It is easy to use and the goods don't cost anymore so well worth signing up for and you know that a small proportion, very small, goes to helping someone.

A smokescreen to make them look like a kind, caring company. When they start paying their fair share of taxes I’ll believe them.

All for supporting charities and love it when companies do properly support them but they also must pay their way too.

Great if people absolutely must use Amazon but using decent sources to buy from and keeping a change jar to put to HCF and the like at the end of the month - if affordable - is far more ethical.

Companies avoiding paying taxes but making nominal donations to charity is like applauding someone who’s robbed your home and put what he didn’t need into the local charity shop.

I agree with that. It's a good way to redirect some money if you need to use Amazon, but if you choose to use Amazon over other sources because of it then you may be doing more harm than good.

I'm guilty of using Amazon more than I'd like because it's so convenient, but I'm consciously trying to avoid it where I can.

One other thing to be aware of – it will bug you to install an app or browser extension, nominally to make sure you always use the Amazon Smile page rather than regular Amazon, but the main purpose is to let them track and datamine you more. You don't need the app/extension to buy stuff via Amazon Smile.

My last few purchases from the Amazon app have all resulted in Amazon Smile money going to the Community Foundation, I didn't have to change anything that I was doing (AFAIK!)

Yeah they only spend millions on tax lawyers and accountants so that they can be sure they understand the rules, the poor little lambs.

The people letting them get away with it is us, because we elect politicians with their snouts in the trough.

Yeah, big bad Amazon. There are many big companies that do pay their taxes and choose to operate in an ethical fashion even though if they spent enough money on accountants they could get away with it.

Just because you can doesn’t make it moral to do so.

An SME claiming some extra expenses as tax free is completely different from the billions avoided worldwide by amazon each year.

The first sentence is completely irrelevant. Re the rule, the UK tax system is bigger than the king james bible.

I disagree with the first part of the second sentence, no individual voter is letting huge companies trade on our shores and not pay fair taxes.

You are of course correct in that a large amount of politicians who are elected have their snouts in one trough or another.

Its a message board trope, whereby the companies are protrayed as the bad guy. Its not their fault, its that countries government.

Amazon is great. The service is generally fantastic. Cant wait for the next big change in customer service. They definately upped the anti

As I say, the pittance of their profits they give to charity is a drop in the ocean to what they gain from avoided taxes. Why should you have to pay tax when if you’re rich enough you can avoid it?

I’m not well off by any means but I buy as little from companies but still donate to my chosen charities. Doing one doesn’t exclude you from the others.

It comes down to weighing up the cost of “cheap” and “convenient”, but I won’t pretend that donating a small amount of money to charity makes Amazon a good company. They’re anything but.

When we have record numbers of people going to foodbank because our welfare system is offering a pittance, small businesses can’t compete with online companies that can be cheaper because they don’t pay tax then we rely on everyone paying their fair share.

Money going to charities is great, but when they’re helping tackle issues caused by underfunding and the like then you can’t look at just one side of what causes the issue.

Looking forward to your tedious, robotic tabloid sound bite you choose to reply with.

Am sure you can grasp that nobody is condoning companies not paying their fair share of taxes! deary me.

Its a thread where a fellow Hibby has advised others that there is a chance for Hibernian to get some cash via their transactions! Waxing lyrical about ethics, is probs for another board on hibs net.

If you don’t want to be called out on moronic tabloid sound bites then don’t use moronic tabloid sound bites like “right on” as a response to something.

As I said before - the scheme is great if you have to use Amazon. However you can’t pretend it makes them a good company or ignore that a lot of people and schemes that the charities help wouldn’t be required if tax avoidance wasn’t so commonplace and public funding is what it could be.

Your reply to me was quoting one post when you knew fine I had posted more than that.

"As i said before"... yip, mentioned a couple of times. Rinse and repeat. Nobody is argueing with you on the priciple of large companies not paying fair taxes.!!

I'm still glad that a fellow Hibby has given others a chance for Hibernian to gain from their purchase. They were going top purchase them anyway. A win for Hibernian if you like.

I will leave you to it, but happy for you to continue via private email if thats what you wish. Have a good day Northern Hibee

:top marks

There are many companies like Amazon which use an arcane and porous tax code to benefit their shareholders whilst shafting their workers with zero hour contracts and no benefits. It is the fault of the governments who allow taxes to be basically become a voluntary donation for the super rich, and the UK is notorious for it, whilst the need for austerity is constantly pushed by the their enablers. What we need is a new tax, simpler tax code which removes as many loopholes as possible; one which refuses to partake in the race to the bottom of ever lower corporate taxes and free lunches for the giants whilst the rest starve.

You are exactly right, it's a smokescreen. Paying your fair share of taxes doesn't come with kudos for most of us. You just pay what is due and it benefits us all. Of course, that would cost companies like Amazon far more, but that is how it should be.

It is easy to use and the goods don't cost anymore so well worth signing up for and you know that a small proportion, very small, goes to helping someone.

Bet you wish you hadn't bothered posting this now!

Who's guilty for the downfall of our high streets, companies such as Amazon or us, the consumers?

Unquestionably both - but also the lawmakers who fail to keep up with changing tech and provide a level playing field so that high street shops can compete.

:agree:

At an individual level, we all make selfish decisions based on price, convenience, quality etc. This is both rational and understandable. But governments need to regulate markets to ensure a level playing field.

Personally, I believe that seeing as Amazon is now an essential service and an effective monopoly, it should be taken into public ownership, with each country having a stake proportionate to the % of turnover in their country.

Discount the unpaid taxes from the purchase price and it won’t be too expensive either.

It's a bit like a pat on the head saying "well done peasant for helping us massacre your high street while paying virtually no taxes - here is a small gesture by us to soothe your conscience - now F*** Off"
Actually no it's not.

That wouldn’t change however much tax revenue increased, it’s an ideological standpoint to minimise welfare payments not financial.

Other than food shopping, pretty much everything I’ve bought since March has been from Amazon.

Will sign up for this, thanks for posting.
