My great memory of Ray clemence is Kenny Dalglish's goal through the legs at the Hibs end at Hampden 😁

Growing up when we played the home internationals he and Shilton were England's keepers. Happy memories of being a kid and watching him.

A stalwart of my 1970s football sticker albums. Great keeper who would probably have won well over 100 caps if he hadn't spent most of his career fighting for the No 1 spot with Peter Shilton. I always preferred Clemence. RIP Ray.

A seemingly really nice guy, and he was a really good keeper. But for me he was nowhere near as good as Shilton, just my opinion though. RIP Ray Clemence.

His book Clemence on Goalkeeping was a great read. It's out of print but I picked up a copy in a charity shop a few years back. It really should be a must read for any aspiring goalkeepers.

Too young to remember him playing but he was one of those names always referenced when great keepers were spoken about.

RIP.

:agree:

Clemence and Shilton were the England regulars when I was a kid and I used to marvel that England had two such great goalkeepers at the same time.

RIP, Ray.

Mine too. What an intro to supporting Scotland. If only we had players like that now!

Very sad news this.

He was one of the main football faces from the 70's and 80's when I was growing up. An exceptional goalkeeper and seemed a right nice bloke too.

RIP son

A Liverpool great, RIP Ray.

Yep brilliant goalie in his time and seemed a decent guy spoke well of KD in the Kenny documentary a few years back. Can remember seeing him save a John Brownlie penalty at ER which would have put Hibs 2 0 up in a European tie. Was an iconic moment for me after he signed for Tottenham his first game back at Anfield getting a huge heartwarming ovation when he ran towards the Kop at the start of the game. RIP Ray.

Obviously remembered for his through the legs clanger but was a great keeper. England were spoilt for keepers then with Shilton and Clemence fighting it out. Apparently a lovely guy too. RIP

One of the players who never made the wrong kind of headlines. I wonder how many caps he would have won had Shilton not been around.

How many caps would Shilton have won if the manager had stuck with him instead of playing them alternately?

Yep remember that bizarre game about situation seemed very odd.

Pretty easy to work that out 😉

Anyone remember Joe Corrigan, the other keeper who was very good as well if I recall. Unfortunately for him he had the 2 world class goalies to compete with.
Corrigan would probably have been first choice keeper for most countries in his prime

Pretty easy to work that out 😉

I brought it up due to the banter I used to have with an old workmate (a guy from Bristol who was a Rovers supporter and had Liverpool as his second team). We would often argue about which goalie was the better and (without any bias for his team) I always thought Shilton was the better of those two exceptional keepers. I also thought that Seaman and those two were the best I have seen in goals for England.

Shilton held the record for the number of caps for a long long time and if either he or Clements had been chosen consistently one of them would still have that record.

England were certainly blessed with keepers you could call world class at that time and as someone else mentioned Joe Corrigan was no mug either. Best England keeper I ever saw was slightly before then though, had to be Gordon Banks.

Rest in Peace Ray and thanks for the memories
