Stanley Baxter has come out. He is 94. I hope the years he has left are happier. ‘He struggled to come to terms with his sexuality’. Did he? Or do gay people struggle against hatred from that first unkind word or deed? Homophobia keeps people in the closet not ‘homosexuality’.

Homophobia keeps people in the closet not ‘homosexuality’.I didn't know he was married and always thought that he might be gay. I read the piece in the Daily Mail and it really is tragic the lives that homosexuals were forced to lead up until fairly recently.

I realise that there are still problems with prejudice, but there's no doubt that things are far better than they were. Had baxter been born say 40 years later he probably could have been a star without the tortured life.

I worked with him briefly in 79/80. There was little doubt in my mind about his sexuality, but the public persona confused the hell out of my naive young mind.

Prejudice has so many victims.
