible. Such a glove is pretty rare to see among pro or amateur goalkeepers these days. I would argue Selsport were the real game changers. The Wrappa was a glove like nothing seen before. It brought the roll finger cut to the mass market and the ribbed latex backhand was a thing of beauty. In terms of influence I would argue only the Uhlsport 036 came close. In the late 90s and early 00s off the top of my head I can remember Nigel Martyn, Shaka Hislop, Dean Keily, Maik Taylor and Paul Robinson all wearing them, there were many, many more. For a Hibs connection Antti Niemi sported a pair in the 6-2 game. For years that style was dominant with brands like Sells, Puma and Nike all releasing roll finger gloves with chunky latex backhands and paying goalkeepers a fortune to wear their version rather than Selsport.

The recent trend seems to have moved towards a sleeker glove and the negative or hybrid cut has become more prominent than the roll finger although there are still a few who prefer the latter (Rocky clearly being one).

For the uninitiated, what are roll finger gloves?

Velcro was all the rage in ma day :greengrin

Back in the day goalie gloves (like shin pads) were for "puffs" ...... how my hands used to sting without them :greengrin my first pair were my mums discarded "driving" gloves. my next pair were wool and had no grip what so ever. Very interesting piece there from Pretty boy for an anorak like me, the evolution of goalie gloves.

Always remember Sepp Maier wearing what seemed to be a gigantic pair in the early 70s. We laughed at school he borrowed Mickey Mouses gloves, great keeper.

Basically the palm is stitched directly to the backhand rather than them being joined together using gussets as with the regular cut. Because of that the latex rolls across the palm and round the fingers and side of the hands.

Roll finger:

Regular cut:

The article below explains it better than I can%

My mind can only think of some sort of a song by Max Bygraves...

Correct sorry if this is a bit of a woosh moment. He wasn’t really my era.

Only ever had one pair of goalie gloves. Think
They were a guinea IIRC from Ronnie Simpson’s shop on Rose Street. Basic is an understatement, more or less cotton gloves with thing textured rubber glued on the palms and fingers. maybe 1968 or there about.

Mid 70s again I did have a pair for Christmas that were basically mesh with ping pong bat pimple material attached to the fingers. Better than the woollen affaires I used previously.

Yep, mine were a yellow waffle type material with black pimpled rubber.
