Yet another stroke of bad luck for an outspoken critic of Vladimir Putin. It seems to be a recurring them in Russia. Stray bullets hitting people in the back, poison finding it's way into their drinks and meals, accidentally injured in police custody, kidnapped, contracting mysterious unidentified illnesses.

It's strange that so many of these people have one thing in common......

Will be interesting to see what Putin arranges for his assets in the US and UK when they are no longer useful. Current signs are that neither the US nor the UK will have completely collapsed by the time Trump and Johnson are booted out, and Putin must be annoyed that the EU is still going strong. Will we see tapes from a hotel room in Moscow and a villa in Italy? :dunno:

The bravery of people like this man to stand up to Putin and similar despots, you’ve got to admire it. Much easier just to keep your head down. On the same subject, if the Salisbury Poisoning is still available on iPlayer I highly recommend it.

UK govt will turn a blind eye again because the Russians fund the Tory party.

Does Salmond still have his Russia Today gig? I wonder if he'll cover it?

He's cashing it in, according to The Times, to fund his legal costs.

That was my thoughts when I saw this as well.

He must have lived in fear for his life on a daily basis...and that fear became a reality today.

To commit your life to the cause like that, to stand up to an all powerful despot takes a special kind of person.

Democracy has all but died since Putin took power twenty years ago, as has any notion of a free and impartial press.

Who'd have thought that putting a former KGB officer in charge would have led to this.

There was some guy on the news today saying that the worst thing for Putin would be for him to die. I wonder if they’re trying to grind him down with lots of non lethal attacks and spells in jail. Fair play to the guy as it takes balls to stand up to Putin.

I'm not sure anyone will be surprised reading that.

Shocked that they thought they could get away with it twice.

Not in the least. Democracy is dead in Russia and there are no limits to what Putin is willing to do.

Incidentally, I wonder if the Russian Police representative that said they saw no reason to open an investigation into the incident until they were told the name of the poison used will now change his tune.

I don't think they thought they would get away with it. They just don't care. In fact, I'm sure they thought it was likely they would get caught and using the same substance is a deliberate middle finger to the west.

Putin knows that apart from some stern words and finger wagging there is nothing we can do. He's laughing at us.

Spot on, Putin knows he's untouchable and just does what he wants and doesn't care who knows it
