I'm looking at upgrading our soundbar

We currently have the LG soundbar with subwoofer... Can't remeber the model but its a few years old and cost about
£250

We have an LG Oled C9 telly but we are not fussed what brand the new soundbar would be - unless we somehow get significantly better functionality via an LG soundbar

Any recommendations?

We will be wall mounting our TV so it's the ideal chance to upgrade (atleast, that's what I'm telling my wife [emoji23])

I know Sonos get a great rep, are they worth it? I see the new Sonos Arc looks pretty impressive

I got the Samsung Q90R when Samsung were doing the £400 cashback when buying with a qualifying Samsung TV, it blows your socks off, literally. My mate has the Playbar and it blows it out the water.

Can't see it with just the soundbar

Head to Richer Sounds in the town and get a few demo's. You'll get more bang for your buck than sonos IMO.

Edit: or the NZ equivalent of Richer Sounds

It comes with a sub and 2 wireless satellite speakers, Dolby Atmos capable.

I looked at the older sonos originally and they were actually pretty bulky, the arc appears more streamlined - big money though

Down £500 here https://www.cramptonandmoore.co.uk/samsung-hw-q90r-harman-kardon-cinematic-soundbar-with-dolby-atmos-and-dts-x.html

I believe it's the same price on the official Samsung site and there's also options to get Richer Sounds to pricematch for a longer warranty.

Did a decent upgrade to my system in 2018 when I got a new living room TV (also wall mounted):

Marantz NR1608 Dolby Atmos Receiver
4 x Dali Pico Speakers as front and rear surrounds
2 x Dali Alteco C1 Upfiring Speakers
1 x Dali Zensor Vokal Centre Speaker
1 x Dali E-9F Subwoofer

Dali (Danish Audiophile Loudspeaker Industries) have been around since the 80s but only really gained UK recognition in the last decade or so. Great value for money IMHO and work very well in the above 7.1 surround setup.

I’ve since added a Philips Hue Sync Box which, when coupled with my light strips and Hue light bars, delivers a truly immersive home cinema experience, or so I like to think!

Sonos are good and you can build the system up in pieces but one thing that’s getting users annoyed is the way that if you end up with a mix of Gen1 and Gen 2 you only get Gen1 functionality.

As nobody is going to replace their whole system it means you end up getting less functionality from new elements you purchase.

Is anyone considering selling their old soundbar system?

I quite fancy one but could never justify the cost new to Mrs Jackie.

I've got a denon avrx 2600 with Jbl control one from speakers, jbl control centre, Cambridge audio minx rear and yamaha sub woofer. Sounds brilliant.

I've just set up my wee man cave with denon avrx520, sony front and centre speakers, jamo rear ones and a yamaha sub. The sound is epic in the wee room now [emoji16]

All joking aside, my neighbour (terraced) told me that since I created a home cinema sound system (Sony receiver & wired speakers) in my living room, he doesn't hear my TV at all compared to when I had TV speakers only.
My unqualified opinion is the surround sound is so much clearer so I don't need as much volume, that and the fact the speakers in the thin, modern TV panels, just don't have the depth of sound so you compensate by ramping up the volume.
I rarely use my subwoofer though as my crossover frequency is set quite low and I don't feel neither the need for it nor am I missing out.
In my backroom, I installed a Sony soundbar (HTZF9) with sub-woofer and wireless surrounds, the soundbar on its own is outstanding but cost more than my TV (the wife does not know this yet!) but with the additional surround sound you get a pseudo vertical 3D sound that is great with sports and movies.
Some people just don't get the experience that soundbars and home cinema can bring, but with the excellent audio channels available with live and streamed TV (5.1 up to 9.2.6, DTS,ATMOS etc) that I feel to not upgrade from standard stereo is like going to the cinema and watching an HD movie in monochrome through fogged up glasses!

Must say the sub was the last bit of my kit that I purchased and it has taken a bit of getting used to in terms of tweaking just to ensure the bass is not overpowering. I’m also in a new build second floor flat (poor neighbours, although I’ve WhatsApped them all in the past and said just to let me know if things are out of hand, and no complaints so far thankfully!) I think what you might say about overall value is probably true.

I had this with my receiver/amp, I played around with the audio settings on my Blu-ray and my receiver and the audio is generally ok.
I think for movies, I only use DTS these days,,, will have to check.
