Outplayed, out thought and well beaten by a team that had players willing to run themselves into the ground whilst our bunch looked dead on their feet. I’ve heard all the stuff about games played over a short time period taking their toll, but every team in the League has that same problem. We just don’t look anywhere near fit enough and that, as much as anything else today, cost us three vital points. Livi reminded me of Hibs under John Collins. Hunt in packs and close the opponent down whilst regaining possession. I thought we were really poor against Ross County and I think we were even poorer today.

Unsurprisingly, Jack Ross rang the changes in the starting eleven bringing back Marciano, Stevenson, Mallan and Gogic although Rocky injured himself in the warm up which brought Barnes into the line up with Craig Samson the sub goalie on the bench. There was too a welcome return to the bench for fit again Jamie Murphy.

Pretty much from the off, Livingston set about pressuring our play, causing numerous stray passes and aimless punts up the park. As early as the fifth minute, Jason Holt flashed in an effort that went just outside the far post. Next, Scott Robinson was booked for an outrageous dive in the Hibs penalty area. Robinson featured again two minutes later when he hooked a ball over his shoulder into a huge area of free space behind the Hibs back four. Stevenson was caught on his heels and though he tried to reach Josh Mullin going into the area he couldn’t get there and the Livi man struck a fine drive across the diving keeper and in to the far corner of the net. This would not be the only time that our back four was horribly exposed due to their poor positioning.

Hibs were offering next to nothing in an attacking sense and seven minutes after taking the lead, Livi doubled their total. A corner from their left dropped inside the six yard area and Barnes fell as he tried to clear the danger. The ball then bounced off both Porteous and Gogic before Jon Guthrie blasted it home from close range.

Happy with their lot, Livi just let Hibs have the ball for a while, confident the home side would do nothing to endanger their two goal cushion. We did have a short spell of enjoying more possession but did nothing with it. The midfield was once again missing in action. Gogic was like a headless chicken whilst Newell hardly seemed to touch the ball. Mallan was guilty also of giving away cheap possession and Boyle was quickly doubled up on whenever the ball reached him.

Up front, Nisbet made some decent runs in to space but was never picked out whilst Doidge was like a man short, so poor was his contribution. Meanwhile, our back four and our central two in particular were having a collective nightmare as Livi ran at them without any pressure being applied to the man on the ball.

Livi finished the half as they had started it, on the front foot with Mullin and Robinson causing all sorts of problems. A good save from Barnes stopped Mullin doubling his tally whilst at the other end, a terrible effort from range by Newell flew miles wide of the target. Surely Jack Ross would make changes at the break, both to personnel and shape, but no the same eleven came out and the same shape remained. Unsurprisingly, only two minutes into the half, Livi pretty much killed the tie with a third goal and what a shocker it was to concede. A high punt out of defence by Jon Guthrie was allowed to bounce by Porteous and Scott Robinson got in ahead of him to collect the ball. Hanlon then committed himself and Porteous was left flat footed as Robinson tucked the ball beyond the advancing Barnes. It was Sunday League defending.

After a shell shocked Hibs watched a Stevie Mallan shot fly high and wide, Jack Ross made a substitution, replacing Gogic with Jamie Murphy, presumably to try and inject some positivity but it was a tall order when already 3-0 down and not having registered a single effort on target. Guthrie and Ambrose had a nice easy afternoon as Doidge offered nothing and Nisbet looked worn out. Little had changed in the flow of play and you got the feeling Livi could go on and double their tally if they wanted to. Offensively we were offering nothing and after sixty seven minutes, Doig and Gullan replaced Stevenson and Doidge.

On seventy two minutes, I reckon Hibs got their one and only effort on target when a weak Gullan header was easily caught by Stryjek in the Livi goal. Soon after, Hibs were ripped open again down the Livi left and substitute Serrano could have picked out an unmarked team mate but blazed an effort over the bar instead.

With the game drawing towards a close, substitute Jamie Gullan was himself substituted after suffering two quite hefty challenges that had gone unpunished. Drey Wright took his place although just what was expected of him was unclear.

Two minutes into time added on, a fine cross from the left saw Porteous charge in to get a free header but with the goal open his effort went yards wide.

I’m utterly convinced that had there been a crowd in attendance the players would have left the pitch to a chorus of booing. Personally, I never boo but I’d have been helluva tempted to join in. This was a quite shocking performance and there can be no valid excuses for it. Our formation was poor and our stamina pretty much non existent whilst the Livi players gave their all right up to the final whistle.

For the second game in a row there will be no man of the match award from me. I wouldn’t embarrass myself as not one of them came anywhere near deserving it.

The players

Barnes – Called in as a late replacement I felt he could have done better at the second goal, but I sympathise with him in having that back four in front of him for ninety minutes.

McGinn – Normally Mr Dependable, Paul was well off it today, both in a defensive and attacking capacity. One attempted cross from a good position on the right, landed in the back row of the FF Lower.

Porteous – I know Ryan is the Golden Boy to some on here, but I thought today’s performance was pathetic. If you look at County’s first goal from last week, Porteous came charging out and missed his challenge, leaving a huge hole in the centre of defence which was punished. Today he committed the cardinal sin for any defender and let the ball bounce – another goal conceded. Also, I wish he’d stop throwing himself on the ground every time he’s in the opponents’ box for a set piece – it’s embarrassing.

Hanlon – Found badly wanting for the second goal last week and again for the third goal this week. I normally rate Paul quite highly, but I can guess that those who don’t will be extremely critical of his poor performance today and they have every right to voice those concerns.

Stevenson – Why was Lewis brought in at the expense of Doig, I wonder? He was sleeping at the first goal and made far too many poor passes today. Lewis always gives his all, winning or losing, but there was no real evidence of that today.

Boyle – Totally anonymous throughout. In his slight defence, he didn’t get much service but when he did, he offered no threat to the Livi back line.

Gogic – I think I said earlier he was like a headless chicken but that’s unfair really – to headless chickens. Gets repeatedly caught in possession whilst the man he was brought in to replace simply strolled around that midfield mopping things up with little or no fuss.

Mallan – I actually felt a wee bit sorry for him today. Brought in to help enhance our creativity he found himself alongside team mates who’d forgotten the meaning of the word.

Newell – There were huge parts of the game today that Joe was nowhere to be seen. I wondered if the recall to Mallan had meant Joe was given a different job to do. If that was the case, he didn’t produce it.

Nisbet – The laddie looks knackered, but he still made some decent runs but none of his team mates had the craft or guile to notice them.

Doidge – Like a man short I’m afraid. I’ve praised him in the past for his sterling work both in attack and defence but today Guthrie wasn’t troubled, and Ambrose was smoking his usual cigar.

Murphy – Jamie tried his best to get Hibs going but it was a losing battle because any time he had a bit of space there was no-one to pick out up front.

Gullan – Jamie works hard enough but didn’t really leave any sort of positive impression. I thought the two tackles he suffered near the end were both fouls, but the ref thought otherwise.

Doig – I felt there was a few occasions that Doig and Murphy got in each other’s space but over the piece, Josh did relatively ok in the circumstances.

Wright – Not on long enough to merit any sort of mention.

Jack Ross – I know his players are tired but that doesn’t excuse his setting up of the team or the tactics he has used in our last two home defeats.

Referee – David Munro had a pretty easy afternoon of it, I thought.

Excellent summary as usual.

No leaders on the field as many have already pointed out.

The one bright spot for me was the link up down the left between Doig and Gullan which resulted in Jamie playing a fantastic ball across the face of goal. It deserved to be finished off but no one was sharp enough.

They are just not putting in the effort which makes them look tired. Strolled about the last 2 games and duly pumped both times.

You let Ross off lightly.

And Mallan who was yet again part of a failed midfield. But its okay cause he turns up and scores against fishermen and electricians.

Aye you’re right

So many teams we play especially the smaller teams all seem to have so much energy in midfield. Constantly pressing hurrying always in your face.

We never seem to have that

Why are our players tired but no other clubs players seem to be?It's all that running about and passing sideways to each other before launching it whilst the likes of Ross county and Livingston just relax, sit in, 3 passes later they score.

The lot of them should be made to go into training tomorrow morning. Boot up the arse needed.

Ross said in the post match interview that according to the stats, hibs have used the least players so far this season. That to me means Ross has caused this by not rotating enough, or, the other players we do have are not good enough.

I feel he needs someone in beside him that would coach him through games a bit, give him an earful when required, not sure Hanlon is that type of guy.

Must have been a challenge to do the last 2 write ups JB, so well done for sticking with it.

Thinking back on Hibs last 2 performances, something has clearly gone badly wrong over the last week, whether that's in preparation for games, training, tactics or something else.

For every player to go completely off form at the same time is inexplicable but for those same players to show so litlle effort or fight in adversity is completely unacceptable.

Jack Ross has rightly received praise for our points tally particularly away from home this season, but the pictures of him today standing emotionless on the touchline with his hands in his pockets won't inspire anyone, let alone the players.

You have to match the desire of the opposition before you can have any influence on the match, I hope that our team and our supporters have learned that the disparity been Hibs and the rest is not that great and so we face a difficult semi final, potential final and league run in to cement 4th place.

Signing 3 non match fit players goes a long way to explaining these stats surely. Is he looking for sympathy when he was responsible for okaying the signings most of which still aren’t match fit half way through the season?
He is also responsible for the shape of the team and the tactics employed. A week ago today the team put in a terrific performance at Ibrox playing a shape that suited the selected players very well. Why can’t we stick with a style that suits us? I don’t get this “we have to play a different style at home to that which we play away from home” thing - particularly when there are no crowds present!
I agree none of the players have played anywhere near to form in the last two games but has that got anything to do with the constant changes in the roles each individual is being asked to play?

Yep, just what I said on another thread. The last 2 games mess is Ross's fault as far as I can see but some players really need to do more.

Where to even start !!!

Barnes .... 5 .... Looked all over the place at times, but can't shoulder all of the blame for the shambolic defending in front of him.

McGinn ... 4 .... As shaky at the back as I've seen him and his crossing the few times he got the chance was terrible. He played a poor ball straight into the keepers arms from a great position, but he has to be asking why not a single one of 4 Hibs players in the box made the near post run that could have made it a great ball.

Hanlon ... 4 .... Without doubt his worst game of the season and like Porteous should be embarrassed by Livvi's 3rd goal ... car crash defending at its very best.

Porteous .... 4 ... Also his worst game of the season, compounded by putting a great chance miles past the post, he should be even more embarrassed than Hanlon for the 3rd.

Stevenson ... 4 ... Nowhere near as solidly capable the defender he usually is, that aside it was like the Lewis we have come to expect over the years, get to the half way line then pass the ball back to Hanlon, guilty of two shocking passes in the 2nd half that gifted two breakaways to Livvi.

Gogic .... 3 ... Contributed absolutely nothing.

Newell .... 4 .... At times he was even playing behind Hanlon, 50 bloody yards from where he needed to be in this game, especially after we went 0 - 2 down.

Mallan .... 4 .... When his career is over he can tell his grand kids about the day he played in the only game in history where a team had two players doing exactly the same thing in exactly the same area of the park to absolutely no affect whatsoever, along with Newell.

Boyle .... 4 .... If FIFA gave awards for being able to hit the first defender with a cross, or being unable to outrun defenders but still have folk believe that's your game, he would have been on video link with Zurich a week or so ago.

Doidge .... 3 ... Woeful, some of his attempts to control the ball turned into our longest passes of the afternoon.

Nesbit .... 4 ... Little or no impact, though I thought he was unlucky not to get a penalty. How a striker is supposed to score goals with absolutely no service of any quality whatsoever is something he should be asking Jack Ross.

SUBS:

Murphy ... 5 .... At least tried to make something happen, with little success.

Doig .... 7 .... Had the guts to try and get forward and run at the opposition with the ball, his effort shamed some of our so called 'experienced' players MOTM by a mile, just behind the 11 Livvi players.

Gullan ... 5 ..... His one contribution of a great ball across their box that was begging to be tucked away gives him more points than most of his colleagues.

Wright ... N/A ... I watched the whole game and somehow missed the fact he had even come on, I certainly didn't notice that he had ever come on after he did.

Jack Ross ..... Why the hell he thought this was a game for Stevenson and not Doig, especially with Murphy only on the bench, is baffling. That's not even hindsight I thought that when I saw the lineup, we had zero threat on the left as a result. We stunk after half time against Ross County, so what he said at half time on Wed didn't do any good. We stunk for the whole game today. Clearly Braveheart style motivational speeches aren't his thing.

The Livvi manager. Must have watched the Ross County game and thought .... 'aye let's do that' ..... I don't think I've ever seen a non Old Firm manager look so relaxed during a game at Easter Road after they went 0 - 2 up, you got the feeling he would have bet every penny he had plus his house and the wife and kids against a Hibs comeback.

NOTE ..... Tiredness is not an excuse that professional players should be using in a situation where every team is in the same boat, even if Livvi did get a day off during the week coz of their frozen pitch.

Reading that was every bit as depressing as watching the game.

Only thing I'd add was that we were denied a clear penalty when Nisbet was pushed over. That said, we didn't deserve a goal and, as the old joke has it, were lucky to get nil.

Thought there was more creativity from Gullan in the few minutes he was on the pitch than in total from the rest of the team.
In Murphy and Magennis we have signed two players who won’t play a full season between the two of them. That to me is unforgivable.

Having watched Hibs being bossed at ER by Ross County and even more so by Livingston these are worrying times. Unless Ross can bring in some quality in the window we can forget the League Cup and will struggle to hang on to a top six place. We are just too soft in every facet of the game.

Livvy just looked quicker, sharper and fitter all over the park. When they had the ball the broke quickly flat out trying to score, when we got ball the players looked like the wanted to go back to bed because they were ****ged out. Amateur performance at best.

Yep, mentally and physically we are so weak. When we are allowed to dominate a game and it is played to suit us, we can be formidable and get good results.

Nullify our attacking threat though, and we are powder puff. Ross County and Livi sussed us out big time tactically and other teams will do the same. McInnes of Aberdeen has already worked us out.

Big transfer window coming up for Hibs. We desperately need to freshen up the team. If we do, we could win a Cup and get 3rd in the league. If not we will continue to deteriorate.

You could see the first goal coming. Our back 4 just seemed so brittle, one half decent pass and we were turned and in trouble.

Second goal... ok, maybe can make allowances for an unlucky break of the ball.

Third goal... jeez. At least it explained why we always looked out numbered in midfield and attack, because one livi player could completely dominate two of ours.

An awful, awful day at the office. No more please Hibs!

We lost 2 goals to balls over the top of our slower than a snail back 4, turning slower than milk. Livvy done their homework.
