Bit different given that he was still contracted to Rangers after the loan finished therefore would have cost us to get him, this time no transfer fee at the end and that could have influenced the decision.

Glad we bought someone else in.

He’s right footed so curious to see if we play him on left. I’ve seen him score some good goals cutting in off left.

He’s got experience and adds more depth so that’s good too.

Still need a central midfielder though.

Bit like Boyler, little bit of a buzz when he gets the ball. Was wary of him when he played against us for Rangers, can't remember he actually did any damage but there's something about him.
Can't wait to see the pair of them playing in same team and hitting form. Exciting signing

He’s a far better player than Horgan.

The question is does he still have pace about him and the legs to play in a 442. Think he’s more suited to a 433 which I can’t see us playing much.

Forgot to add though that we still have to somehow link our solid defensive base to our great attacking options which has been our Achilles heel so far this season. I would imagine Murphy can carry play up the park sometimes like Squirrel and Horgan do. This will help but still will not resolve the lack of cohesion converting defence into attack.

Exactly the type of singing if one of our competitors had made, we'd all be saying - this is the signing Hibs should be making! If that makes sense! :aok:

I think this will be a good signing. It does smack of Rangers trying to strengthen the opposition against Celtic for this season though. Despite Hibs benefitting from the loan, I don't think its healthy for the league and something that the governing body needs to address.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Rangers loan some other players on the periphery of their squad to Kilmarnock and Motherwell now.

If we ideally want two players for every position, then four wingers makes perfect sense. When you weigh up the quality of Murphy and the fact he can also play more centrally, he's an ideal addition IMO.

We wouldn't be signing Murphy instead of a player in a position we're more in need of additions for. It'll be in addition to.

I think we needed to sign another striker and we now have three central strikers plus Boyle and Murphy who can play up front if needed while Horgan and Wright are able to fill in as attacking midfielders if not playing as wingers.

Gives us cover and flexibility while operating with a relatively small squad.

Also Newell has been dreadful any time I’ve seen him deployed as a winger

I had a wee moan earlier that I wasn’t keen on us signing wingers in their 30’s

Just to start backtracking now, as is my prerogative as a fickle football fan, something I hadn’t taken into consideration was that he was never quick so he’s not really got pace to lose, I think that’s where wingers start to lose their effectiveness. Looking at his spell at Burton it could be that he’s better now than he was when he was younger. Could be similar to Burke at Killie who I think has got better with age.

Steven Gerrard had this to say about Murphy

I am pleased for Jamie because it’s tough when you have a really good player who is training well and showing a great attitude.

Then you pick teams and he’s not involved, so I am pleased he’s got the chance to go to a good club and play.

Jamie deserves that and we wish him well. He is a great lad and has never been a problem. He is low maintenance and he will do well for Hibs.

More curiosity than anything but I wonder what the legality of the deal is at the end of the loan period?

Presumably he can't actually sign anything now as it can only be done 6 months prior to his contract ending, so could he theoretically play a blinder until January and then sign for another team?

Or if he does terribly or has a falling out with the manager, could the club not go through with the contract?

Yep, although this deal suits everyone. Hibs get a player on effectively a 2 year deal, yet dont have to pay a fee for him. The Huns offload a player from their wage bill, but know he can only help in their quest to stop 10inarow and the player gets the security of a 2 year deal. It actually makes sense for all parties.

I’m sure the six month thing is only that players can speak to clubs about a transfer without first getting permission from their current club.

In this case we have had permission from Rangers to discuss terms with Murphy and he has signed a permanent contract that comes into force when his Rangers contract expires

The fact it was announced in that way rather than as a pre-contract agreement suggest to me that it’s likely to be watertight and he is out player for two years. If someone wanted to sign him at the end of this season then they would have to pay us a fee

Gerrard playing a blinder here.

Lennon & Lawell are only too aware of the help Celtic gave to Hibs through their connections of previous years with the signings of Commons. Stokes, McGeough and Henderson and with arrogance and bitterness after the McGinn and Lennon departure have cut off any supply to the greater greens for the forthcoming campaign thinking they can win this 10th title and continue Scottish domination without any support from others. Rangers on the other hand are through short term experience more than aware of the threat Hibs and Aberdeen have for making a difference in the overall campaign by taking points off their fiercest rivals.
Gerrard is actively finding a loan/purchase formula for strengthening both clubs and at the same time limiting the impact these transactions effect down Govan way. By allowing his decent fringe players to leave Ibrox to compete against Celtic and miss out when the Rangers fixture comes around it could be his best chance of indirectly creatIng a more competitive competition aimed at their Old Firm rivals. It is early days however the signs are there and Celticshould remember that Edinburgh through history will always make a difference over a season and will forever be the Old Firms biggest testing venue in Scotland with Aberdeen.

So much paranoia in Scottish football but I actually think there might be an element of truth in that. McCrorie, Murphy, Hastie all out to teams you'd expect to give Celtic a game while unable to play against Rangers. Seems too convenient.

Agree. But if it helps everyone out who really cares.

The Hun fans do seem to hold a grudge against us after the 2016 Cup Final and the also the refusal to sell Scott Allan to them, but conveniently forget we've dealt with the them many times in the past with transfers, like selling Thomson and Whitaker in 2007.

If Murphy was to score the winner in the Scottish Cup Final against Celtic in December, I doubt any Hibs or Rangers fan could care less he was on loan at the time. 🙂

No because you can’t play against the team you are on loan from.
