A worthy three points tonight, even if we did make it a little tough for ourselves towards the end. I felt there were very many positives but I want to address the negatives first. We conceded two goals due to poor play with the ‘sinner’ in both cases being Ryan Porteous who, until conceding a penalty had been enjoying a fine performance. The tackle for the penalty was just pure stupidity as the guy was going nowhere with Gogic about to pounce. Sticking a leg out like he did made Bobby Madden’s job an easy one. For the second goal I felt he mistimed his jump but to be fair he had to go for the header as he’d no idea who might be behind him.

It would be wrong of me to think and I’m certainly not trying to imply that Ryan was the only offender as Paul McGinn had a hand in their first goal by getting caught on the wrong side of his opponent who then made for our penalty area. McGinn was also ‘guilty’ at the first Hamilton penalty which I’ve watched from different angles as my brother thought the challenge had started outside the box. I feel the guy had one foot inside the area and one outside which unfortunately for Paul meant it was indeed a penalty.

Now to the positives and the first of those for me was setting up as a standard 4-4-2. That meant young Josh Doig being amongst the subs with Lewis Stevenson taking up the left back berth whilst Jamie Murphy returned at the expense of Drey Wright. The main positive I drew from this was that we looked very balanced and had more opportunity to build from the back. I felt a wee bit sorry for Josh but it was the right decision in my opinion. I know not everyone will agree with that as some have suggested he should be persevered with as he’ll learn the position better but in all honesty the laddie clearly struggled against Celtic and leaving him in would, in my view, have done more harm than good.

Other positives should be self evident. We passed the ball well; we created numerous chances; Rocky saved a penalty and our movement off the ball was fantastic. There’s more but I won’t bore you with them as they were there for us all to see.

As to the game itself, Hibs started on the front foot and pretty much stayed there for the whole of the first half. After debutant goalkeeper Kyle Gourlay made a couple of fine saves, including a close range Paul Hanlon effort it did seem like it was only a matter of time before Accies conceded. The opener, when it came, was born out of a fine run by Martin Boyle who was brought down about twenty yards from goal. With Gourlay seemingly happy with his wall he was beaten low to his right by a fine strike from Kevin Nisbet.

Accies were lying so deep they were inviting Hibs on to them and the hosts duly obliged by nabbing a second after a brilliant cross into the box from Newall was met by the head of Nisbet with the ball going into the net via the hands of Gourlay and the underside of the bar. Doidge was then put through on goal but in a one on one it was Gourlay that won the battle by blocking the shot as he dived at Christian’s feet.

As the half drew to a close, Newall went over in the box and though it wasn’t a penalty it resulted in the Hibs man damaging a shoulder. Moments later, Joe took a knock to the head and it was no surprise that he didn’t appear for the second half; being replaced by Hallberg.

At the other end, Rocky hadn’t had a lot to do but when a clumsy McGinn challenge resulted in a penalty, our keeper dived low to his left to save the effort from Ogkmpoe. At the time I fretted whether Madden might flash a red at McGinn and was relieved to see only a yellow.

Just past the hour mark, Paul Hanlon made it 3-0 when a Hallberg free kick to the far post was headed back across goal and the skipper rose to score from close range. This should have taken a lot of pressure off but Brian Rice had his whole team playing further up the park and that was causing Hibs some problems. Doidge nearly got a fourth when meeting a perfect cross from Boyle but that man Gourlay was on hand again to make a fine instinctive save.

It was a more even game now and the visitors proved they have a never say die attitude by throwing everything at Hibs. Their efforts brought a reward fifteen minutes from time when McGinn was easily beaten and as substitute Callum Smith tried to step past Porteous the Hibs man left a leg hanging and brought the Accies man down. A silly challenge and punished accordingly when Ross Callachan blasted the ball home from the spot.

I was getting nervous now as Hibs were finding it difficult when Accies took possession and moved forward in numbers. Their persistence paid off with around five minutes to go when Callum Smith found time on their left to lift a ball into the danger area and in trying to head it clear Porteous didn’t get enough on the ball which looped over Marciano and landed in the net.

I mentioned positives earlier and for my money one of those positives was us seeing out the game. It’s not pretty to watch but we largely kept possession in running down the clock and took the ball to the corner flag a couple of times too.

As regards individual performances I found it hard to single out one player when a number of them played extremely well. Two of my contenders were replaced before the end and I know the sponsors gave the award to Kevin Nisbet but for me Jamie Murphy just tipped the balance.

The players

Marciano – I felt a bit sorry for Rocky tonight as he saved a penalty but lost two poor goals due to errors by his team mates.

McGinn – I’m a big admirer of Paul but I thought he wasn’t quite at it tonight and his tackle for the first penalty could have cost us dear but for Rocky saving it.

Porteous – For the first seventy odd minutes Ryan was immense although he did struggle a bit with the physical presence of Ogkmpoe. His silly tackle for the penalty cost us a goal and his weak attempt at a header resulted in their second but as Yogi Hughes said after the match, Ryan is a fine young player and will learn from those incidents.

Hanlon – I thought Paul had a really good game tonight. He was good in the air, strong in the tackle and creative with his use of the ball when we were pushing forward.

Stevenson – Lewis is a very good defender and he proved that tonight. I must admit I had a wee smile to myself when I noticed his reaction to the own goal. Ryan might be a big lad but Lewis gave him both barrels.

Boyle – Martin gave Accies all sorts of problems and especially so in the first half. He must be a nightmare to play against and if I had a gripe about tonight it would be that he needs to run at his full back marker more often.

Gogic – Alex had a fantastic first half and I enjoyed his battles with Ross Callachan – two guys who gave and received no quarter. I thought he was quieter for a spell in the second but also that he finished strongly when we had to defend our 3-2 lead.

Newell – Joe took a couple of sore dunts tonight and he’ll be feeling the pain in the morning so it’s as well he’ll get a couple of weeks off now as I don’t think he’ll be in the picture for the Brora game. In his 45 minutes tonight I thought he played very well and his delivery for the second goal was top drawer.

Murphy – I know some voiced reservations at his signing but now we’ve seen what he brings, perhaps those reservations will lessen or maybe even disappear. Jamie is strong on the ball, has a decent turn of pace and perhaps most importantly he can pick a pass. On several occasions tonight he provided passes that were absolutely superb and dare I say it, those passes reminded me of Scott Allan at his best. He linked very well with Lewis down the left and showed that unlike many footballers he doesn’t just have the one foot.

Nisbet – I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, we have won a watch with this laddie. Took both his goals well and whilst that’s his main job for the team he offered so much more. Great movement and some lovely layoffs, together with an admirable work rate plus I’m convinced he’ll score a hatful of goals for Hibs.

Doidge – Christian’s luck was out tonight as he was denied two goals by Kyle Gilmour. The thing about Doidge is that he never stops and can often be our best defender with headed clearances.

Hallberg – With Joe unable to continue, Melker was given the nod which I confess surprised me a little as I thought Mallan or Wright would have been ahead of him in the queue. Fair play to the lad though as he put in a good shift and was involved in the build up to Paul Hanlon’s goal.

Wright – Replaced the tiring Jamie Murphy on the left of midfield and looked comfortable enough there.

Mallan – Stevie only got the last five minutes so there’s little to comment on really.

Bobby Madden – Had a good game in my opinion.

Jack Ross – Clearly happy with the outcome and taking time to think about who might play against Brora on Wednesday.

Murphy is getting sharper and you can tell. Very composed and will play a big part this season.

Hallberg for Joe didn’t work. Thought he was poor. Not sure what he brings to the team.

Doidge was clean through and has to score it was a poor miss. Nisbet would have slotted that away. Wasn’t poor luck, bad finishing. He contributed well throughout though. Always good in the air and brings others into play.

3-0 going on 5 but we were very sloppy in the end.

3 points and our start to the season has been very good.

The biggest positive was Murphy. My man of the match. His first 2 games for Hibs showed him well of the pace but after a couple of weeks sharpening up he was good against Celtic and was top notch tonight. Wonderful link up play and incisive passes. Adding him to Boyle will make Hibs difficult to pin down for the bottom 8 teams.

Other positives;
what a season Hanlon is having and probably more worth a Scotland call up than Porteous.
Boyle, Nisbet and Newell all played very well tonight.

Biggest negatives was decision making of McGinn for both penalties. Tried to be sneeky and bring the guy down outside the box for the 1st penalty. Should have let the big haddie go and see if he could beat Marciano. Risked being sent of and lucky the same guy took the penalty. 2nd penalty incident, instead of staying goal side of Smith, Paul decides to nip in on front him to steal the ball and miscalculates resulting in Smith being in on Ryan who leaves his leg hanging out as you described. It was 3-0, no need for either player to do as they did.
After the great save from the Doidge header we went to sleep.

Other observation - looks like Hallberg is back up for Gogic or Newell so contrary to what some folk here think, may still have a role at Hibs although not a first choice.

Overall, until the Doidge saved header Hibs were great and Hamilton couldn't live with us. A great watch until then and I thought Murphy was fantastic.

Decent summing up of the game and the individual performances.

Jack Ross didn't go overboard with his comments after the game, but I have a feeling he wont have been as kind to the players behind closed doors. We could easily have ended up blowing that game through slackness and lack of concentration in the 2nd half. We allowed the game to get stretched at 3 - 0 up and that allowed Hamilton far too much possession in and around our box. At times it was like a cup tie with both teams looking for the winner, Hibs should never have allowed that to happen from a position where we could have stifled the game while still being easily capable of a 4th goal.

Rocky .... 7 ... No chance with either goal, but saved a penalty and was solid throughout.

McGinn .... 5 .... I didn't think it was one of his better games, caught out for the first pen and while folk are rightly having a wee go at Porto for the 2nd pen McGinn absolutely sold himself in an attempt to win the ball out wide which allowed the guy Porto brought down to charge into the box. Just an off night though, he's been solid as hell in most games.

Porteous ... 6 ..... Absolutely strolled it in the first half, looking every inch worth his Scotland call up. Only he will know why he stuck out a leg for the pen, but his OG can happen to any defender, just how many have we seen like that over the years from better players than him.

Hanlon .... 7 .... The pick of the back 4, I cant recall him putting a foot wrong in that game ... oh, and scored what turned out to be the winner.

Stevenson .... 6 .... Solid as ever, a better defender than Doig, but not as good going forward ... mind you, at one point a thought he was going to score a great solo effort, until I realised that if he was going to shoot it would have to be with his right foot :greengrin

Gogic .... 7 .... Here there and everywhere, especially in the first half, but as the OP said, just as importantly in the closing stages of the 2nd half. If there's one criticism of him, not just in this game, its that sometimes he takes one more touch on the ball than he needs to before passing it. Oh, and on a personal note, I bloody hate that socks at half mast thing ... Cummings used to do it as well .... grrrr !!!

Newell ... 7 .... Had an excellent 45 minutes, brilliant ball for our second and without doubt his departure weakened us.

Murphy ... 7 .... Another who showed what he can do in that game, perhaps didn't always come up with an end product, but he was always willing to run at defenders and did produce some nice passes.

Boyle ... 7 .... A thorn in the flesh of Hamilton for much of the game, as usual not all of his crosses or decisions were the best, but nobody can deny he had an impact on the game, unlucky not to score with a fine effort. Is it just me, or is it becoming evident that he has lost, if not half, then a quarter of a yard, not only does he seem unable to out run defenders one on one like he used to, but he also seems more reluctant to try it, preferring to cut infield.

Doidge ... 7 ... Put in a ton of work and very unlucky not to score, with a Boyle cross just being cut out before it could reach him and a header which if it had gone either side of the keeper would have been a stick on goal ... still a decent save mind.

Nisbet ... 8 .... What a crying shame that this kid doesn't have 16,000 folk roaring him on. So unlucky not to score another hat trick, but the two goals he did score were both excellent, he showed for the ball really well and played some nice lay offs and passes, not to mention tracking back effectively a couple of times too. What a prospect he is, the thought that he might get even better puts me in my happy place.

Subs:

Hallberg ... 6 .... I'm not saying he had a bad game because he didn't really, but it's all a bit 'meh' with him for me if I'm honest. Looking at his Hibs career so far I just cant get Slivka MKII out of my head ... and I know it shouldn't but it doesn't help that he looks like he should be playing bass for 'AH HA' sorry.

Wright ... 6 ..... Did fine when he came on, again without starting any fires ... he may have been a main man at St Johnstone, but it looks like that might be a tougher task at Easter Road with Murphy and Boyle ahead of him and Magennis on the way to hamper any chance he might have of forcing his way into midfield. I'm aware its early days for him though.

Mallan .... 4 ..... Did two things of note ... the first was a good midfield challenge not long after coming on. Unfortunately the second was to put a corner in the last, the very last, place you should put it with minutes to go, your team ahead by a single goal and with 4 opposition players left up the park in the hope they would be handed a last throw of the dice by just such a piece of stupidity ... no wonder Porteous was flaming at him.

Bobby Madden ..... Its not often you can say a ref who gave the opposition two penalties had a decent game ... but he did.

Was the foul for the 1st penalty outside the box?

Also thought the ref was ok - but still missed a few challenges.

I must say I love Friday night games - obviously a 3pm Saturday kick off is great but having something to look forward to at beginning of the weekend plus frees up Saturday to do other things.

Overall happy with the performance- players will know they lost focus but it could have be 7 or 8 with the chances we created.

Been a great start to the season.

Good report as ever - seems to me there were lots of positives, but I wish we would make more of our opportunities going forward. Think our players should work harder at the training ground on tactical awareness, i.e. knowing where their team mates are at any given time, too many stray passes when it matters - it was a very poor Hamilton team after all. Defensive lapses of concentration need to be sorted out. We clearly deserved the win, but we could have done so much for for our gd.

Brilliant Jonnyboy

Good to see Murphy getting up to speed he may well be a replacement for Scott Allan in the short term

A terrific start to the season for us and I make Paul Hanlon my POTY so far

I agree with Nae Nookie what was Stevie Mallan doing swinging in a hopeless corner at the death?

Thick or what ?

Well done keep up the good work

The concession of the two goals took some shine off what had been a vg performance, as did Ferguson's last-minute winner for the Sheep. The 4-point lead over them was looking good until his goal. Unfair to call it a sclaff but it was hardly a bullet and found its way through legs to beat their goalie. Shame.

Loved the first half, with Murphy, Newall and Nisbet looking very slick and Boyle running at them again and again. It looked like the players were really enjoying themselves, although there won't be many teams that sit back so passively like the Accies did in the opening 45 minutes.
Lapses of concentration in the second half will annoy JR since it really should have been a five or six nil job.

Allan may be a different player to Murphy but in terms of Hibs a comparison is warranted. In my view Murphy will be far more important for us than Allan. He holds a position, picks the right pass at the right time(Allans biggest failing) and works hard. It would be useful to get Scottie fully fit again and providing competition and options off the bench but for most of his time here I always thought the team were unbalanced as he was shoehorned in and a man short when we didn't have the ball. Murphy can make the killer pass and also get us moving forward as well as being useful when we don't have the ball

Excellent John. Absolutely no blame to Porto for the og, these things happen, but his tackle for the pen was ludicrous. I think he struggles to concentrate for a full 90 mins, just before he conceded the pen he was very casual about 30 yards out but got away with it & I hoped that would help him focus. Mental fitness & strength is as important as physical fitness & I hope the Club are aware & working on this with Ryan.

Good post - agree 100%

HE needs to cut out the "bomb-scare" moments.
