I've seen this get write-ups and talked about on various newspaper and radio stations so I thought i'd watch it this morning.
If you've seen other documentaries or TED talks on the subject alot of it won't exactly be new - but its thought provoking none the less.
Was interesting to hear from the engineers and designers of the sites. Thought the ex-Google ethics guy come across pretty well.
Trying not to put any spoilers in it but a heart-breaking scene with the wee lassie. That must be going on near every minute of everyday. Thank **** I'm not a kid or teenager on instagram or whatsapp groups these days. Must be relentless.
Thoughts on social media? Started off a very useful tool, quickly turned into an absolute ****ing cancer on society though. Facebook - used for attention seeking. Instagram - one-up-man-ship look how good my life is, twitter - abuse people anonymously. Best thing I did was bin it. If you use it try de-activating for a month to see how you get on, if you miss it batter in. I'm not going to pretend I don't waste hours of my life flicking through my phone but when I do its more stuff i have an interest in and a hobby etc. As opposed to seeing some knob pose next to their grannies coffin before the funeral or someone taking a selfie with Wayne Lineker.

Don't use any Facebook, twitter or any of that other *****. Hibs.net is more than enough Internet gob*****s for me. I hope to **** my wee laddie gives it a miss like me when he's old enough for phones and computers. Never understood the fascination and I never will.then again I'm an antisocial **** so it probably stands to reason social media isn't for me.

It was a good watch. Although it was a documentary the way they told the story made it very entertaining and engaging.
I'm far more conscious of what I click on now, even if the subject matter and headline genuinely interests me.
I've never used Instagram and I'm an occasional user of Facebook, but I very rarely post or repost anything on Twitter although I do follow a few folk. I might get rid of it completely.

I stopped using Facebook back in March around about lockdown time, don't miss it and wont be going back. I am on Twitter, but use it mainly as a news feed.
My oldest daughter who is 20, lost her phone on a night out during the last week. She got it back 2 days later when it was found inside one of the pubs she had been in, but turned down a shift in her work the day after she lost it as she would have to walk to work and sit on her break without her phone and would find it too boring. A lot of people are utterly dependent on their phone, the internet and social media. My kids are constantly amazed when I tell them there was a life before the internet.

I use Facebook a fair bit. My friends are split roughly 50/50 between France and the UK (and elsewhere) and it's good to keep up with what's going on. There are loads of people I would have lost contact with altogether if it hadn't been for Facebook
In addition, I have quite a few (trad) musician pals in both Brittany and Scotland, and Facebook is great for seeing what they're up to.
Yes there are down sides but I can live with them.
I'm also mega strict with my daughters (11 & 15) over what they can and can't do on the Internet.

I deleted my Facebook account after Trump was elected and Twitter at the beginning of lockdown. I don’t miss either.
I found the Netflix doc extremely unsettling. The ease at which populations can be manipulated without even realising it is worrying.
I looked back at my own political development. At the beginning of the Scottish referendum campaign I was 50/50 on the question. By August 2014 I was a rabid cybernat all in for the cause. Did I decide that myself based on watching the debate unfold in a balanced way, or was I influenced by what I was reading every day on Facebook? I think I came to my own conclusion on what’s best for Scotland, but given we know Facebook has been used to facilitate Trump and Brexit, I can’t be sure.
I noticed the other day that the only websites I visit these days are Hibs.net and the BBC. I search for the occasional news story on PS5 or upcoming games. I don’t miss endlessly scrolling through FB or Twitter. If it was up to me they would both be either shut down or at the very least heavily regulated.

I could have written just about all aspects of that, except I haven't deleted FB it Twitter. In fact and I read Guardian feeds.

I am on Facebook but pretty much just share Viz letters or top tips, or my podcast.
In much more active on Twitter, mostly for the podcast again (it’s really useful for that).
Instagram is a load of crap, don’t get the appeal at all.

As you mention in the OP, the documentary doesn't necessarily break new ground, however it presents some really important ideas in a very polished and thought provoking way. Really enjoyed watching it.
I haven't used Facebook for years but still have Messenger for private conversations, just for convenience. I think a lot of my friends and people in my age bracket are the same. My main vices are YouTube and Twitter, though I'm active in attempting to distance myself from online tribalism where possible.
I try not to check social media every day, but I've often fallen into the trap. I've definitely grown up in a generation where it surrounds you at all times, and haven't really known a time, other than early childhood, where it wasn't part of my day to day. So many of the social aspects of my schooling were filtered through an online lense and relied upon our ability to keep up with the additional digital space.
I definitely remember it breaking some kids. Unfortunately, it's bound to be worse now.
What scares me is that truly successful and manipulative rhetoric isn't recognisable to its subjects as rhetoric at all. I'm bound to have been swayed, manipulated, and pushed into different commercial and political directions by algorithmic promotions, however the ones that work best tend go unnoticed.

I loved Bebo and I miss it.
Better times. Connecting with mates at a distance without all the negativity modern social media has brought.

I watched it but it didn't really tell me anything I didn't already know although it was interesting hearing it from the people who were involved in developing it.
I have Facebook but barely ever use it because it is *****. I mainly have it to use the messenger app.
I have Twitter and I use it everyday (I don't post things very much but I read it everyday). I don't treat it as a way to get news etc because if you do that then I reckon it's easy to make it an echo chamber. I essentially use it for entertainment because I choose who I follow so what I see on there is 99% of the time stuff I want to see (mostly related to Hibs, Scottish football, football in general).
I also have Instagram but I only ever look at 'my feed' so only ever see things people I follow post. Can't be arsed with these 'influencers' on there who some people absolutely idolise for reasons completely beyond my comprehension.

It has to be pointed out that this aspect of the movie is the most important.
It's not journalists claiming to have discovered something nefarious about social media. It's the inventors of social media showing how it's been turned towards things which are nefarious.

This thread should be merged with the Post Truth Society thread and we can organise the revolution from there. Who’s in?

I didn’t feel like there was particularly nefarious intent anywhere - more that it was an accidental, crazy set of unintended consequences that nobody ever really anticipated happening.
It’s a good watch.
Bleak for the most part but strangely positive for about the last 30 seconds and as the credits roll.
In a personal note - I’m starting to wonder about addictive behaviours I have exhibited, and I’m sure social media has played no small part. My brother was telling me about something you can access on your phone where you can see how often you have picked it up over the course of a day to check messages etc - and the number is often frightening, so he’s dialled down his phone use in a big way.

I bet there most definitely is nefarious intent now and has been for years. The money spent on political bots alone would not be used unless it worked and there is nefarious intent all over them.
An unintended consequence of the original intent sure, but it's there now.

Absolutely.
But I got the feeling that the folk interviewed were a wee bit bemused by the harm that was being done as that had never been the intention.
I get what you mean though. See the change in YouTube over the years - very different since big money, ads etc got involved.
Absolutely.

Agreed. Although all that data harvesting was never going to end well. One of the reasons I've never had a facebook page, just didn't feel right.

Facebook was also quite good fun to begin with, and in more innocent / naive times I didn’t even know what data harvesting was.
It started to change when you ended up being “friends” with your parents and your partner’s parents - who wanted to see what you were up to. If folk with decent intentions want to spy on you, what about those whose intentions aren’t decent?
My Facebook is almost totally dominated by work-related stuff now and it has a corrosive effect on me. Polished posts about how good other people’s work is, smart photos of how classy their working environments are, photos of all their stuff outside work showing how successful they all are. In reality I have fallen behind my peers and that’s fine, but it shouldn’t have the emotional effect it does and Facebook just makes it all so much worse. Add to that that people in my line of work can be struck off for inappropriate social media activity and it’s really just become a hellish minefield of badness.
A long way from the smiling carefree photos which were the last ones I put on when Scotland played in Paris in 2007.

Just seen this. Pretty terrifying in all honesty.
Just seen this. Pretty terrifying in all honesty. The most terrifying part, and I've only watched half of it, is the stats for self harm and suicide among youngsters brought up using social media. Those companies should be held accountable in some way for that aspect.

Brilliant TV. But it was a fairly simple repetition of that self evident truth; ‘If you’re not paying for the product, YOU are the product’.

I read Twitter often each day for news but I make sure to watch which accounts I'm following after going down a right wing rabbit hole a few years ago.
One minute I'm watching some videos on various centre right US accounts, the next minute I'm on a "Red Ice TV" page with a video about the preservation of white children wondering how the F I got to that page...
Recently I was thinking about the amount of time I mindlessly scroll and think about what I could be actually doing with that time, I could be speaking fluent Japanese by now..
