John Hume has died, aged 83. A great man, whose role in paving the way to the peace process in Northern Ireland was crucial. His unswerving commitment to non-violence, his anti-sectarianism, and his pleas for calm dialogue during the mayhem of The Troubles, stood out amidst the chaos and division. A great legacy for anyone to leave behind. :not worth

It's a shame his party has lost so much ground to Sinn Fein. I always respected them for rejecting violence and attempting to find the middle ground.

Very sad news. Someone who was deserving of the honours bestowed upon him.

Instrumental in coaxing Sinn Fein to the negotiating table in the 80s. He recognised everyone needed to be involved for peace to be achieved.

RIP.

Sad news. This man was a politician of real substance on an island where it is in vogue to be passionately extreme and he managed to be extremely passionate.

His greatest achievement was getting the UK government to abandon its policy of not talking to terrorists.

How can you ever reach a peaceful settlement if you won’t speak to the other side.

A man dedicated to peace who persuaded people to want to live for their ideals rather than die for them. RIP.
