View Full Version : Clowns and the 'Glorious Twelfth' during lockdown

They just can't help themselves. There might not be any parades, due to lockdown, so the knuckle dragger next door but one (yes, a Jambo) is covering his back fence in flags. So far we have Union flag - no problem there; but wait, we have a defunct red hand Northern Ireland flag. Perhaps he's just behind the times, though he isn't from Northern Ireland, so let's give him the benefit of the doubt. However, he isn't finished. What's this? Next up is a King Billy on white horse flag. Hmmm, where is this going, one wonders. Well, next he surpasses himself with the flag of the Orange Order. What will be next up, the flag of the UVF perhaps?
He knows exactly what he's doing, the baldy ****. I never speak to the guy, precisely because he is an ignorant welt, and I'm sure he knows I will have to see his display. He must be pushing sixty; imagine going through life like that. He isn't right in the head. I refuse to be dragged into the gutter by his ilk, so I've closed the curtains in the back bedroom and shall continue to ignore the sad little man.

The only reason a bunch of adult males parade through towns wearing fancy dress is because they want people to look at them and be wound up by them. A classic example of a superiority complex put on public display.
Don't give the bellend next door the satisfaction of rising to the bait. It's pathetic and people with such a mentality are really to be pitied. They aren't representative of any Protestants I have ever called friends over the years. A sad club for misfits and oddballs. The only thing worse is people who aren't even in the club but play along with the charade.

Spot on. He knows ourselves and next door are Hibs families; he wants a reaction. The thing that really annoys me is next door have kids. What kind of pathetic individual would act like that?

I really can't understand how in Scotland in the year 2020 that kind of behaviour can be deemed legal. It's obviously only there as provocation and in the hope of getting attention. I don't think I could have shown the restraint you have and I'm Protestant if only on paper.

It's in his own garden, not a public place, so I suppose he can do as he pleases. None of the flags are illegal, after all. Just sad to see and certainly not representative of most Jambos and Protestants I know. This guy is a fud who likes to be staunch. He's never done it before, but lockdown has deprived him of watching the walks and celebrating his 'culture'.
By the way, I don't know what the OO flag as about, as I'm sure he isn't a member.

I saw a bit of it today, roasters putting flags out. I don’t why but my village seems to have a lot of flags on display - not just at this time of year either.
Anyway, I’m ignoring it altogether as their will be no walks to disturb my peace this year.

As the airports aren't very busy couldn't they just designate a couple of runways and let the trumpets march up and down all day?
There might be the odd plane still landing but if they keep looking skywards and don't twirl their cheer leaders sticks too high it should be fine.
These marches are vital, how else are the vast majority of younger generations going to learn how to avoid making bellends of themselves in the future if they don't get to see how tragic hateful old men in bowler hats marching up and down look like?

I'm really am shocked that we've leaders of a nation saying that it's okay to celebrate the victory of the Protestant William of Orange over the Catholic King James II.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-53376468
Of course that's going to fan the flames of hatred and resentment in the Catholic community. It's akin to us wanting to celebrate Bannockburn every year and to have parades in each town and village.
Surely, our leaders should be standing up and say "it's now in the past, we shouldn't be celebrating such battles" that create such division between the Catholics and Protestants.
The world has changed massively in it's view to racism and homophobia, but not religion.

The irony is that a lot of people parading about and singing the songs will be from the Presbyterian tradition. It's debated whether William III was a Presbyterian in terms of theology, he was certainly schooled in and devoted to Calvinism. However societally and structurally he was very much an Espisopalian. The Revolution Church ignored the Covenants, those who had persecuted and even killed the Covenanters were readmitted as Ministers and Elders, the Monarch had the power to intervene in or postpone General Assemblies and of course William III declared himself head of the Church in England and Ireland. That broke the Covenant and the Solemn League agreement.
We tend to view sectarianism as a Catholic v Protestant issue, for much of the formative years and beyond of the Calvinist Church in Scotland it was far more likely to be a Protestant v different kind of Protestant issue.

Occasionally people over here, or when I lived in NZ, would ask me what it's all about. The one or two times I tried explaining it, I realised how utterly pathetic it sounds so I don't bother any more. Nobody outside of that tiny corner of the globe even cares about it, even the ones with Irish or Scots ancestry.

I think it was comedian Joe Heenan who tweeted on the 12th (words to the affect of) “Somewhere there is a fat guy dressed up in an Orangeman outfit banging a big drum marching on a treadmill”.
It made me laugh.
I always thought that people should line the streets of an Orange walk and just laugh and point. That would soon put a stop to it.

I heard about a German town recently that turned a far-right march into a sponsored walk. The town turned out in numbers to cheer them on, with the proceeds going to refugee charities. The nazi's were not happy about it!

Nearly right, here's the short version of the story.
https://youtu.be/KvjIYl_Nlao
Even better was an action a couple of years before, when the same organisation turned up at a neo nazi music event and were giving out free t-shirts, the t-shirts changed after 1 wash and had a message on them telling the owners how to get help if they wanted to leave the nazi scene.
