Just read on BBC website that Peter Aliss, The Voice of Golf, has passed away at 89
He had some great sayings. Remember the dual in the Sun in 1977 at Turnberry, Tom Watson played a fantastic shot at the 18th and he said
“Elementary my dear Watson”
It stuck with me forever

Fabulous commentator. Old school, knew his subject inside out, had a personable style and didn't spout sensationalist nonsense to try to make himself seem more interesting or knowledgeable. He didn't need to do that because he was so good

Good golfer, great commentator. As well as the majors loved his other formats...A Round with Aliss which was a cross between a game of golf and a chat show, and the pro celebrity golf that was filmed in the summer and shown over Christmas.

I'm not a golf fan at all, but Peter Aliss was surely one of the best commentators in any sport. His voice was perfect for it - always calm and quiet, it fitted perfectly with the game itself, much like Ted Lowe in snooker. He came across as a really nice guy, too. He'll be greatly missed by golf fans. RIP.

The passing of another legendary commentator. He really was the voice of golf and for so many years.

Fantastic commentator. Gentle in the way he spoke, thorough in the way he communicated play.

Aliss and Hay together doing the golf was an absolute treat to listen to. Two men who loved the game, understood it and had a wonderful rapport. Both will be sadly missed.

Agree with this...their repartee was unparalleled. Many an enjoyable hour spent listening to them bestow their wisdom and brilliantly subtle sense of humour.

Saw a clip of him commentating the other day.
Comedy timing was immaculate.
Ken Brown- he’s so many numbers on his card he will need Carol Vorderman to add it up.
Alliss- ah Carol Vorderman. I like her. I saw her on countdown the other day. I got aroused.........(much tittering in the background)..... 7 letters not bad for a boy who left school at 15 with no GCSE’s......studio collapses in hysterics.

Really enjoyed the Aroubd with Alliss shows wish they would put them on iplayer. A brilliant warm commentator who obviously loved the game had a great sense of humour and also understood people. Legend. RIP
