The player ratings these days are quite guff. An arbitrary number that unless the player stands out as the best or the worst in the match will tend to get the most inoffensive rating given to not annoy anyone.

I sometimes question the bits of content from the Scotsman/Evening News but when Craig Fowler etc did ratings for the Edinburgh clubs there was at least a blurb about why they got it and you could generally get a feel for the performance from the description.
