Sad news.
I can remember "You`ll never walk alone" being sung at Easter Road in the 80`s. Liverpool and Celtic both adopted the song as long standing terrace anthems, but I wonder how many other club`s fans used to sing it as well?

Much as Celtic supporters like to claim it’s their anthem, it was the Liverpool supporters that first sung it along with lots of the other Mersey sounds of the early 60’s. Most clubs adopted it as well and it was sung regularly at Easter Road. I don’t really think it was looked on as a Celtic anthem till much later.

Ironically Gerry Marsden was an Everton Supporter in his early days!

Gerry and the Pacemakers recorded it in 1963 .It was their third record, their first two had gone to No.1,and this did also despite the fact that it was a well known song from a musical that had been around for 20 years. The top 10 records were always played at Anfield and the No.1 was always playing as the teams came out.As it was a bit of a belter their fans liked it and sang along and adopted it as their anthem eventually.

Ferry cross the Mersey is my song to my Grandad.
You’ll never walk alone was played at his funeral and for that reason I avoid it at all times. Ironically he’s passed on the day of my Granny’s anniversary
He was like a lesser Beatle back in the day it’s said. Rest in peace.

RIP Gerry, a nice friendly guy who chatted to my Mum when we bumped into him in the Albert Dock years ago. YNWA was played at both my parents funerals.

Remember seeing the film ‘Ferry across the Mersey’ in the local fleapit and singing ‘ You’ll Never Walk Alone’ in the Cave behind the goals to celebrate yet another victory
I remember I got a HIBS college style scarf cos I thought it looked better in a ‘ Walk On “
Celtic are a classless club and always try and steal anything that is half decent as we know only too well
Anyway Gerry Marsden always came across as a decent likeable genuinely friendly guy
Deepest sincerest condolences to family and friends
RIP

Sad news.
I seen them play on the pitch at the 1984 Charity Shield Cup Final. Liverpool v Everton, 100000 at the game and that singalong with Gerry and the Pacemakers before the game will live with me forever.

We did a cool version with a clappy, double speed chorus in the middle;
”cause-you’ll-ne-ver-walk-a-lone”

The song was sung, and still is, by every club's supporters. It's just a great opportunity to show the colours. I even heard ice hockey fans singing "Skate on" at a Racers night back in the eighties!
Of course the media like to create a myth about it belonging to Celtic and Liverpool alone. It makes for a better story.

Not my type of song, bit dirgy for my tastes but no denying it’s power and influence in the game. RIP Gerry.

Yeah, but nobody managed to keep in time and it always fizzled out.
I always felt we needed a Conductor on the old East Terrace (preferably not the buses one... though any port in a storm)
