View Full Version : Staunch Douglas Ross - should Hibs complain if he is linesman in a Hibs Rangers game?

Seeing a professional football linesman masquerade as a short-term minor political leader is something currently unique to Scottish football AFAIK.

I for one don't like to hear Douglas Ross speak, he uses all the dog-whistle words that appeal to the very worst elements of the Rangers* support.

Barely an interview goes by without him getting in a reference to something or other being "Staunch", or that he will "never surrender" to this or that.

I wouldn't be happy if he was linesman in a match at Ibrox. Would you?

No, he's completely conflicted, he shouldn't be refereeing any longer.

I wouldn't feel comfortable with him refereeing any of our games never mind games at Ibrox.

I'm not happy he's Douglas Ross, but someone's got to do it.

It might be difficult to steer every official away from being involved with teams they have an allegiance to but when it's displayed as blatantly as some do there's a case for scrutiny.
I'm not sure Ross is up there with Tiny Wharton, Bobby Davidson, Brian McGinley or Craig Thomson but he's showing all the potential.

He isn’t a very good linesman. His “performance” in our game up at Elgin was ridiculously bad.

Surely he shouldn't be a Linesman in any game, given his current political role.

Nothing to do with any bias, real or perceived, but if he wants to be taken seriously as the leader of a political group at Holyrood.

Him carrying on in his linesman role could possibly give the impression that his party don't take devolution... or Scotland... very seriously.

:hmmm:

Absolutely. However, I remember him wrongly disallowing a Partick Thistle goal against us a few years ago at ER Like all refs in Scotland he’s hopeless. Whether he's bias is another thing.

Especially as he apperently requested the gig...nothing to do with being Elgin's MP mind, just to save the SFA travel expenses

He was linesman in a game involving us and his own ****ing constituency. Disallowed a perfectly good Hibs goal and the match was involved in a fixing scandal. Unreal he is allowed to still officiate.

Unless there is clear and indisputable evidence of his bias, the SFA and SPFL will do hee haw about the likes of this guy as it would be an admission of weakness in their ranks, which we all know is untrue.

Well he’s proven himself to be a near pathological liar so there is certainly a question of his integrity and honesty in any decision he makes.

No waŷ imo should a sitting MP for that area have been in that role in a game involving the team of his constituency imo.

The offside goal he called was up there with one of the worst ever probably saved him a few votes. :greengrin

Paranoid football supporters, who knew .
FWIW, I suspect he will have to knock the football gig on the head to concentrate on the new day job.
Far too much scope for it going pear shaped at the fitbaw.

There's obviously lots of childish point scoring, it is a Football Forum after all.

That aside, I think anyone in such a high public position should give up certain non-essential, part-time activities like this and be seen to be concentrating on their main role... regardless of which political party they're in.

If the leader of Labour, SNP or the Lib-Dems in Holyrood was doing something similar, I'd take the view they weren't taking devolution, or the Scottish people, seriously.

It may be that the SFA ask him to step down.

They're always a target for criticism; this is one more thing to be shot at, so they might protect themselves by removing him.

Hibs would (in my opinion) never publicly complain about this, however if a sitting SNP politician was to ever run the line at Ibrox I would fully expect a 2,000 word incoherent rant from the Rangers Board and the Union Bears.
