A few weeks ago, a friend invited me onto a FB Group - which was apparently a campaign group for getting kids back to school. Long story short, it was kind of a militant Karen kind of page.

However, off the back of that I have found another page "March on Holyrood" which I was totally and utterly taken aback by. In short, the premise is that it is a campaign page for marching for civil liberties (which have been allegedly stolen from us). However, it is absolutely full of some of the craziest conspiracies there is out there. Lot's of talk about Donald Trump eliminating the Illuminati, Bill Gates Vaccinations etc etc. I actually watched a video on there the other day, some guys doing an online interview thing - basically the guy said that the lockdown was implemented so that the government could secretly install 5G in the schools! Now the kids are back, the Army will go into the schools and infect your child. The child will then be taken away from you and your house will be demolished in the process - you will then be forced to vaccinate if you want your child/life back - this life will now be some sort of Government pawn.

Worryingly though, there were hundreds and hundreds of people commenting on how they were in agreement with it all, often adding on more complex attachments to the theory.

I don't know if i was just naive to it all before and wasn't paying attention - has it always been like this, or is the political/Covid environment made it worse?

It also leaves me wondering - is the internet actually a good thing? I have commented on a few posts on those pages and been called some pretty foul names, the main theme is a sheep for following mainstream media - they then post youtube videos and talk about them being more awoken as they have researched it more (on YouTube)

Just wondered what peoples thought's on it all were?

These radges have always been about but as you say now with the Internet it's easier for them to find each other

I actually love a good conspiracy theory, mainly to see how gullible some people are, but in this day in age we have to be careful about actual "facts" as on all subjects people seem to think their opinion is a matter of fact and it's so easy to spread nonsense

I know someone who believes in all this stuff, even today he put up some conspiracy about the Scottish government lying to us as the daily death figures for covid have a caveat that it's for people who have tested positive in the last 28 days, he thinks that means they are lying and trying to cover it all up

I even pointed out that the National Records for Scotland publishes all deaths every Wednesday and that Sturgeon reiterates this on an almost daily basis but that didn't fit his agenda

One of the girls I went to school with is a 5G, anti mask nut. She is very “alternative”. Think hairy armpits, Earth mother.

I read some of her barmy posts. Thankfully a lot of her actual friends slap her down quite regularly for being mental.

There is a question mark about how covid related deaths should be recorded and viewed but I believe that both Westminster and Holyrood are now doing so in the same way? There's probably a legitimate discussion to be had around that.

Wider, proper nutty, conspiracy theories are quite something else though. I have just discoverded in the past week that one of my cousins has gone (or has always been) a full-on anti-vaxer, covid conspiracy nut who believes the whole thing is either a complete fabrication or a cover for the desire by dark forces to have the entire population forcibly vaccinated for some other ulterior and bad motive.

My dilemma isn't about the barking issue she's chosen to break cover on as a tin-foil hatter, it's about how I react to her in future. I find it very hard to pretend around people like this that I think they are anything other than a hamper, a car, a pleasant spot, a sunny day and a flask of tea short of a picnic. Easier to ignore when its just some git, trickier when it's family...

So, I guess that is probably what is fueling this intrigue on my part. My sister, after 25 years of marriage left her husband last year. Always held beliefs that I guess myself and most of my immediate family would have. She met some dude who is into all of this stuff, and she is now a 100% badge wearing tin foil hatter. Some of the stuff she was coming out with was increasingly out there.

It all kind of came to a head about 6 weeks ago, they had stopped by to see me and in the conversation they both likened being asked to wear a face covering to Nazi Germany. I lost it with them and we haven't really spoken since.

I absolutely understand what you say about it being tough with family !

Think the group is called UsforThemScot, the business owner who set them up apparently has political ambitions. There posts are crazy, but the lack of empathy for those vulnerable to covid and their self entitlement is concerning. They don't like Sturgeon and claim to be liberal conservatives.

Yeah, that's the one. A very concerning group - some crazy posts on there and as you said a total and utter lack of care for those who might be vulnerable. I got booted from the group because there was a post suggesting that all at risk teachers or those who had been shielding should be sent home. I pointed out that there is roughly 2500 schools in scotland - if the average was 1 teacher per school then our whole education system would fall apart. It was claimed that i am a sleep walking sheep !

They're proper mental. There's an English version too. There claim is they are fighting for education for all the vulnerable kids, which would be fair enough, if they considered many will have vulnerable parents/guardians, who they then go on to slaughter. They're under an illusion that Swinney will meet all their increasingly needy demands.

When I was at uni I had a mate who was insistent that 9/11 didn't happen. Not that it was an inside job or a convenient event for the US government and their foreign policy plans but rather that it didn't happen at all and was an extreme example of the Mandela Effect manipulated by a global government.

His theory was that the WTC buildings had been slowly dismantled over a period of months with little fanfare or formal announcement several years before. When the news reports of the plane attacks was created and aired this, complimented with thousands of images of the towers supposedly in the weeks and months before the attacks, was so powerful that people didn't question the reports even if they had doubts about the veracity of them. Over time the footage and images were shown so often that people just accepted it. Further the well known conspiracy theorists were all government employees as well. They were paid to put forward theories that could be easily debunked by engineers and the like to lend further weight to the official story, give further reason to keep showing the footage and keep the 'official line' in the public eye.

I lost touch with him over the years but a friend recently directed me to his Facebook page to look at his views on coronavirus. This is all a conspiracy to plunge people into poverty, make them fearful and turn them back to religion. It is being coordinated by the Israeli state along with the American Christian right, the Vatican, the Freemasons, the House of Saud and of course the Rothschilds. Quite how those groups, many of whom are suspicious of or openly hostile to each other fit together is anyone's guess.

He was actually a really nice guy but he had a habit of finding really weird rabbit holes on the Internet. He also smoked an unholy amount of weed. I liked a joint or 2 as much as anyone when I was younger but this guy was scary. His only real hobby was collecting memorabilia from Scandinavian black metal bands and reading books about Odinism.

Sort of underlines the "don't do drugs kids" message. The bloke had clearly smoked way too much.

Which reminded me of a guy I knew who was the same, likeable with the the odd zany conspiracy theory, but his big thing was the BBC's overuse of the Breaking News banner on the news channel. He would go berserk when it appeared on screen, screaming it didn't merit being deemed as breaking, even when it actually was. Took it to another level, wrote to the Head of BBC, his MP, everyone & their Granny. Wanted everyone to join his campaign to get it banned when nobody had even noticed it let alone bothered about it.

Was on a local site for the part of Bath I grew up in (Larkhall). Some people have created a new group because the old group got infested with posts like the below post. Problem was the Admin of that particular group was a paid up member of the conspiracy set.

Utter Bat**** Crazy stuff.

“ Before i share my experience and ask a Question.
I think its important to urge people to concider.
These statements..

You are defined by Your actions.

We are Shaped by Our environment.

We can only act within the perameters of Our perspectives.

Together we can do anything.

There are levels to attend to
Body
Mind
Soul
Look after yourself so you may look after others.

My friends and I have casually been looking on the Internet at all manor of random information and sometimes knowledge since about 17/18yrs old.

Im 32 now and its only been in the last year that i became aware of a deeper level of Pedophilia than i once thought.

It was only since joining lots of groups on day 1 of LD did i soon learn about what Pizzagate is..
I watched down with the Cabal also.

I have no idea what these labels represent, but the information was like no "conspiracy theory".
More like a time line of events.. Or what appeared to be reference's to evidence.

I learned.

Its not about your local Pedos...

The problem is "They".

The unseen level of power that moves in Ignorance. (not caring whome or how they affect others)... To no end on the scale :(

People either choose or are forced to "sign up" maybe through a type of ritual...?

Maybe its called selling your soul..?

It might just be that anyone at that level who trys to expose it just gets wiped out.

One of the things they use Children for is to harvest a chemical that is released from the pineal gland of a terrified child below the age of eight. (electus of life)
The Chemical is called Adrenochrome.

Please forgive how blunt and graphic that is, i wish to only say it once.

I ask you,

given that there is no ghosts or goblins or witches or magical beasts..

And that the problem is simply a matter of Knowledge and Ignorance...
Plato,, Good and Evil..

What are the questions that need to be asked and answered?

I wish to be debunked.
I hope im just mad.”

Yes mate, you are mad.

My Father-in-Law has turned into one of these types, constantly posts rubbish on FB about it, out-there articles and youtube nonsense, now his brother does the same

He's become a ranter about anti-vaxxing, covid is a right wing conspiracy to control the masses, Plan 20, Plan 30, Bill Gates wants to sterilise the planet, etc.

He's never mentioned vaccinations directly to me, or he'd have gotten short shrift. He's twice, months apart, messaged my wife generally and hinted she should look into vaccination stuff, but nothing more (she's not interested in his crap either).

This is a guy who used to drive trains for a living and was reasonably normal, but has got into this carry on and now lives to spam FB with it :brickwall:crazy:

Just after lockdown I met a guy on Leith Links that I hadn’t seen for about 25 years. Had a pleasant chat until he mentioned he was a flat earther and tried to convince me using discarded rubbish lying in the park. I left at this point but it prompted me to watch the Netflix documentary. Mad hatters tea party plus some doesn’t begin to describe it.

Apparently there's a secret group of Stalinists on Hibs net made up of looney left wing Scottish Nationalists, Greens and the odd Labour Unionist. They meet during the hours of darkness and plot attacks on Hibs net members who are slightly right compared to Karl Marx with the aim of stifling all debate. It's become so bad that people are now worried that they're not allowed to make casual racist, homophobic or misogynist remarks without these expecting to have the right to disagree and express their alternative position. What's the world coming to when people can't freely express bigoted opinions without an organised bunch of do gooder virtue signaling snowflakes getting involved?

It’s the same Q for most conspiracies...just why would anyone go to the lengths that the conspiracy requires.

The flat earth one is a perfect example...to what end is the great globe conspiracy trying to achieve?

It’s all about what they’re hiding underneath.

I've never met a flat earther but my question would be is why is every other planet plus the sun and the moon spherical? Also what is the point of the conspiracy? Why would "they" want to fool us over this?

A lot of the flat earther stuff stems from extreme religious types.

I stupidly got into an argument with a guy who was an ultra orthodox Jew about it. He stated the scripture mentioned the Shamayim (firmament) and thus denying it's existence was to deny God.

I think a lot of anti science, anti establishment and other assorted oddballs have jumped on that bandwagon.

I actually tried to find the answer to this yesterday....flat earthers have their own Wiki and everything!

It does seem however that the reason for this globe conspiracy being a thing lacks any real detail. Quite a bit about how NASA are the real bad guys in this and how many people make so much money out of the globe approach.

But sadly there doesn’t really seem to be any cohesive reason put forward as to why the conspiracy of all conspiracies even exists....beyond NASA faking everything, ever.

I was rather disappointed as clearly the flat earthers have put lots of effort into coming up with some rather weird and wonderful stories to explain away everything else.

Ahh man you are just not getting it.

There is no such thing a gravity (another conspiracy I believe).

The centre is the ‘north’ pole

The ocean is contained by Antarctica which encircles the disk...keeping all the water on.

Or something like that...

Don’t even start to ask questions on whether the sun and the moon are globes or what the other planets are or what the stars are or if exo planets exist .

And defo don’t ask if space walks have ever happened (they are all fake..:done in underwater mock up’s....just like what the ISS is) as it will drive you mad that anyone, ever, can decide after reading all the crap that indeed NASA are just one big hoax, the Chinese have faked everything (check out the ‘proof’ of the bubbles videos!) the earth is after all flat!

The question I always ask is if I reach the 'edge', or Antarctica as we sphere earthers call it, why can't I just climb the ice wall and either hit the aforementioned firmament or fall off the edge? Given we have climbed almost every mountain on the planet I can't imagine no human has ever reached such an ice wall and said 'oh well that's the end of the line. Time to stop'.

I was impressed by a couple of the scientists accepting they had to shoulder some of the blame. Their acknowledgment that they have often spoken down to people, failed to make science accessible and created a vacuum that things like flat earth theory fills was laudable.

There was a lot of laughter during the Brexit campaign about the 'people are sick of experts' narrative but I think there was an uncomfortable truth it. Experts have to accept that not everyone is on their level and explaining things for the layman is a skill in itself.

Are you trying to use logic to debunk the flat earth theory? You fool [emoji23]

As it is my research suggest the answer to this is really quite straightforward:

NASA guards the ice wall so therefore no one is actually allowed to get to it and thus climb it to prove the firmament (yes that famous nefarious militarised outfit NASA again).

Thus the globe conspiracy is upheld, the bad guys win again and NASA continues to be at the centre of denying the world the truth of all truths....the earth is flat!!

The only reason Antartica is covered in ice is because that's where the US hides all alien spacecraft that visit earth.

They capture the spacecraft with their network of satellites, freeze them, then surround them with thousands of tonnes of ice.

The reason we're now experiencing melting of the ice caps is that some of the aliens on those spaceships have thawed out and started their engines, in a bid to escape.

As you can imagine, all those engines starting up produces a lot of heat, which both melts the ice and produces the temperature rise that some stupid scientist have attributed to 'global warming' (yet another hoax)

The interesting thing about conspiracies is that they are often rooted in something resembling a fact. I think they can often be an easy escape for those who are both lazy yet inventive; take a snippet of a wider story, remove the context and present it as something more than it is.

The myriad theories surrounding Bill Gates are a classic example. Gates did actually suggest vaccines were a means of population control. The context that is always omitted is that he doesn't suggest vaccines are used to kill children; he suggests that couples in parts of Asia and Africa often choose to have large families as they, tragically, expect to lose children to illness. Vaccination reduces the infant mortality rate in developing countries, put those 2 things together and you can see why vaccines may have an impact on the birth rate and thus population growth. I used the term lazy earlier and I stand by it, watching a 30 second clip from a TED talk that lasted significantly longer and not seeking further context is intellectually lazy. Likewise Gates did fund a study at MIT into 'invisible ink' that could be administered at the same time as a vaccine. This is probably were the 'micro chip' theory comes from. Again there has to be a context. Once again that context is rooted in the developing world where record keeping is often poor. The technology would be visible under infrared light for around 5 years and would contain only information about children's vaccinations. Poor record keeping leads to about 1.5M preventable deaths a year in the developing world so you can see why it's an idea being considered.

I think there is a huge amount of ego involved in conspiracy theories; it was referenced earlier in the thread, absolutely no doubt whatsoever that they are right. Little self critique or willingness to consider an alternative viewpoint.

People crave myth. Most prefer myth to the actual truth, especially when their fanaticism invoked.

I'm a fanatic about music and football and the mythological stories coming from within both is usually always more alluring than the fact. You have to consciously be critical looking at anything.

If we are subscribing to the idea that everyone's opinion should be heard then it's my opinion that people in a position of relative influence with an extensive reach on social media who ignore all the evidence in front of them to peddle conspiracy theories about covid being a hoax are dickheads.

Folk can have opinions that are wrong, and it should be ok to call that out as well. :agree:

If your opinion is that the earth is flat, then your opinion really doesn't hold any value whatsoever.

.

That's a subjective point of view though, whichever way you look at it it's an opinion which can be valid.

When it comes to science objectivity is required.

Can you have an opinion about a known fact?

Coffee contains caffeine*. This is a fact. To argue that it does not, is not an opinion, it is simply wrong and that view doesn't deserve any respect.

* Unless the caffeine is removed. Obvs.

Saying that the earth is flat is also not an opinion. It's just wrong.

I agree - but what happens is people state the incorrect fact and when challenged present it as their opinion. So their opinion is wrong.

I know I'm splitting hairs, and I know you agree, but that the earth is round or that 2+2=4 are not a matters of opinion.

Therefore, someone saying that "it's my opinion" that the earth is flat, is wrong on 2 counts.

I know. That doesn't stop them from telling you that they're entitled to their opinion (or from repeating that opinion, loudly and often).
