How can a tunnel, suspended 50m below the surface be called a bridge?
And when they call it a tube I have this image of the refuse tubes clipped together on scaffolding at building renovations.

You mightn't think a bridge could be made out of chocolate, either. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMbJyJvqt48)
You might be taking everything a bit too literally today!

I'll take the ferry thanks.

I guess if a bridge is just thought of as something which connects two things then it doesn't matter if it doesn't fit the structural concept of what we think of when thinking "bridge".
I've no idea what the demand is like for ferries/flights that this would help solve but I'm not sure I'd fancy driving 40 minutes in an underwater tunnel!

Hopefully it's as cool as the underwater tunnels in the Faroes:

A new bridge to connect an independent Scotland and a United Ireland is a very generous leaving gift from the UK. Beats flowers anyway.

Ignoring all the inevitable fleg stuff, I like that we’re working on possible ways to connect places up, even if they sound a bit bonkers.

Pretty sure one of the Norwegian ones is 27m long. I would think the Irish Sea is a bit rougher than the fjords though.

One of the things I don't understand is how can a tunnel, presumably concrete, 'float' 50m below the surface? Anchored to the seabed and suspended from pontoons. Why not just join the pontoons to make a floating bridge/causeway.
If it is suspended midsea it will have to be flexible to allow for currents and tides.

They’d still be blocked by orange marching bands in July like the ferries out of Stranraer!

There has to be room for shipping to sail over it.

I know it’s unlikely to ever happen but as a concept I love it. I’m not so’s sure it’s needed though , the priority should be spending money providing better ferry / road services to our more remote communities.

I love it as well. When you see the projects that are going on in Norway and the Faroes it shows how unimaginative we are in connecting Scotland.

I'd suggest it's less about imagination and more about finance. As societies, we have decided we have different priorities. Denmark and Norway don't have nuclear weapons, for one thing.

These types of bridges/tunnels are or will be commonplace in Norway as they continue to build their Atlantic Coast Highway, one of Europes most spectacular engineering projects.
Just shows you what small countries can achieve. The infrastructure outside of the M25 in the UK really is appalling, certainly no 'Great' in Great Britain any more.

Plus Norway has an incredibly large fund built from the proceeds of it's oil fields... which it didn't have to share with a much larger neighbour.

I can remember seeing the construction sites for the Faroes project when we were over for the football. Even their land tunnels, that went straight through the middle of mountains, were quite impressive.

There is currently a consultation on giving Argyll a much better trunk road connection because the A82 over the Rest and Be Thankful (between Loch Lomond and Inverary) keeps getting blocked by landslides. Some of the proposals are full on infra-crazy. Tunnels under the Firth of Clyde etc.
I guess if you don't have to stump up for your share of connecting London with Crossrail you can do more of this sort of thing.

So, what plans have the UK Gov put forward so far for this bridge?
Have they decided yet if the Border Controls that will/won't be put in place should be located in Northern Ireland, Scotland or slap bang in the middle?

As I was goint to Argyll at the beginning of November I was interested in this, 11 possible options were drawn up, the preferred option is a bridge over Loch Long at Garelochhead, but I agree, some fairly strange proposals. Having said thatm Transport Scotland, and other large organisations always have their preferred option and throw crazy ideas to ensure that's what is chosen (I know from working on the current A9 works)

FWIW I don't see anything wrong with the Rest and Be Thankfull that a roof over the road wouldn't solve.

If it was the South of England that was being connected to anywhere, it would be built by now.
I’m all for it. Zero chance Johnson can deliver it though. It would need political will all round and that is just not there.

If the price was going to be right this wasn’t a bad idea. Anything that reduces air miles is a good thing and in the hopefully near future when many trucks are electric this would be a great was to transport goods all around the British isles in an eco friendly way. At the end of the day the cost was to high but I don’t think it is a bad thing to have looked into the idea.
