vast majority of that half was spent watching Dundee with the ball
While the BBC has Hibs with 55% possession, bizarre!

Well why threaten me with a ban then? Was he posting as a fan or an admin?
I'll leave it there as I don't want to waste the admins time with this crap and I actually agree with 99% of Pretty Boy's posts.
I'd imagine you realise that if you hadn't made an irrelevant, sly comment about PB being an admin, then there would have been no reaction whatsoever. That's my point. I agree, it should be left there.

Linesman gives a Hibs foul when he’s three yards away, Willy Collum gives it against us from thirty yards away.
Disgraceful.
Just because you are currently obsessed with the 442 not being a good formation does not make it a bizarre tactic.
I'm not obsessed, Ross chooses the tactic and I feel like a lot of people on here that we don't have the players to play it well, apart from a counter attacking goal, it hasn't worked again today.

Agreed, he's has already got closer to Dundee and made more challenges than Mallan. I think he's a better option than Mallan when playing 2 in the middle. And I rate Mallan but not in that formation.

Improving our pressing game has helped us this half. Strikers playing a significant part in that.

28-11-2020, 03:15 PM
Nisbet must have a good few assists to his name already this season? Really good signing and should only get better, needs to impose himself a bit more today though I can see him scoring.
I hate to say it, but tactically speaking Jack Ross now has a few alarms bells ringing for me. You could argue that he has played a large part in at least 4 of our last 5 or so poor results:
Hearts semi - couldn't respond to their subs at 60 odd mins
Celtic game - arguably his subs and sitting in lost us that win
St Johnstone - takes Gogic off and we lose control
Dundee today - decides to play a 2 in midfield with Mallan
And before anyone says anything, I'm not saying he was at fault as it's not as clear cut as that, but the fact you could argue each of those is a little worrying
When negative things happen it is natural to focus on the things that caused it. We don’t do the same things for the good results. What were the tactical changes that got us a 3-0 win over Aberdeen, or a 2-0 win at tynecastle, or a 2-2 draw against rangers?
There’s been more good results than bad since he took over so I don’t think you are being entirely fair.
Ps, I think the win at tynecastle was down to his decision to push Boyle up front to run off a slow defence. But we all know that... :)

Amazing what happens when they get a rollocking at half time and some decide to start playing, better tempo and energy. Doidge did nothing the 1st half but has chased and harried since half time, 442 can work but needs the 10 outfield players to work hard to do so.

Yep, Doidge elbowed in the throat - and I'd like to see it again to see if the Dundee player knew what he was doig - Collum gives a free kick to Dundee. Bizarre.

Did you see this reply Andy74? Genuinely interested in what two central midfielders you’d go with that give us what we need.
Look, 442 is not some weak formation where you are certain to lose the midfield or the game.
I wouldn’t be playing Mallan in it, same as I wouldn’t play Allan in it but just about any other combination will be fine with it.

But if you win every game regardless of performance you win the league.

There were numerous howlers today.
The Doidge one you mention.
Boyle’s pirouette in the first half when he turned and the guy grabbed him back with both hands. Cynical and a yellow.
He reached for his pocket in the first half when Mallan got stamped on then decided not to book the guy.
Adam should have been carded for persistent in the first half. The ludicrous one in the second half down the bottom corner when Boyle was fouled and the linesman flagged for it only to be over-ruled by the hopeless Willie.
Those are the obvious ones that come to mind.

Adam at waist height with his leg fully outstretched too. Seen red given for them, would have been super soft but not even a booking.

I actually do like your posts Andy and I find myself agreeing a lot more with your outlook.
Here's a question - given the emergence of Doig and Mackie, would you consider Lewis Stevenson in the midfield area centrally ? I'm a wee bit biased in my feelings towards Lewy, but I've often thought he has the industry, tenacity, and more importantly the technical ability with the ball to keep possession and keep the play circulating. Still a very fit guy too. Him next to Gogic ?
I think Ross sees a partnership with Gogic and Magennis moving forward.

442 as a formation is fine, but you do need almost specialist positions in midfield. Almost all rounder, like Ferguson & McCrorie at Aberdeen. We don’t have those players and it’s suicide to stick to 442 with the players we have IMO. If Ross wants to play 442, that’s fine but he needs to sign the players needed for it and until he does play whatever formation that uses 3 midfielders to mitigate all that the players we do have lack.

I thought Doidge had a very good second half. I thought Paul McGinn looked tired today. There were a couple of times in the second half especially when the ball broke wide on the right and I was expecting to see McGinn charge in and pick up the ball - but he seemed to be a yard off it. Just don’t think it was his best today.
Very difficult to pick a MOTM today but I thought Newell was good in patches and not so good in others. Was good to see Daz have a fairly decent game and I thought Mackie did well. Boyle was much better in spells today than I’ve seen him for weeks and I thought Halberg made a big difference when he came on.

I should have posted earlier: I've set up the "pie stand" in the kitchen for half time scran on these streamed games. Today wasn't a pie as such but more of a brunch theme - pancakes (made the proper way - with the eggs seperated and the whites whipped to just before meringue stiffness then folded into the batter), bacon and maple syrup and also a cheeky wee retro bucks fizz.
For the right wage I can set up a cheeky stall within the East stand at Easter Road :greengrin

Disagree. We all used to play 442 and no talk of specialists.
You do need players that can do a bit of everything in midfield. Commonly used to be known as central midfielders. We have some of those.
Playing 3 is also fine but you then need to lose something from elsewhere.
We have good wide players so best not to lose one of those and our strikers play better with partners.
Formations are a bit over emphasised by fans. Think today showed that being sharp and quick with the ball and getting stuck in are far more important. They might have had an extra man in midfield but we weren’t being beaten there.

After the first half I was gonna E Mail Hibs and ask for my money back, it was woeful. Better 2nd half, but how could it have been worse.
Big Daz played well, Murphy took his goal well after good play by Nisbet and I thought Mackie had a good game.
Am I the only one who gets really annoyed when the ref gives a free kick after a forward plays the ball past a defender with nowhere to go and then runs into him as Collum did for Dundee in the first half, what the hell is the defender supposed to do FFS?
Overall we are through, which is a positive, but the ongoing issues with poor passing and at times woeful finishing remain, I mean our shooting is terrible, Nisbet should have done a lot better with the one that came off the post to him and that was followed by Newell, Boyle and Wright blasting decent opportunities miles over the bar, Wright's was so bad I actually laughed out loud. Talking of which I was moved to do the same in the first half when either Murphy or Newell, can't remember which one, under no pressure whatsoever played a 10 yard pass straight out of play.
We need to sharpen up all over the pitch, because when it gets so bad you are laughing at your own teams players you know there's a problem

So we don’t have a single centre midfielder at the club?
Whether in due course we can get better, I’m sure we can but John McGinn isn’t coming back so I’m reasonably comfortable that Gogic, Newell, Hallberg and Magennis are all central midfield players that can play in a 442. So can Stephen McGinn but I don’t think he’s really here to be playing unless it is an emergency.

We have plenty players that play there. None that offer a bit of everything, which is what I was asking about.
We won’t have any real success playing with any of them as a central two. We’ll win games as we have better players than most teams, but that area of the pitch will stop us getting an real success unless addressed.

442 used to be the default formation in the 90s, now the default is some variation with 3 in the middle. That’s why playing with a two only works if you have specialist players to mitigate being up against 3. No two midfielders we have, have what is needed to play in a two and it’s setting them up to fail by doing so IMO.
I also think we have more quantity than quality in midfield with most of them being a similar level to Aberdeen’s squad depth. I don’t think any of our central midfielders would get into the Aberdeen starting 11. Newell and Gogic have been improvements but we need to transition them into excellent squad players rather than starters if we’re to take the next step IMO.

Aberdeen's midfield is miles better than ours. Lewis Ferguson would be the best player at the club if we had him, MCrorie is better than Gogic and when fit McGeough would be a starting centre mid for us.

He is. I think from today’s game him and Sean Mackie only seem to have a weakness in decision making. It’ll be inexperience and probably needing confidence but they both work tremendously hard. One assist from Sean Mackie today and he’s MOM for me. And Gullan injects life each time he’s come off the bench. Very positive about them.

our 442 has affected Boyle more than most. We have him at his best when we are breaking the lines for him to exploit. In the flat four he almost always gets the ball infront of defence. His pace is his gift, he's technically not the most gifted winger in 1:1 situations. We obv miss Allan for those passes, but Newell etc are more than capable.
