Most of you will never have heard of Frans who sadly died on Friday after a short illness aged 89.

I got to know him latterly through work I did and a brilliant character he was. This summary from World Referee helps explain the man behind the whistle 😀😂.

He will be sorely missed in his native Netherlands.

The Hibs connection? He was referee at the first leg UEFA Cup match v Liverpool in 1975/76 which Hibs won 1-0

Interesting read and sounds like quite an eccentric guy.

Imagine if he'd worn that tight jumpsuit with leather belt at Easter Road in 1975? :greengrin

That was a good read. Certainly sounded a true character. RIP Frans.

Some cracking stories on there.

The world, and football in particular, needs to learn to embrace the eccentric over the bland once more.

RIP Frans

We won the game with a Joe Harper goal from an Arthur Duncan Cross, Brownlie penalty was saved. I was there.

Sorry, meant it would have won the tie given our away goal in the return game.
Brownlie's penalty was abysmal, barely reached the keeper.

Yes we would have been through, it was so unlike him, maybe nerves, it was some night though.

Yeah, poor guy.
I still remember the horrible sickly feeling in my 15 year old stomach when it happened.
If John had scored, Edwards goal in the return would have kept us 2 goals clear and only an hour to play. Damn Toshack.

Watch the following highlights of the Hibs V Liverpool game from 1975
At 4:18 Hibs win the penalty and at 4:20 yer man is seen in close up for a couple of seconds.
He has very small shorts as described in your quoted link!

Football & Hibs, what ca I say

Who knew those few years were the zenith of supporting Hibs in the modern era until recent times.
Not me!!! It was a rough 40 years after that.
Then it got good again
Then the pandemic happened!!! ****s sake, I miss going to games.
