G'day,. Always been a golf watcher rather than player. I've played a little but much younger. I've decided after much consideration to take it up.

I'm looking for advice on what to buy club wise; style brand and price and where to shop. Really any advice. I don't want to spend a fortune but I'm happy to spend enough to make it enjoyable even when I'm Tom kite.

Cheers

There's a couple of really good Callaway package sets available at the moment. Google Callaway Warbird set or Callaway X2 Hot set. Both really decent options for beginners as they are quite forgiving.

If they are a bit outside your budget then take a look at the likes of American Golf, they usually have a few offers for complete packages available.

You won’t go wrong with the ones mentioned above. Also google some of the golf magazines reviews for higher handicap irons for more ideas.

But to be honest there is nothing wrong either in picking up a half decent second hand set.

Allows you to get going at a much reduced cost.

If and when you pick up the playing bug then you can always upgrade then.

A couple of lessons to get you off on the right track may well prove to be a better investment than shiny new sticks at this stage I’d suggest!

In the same boat as OP and I’ve been looking on gumtree basically incase I don’t catch the bug I’ve not given the funds a beating in the process, some decent deals going also some very old and tatty looking things but can pick a set between £60-£100

Or just go crazy and buy 700 clubs in one go!

I also get discount at AG via my job so that's a decent shout. All I really need at this time is something that'll get me started. As I said, it needs to be enough that it's not earth shatteringly expensive but good enough that as I progress I'm not needing to up grade 6 months or so later. I'm the kind of person who sticks stuff, so I'm not worried about paying a bit out to start.

Also if I can get decent second half set then I'm open to that also. Someone told me AG do second half deals instore only so I'll go up today and look.

I was in a strange position that two weeks before i left for ireland i bought a new set of ping i3 irons. Then i found out i was moving to Dublin and didn’t get them back out till last year! So my clubs are brand new but 16 years old :-)

I just got a ping G30 driver on ebay for 110 quid (4 years old but still way more technologically advanced to what i have)

Those deals sound great but i’d also look for the same clubs second hand. You might get a great discount. If you get back into it get better ones as you go.

Hundreds of clubs for every budget here. It’s in the Bilston Glen industrial Estate up near Straiton.

I wouldn't buy new stuff if I was just starting out. Any cast (stay away from forged) set of irons from a half decent brand will do. As for woods, if I'm honest, the newer the club wont make that much difference. I play with titleist that are 10 year old and they're fine. Bag and trolley...much better value second hand.

One thing to do is buy a set of grips and learn to regrip your clubs. It's a piece of cake, makes your clubs like new and extremely satisfying. You dont have to spend that much on grips either, as you can get all the grips and the tape you need for about £35. Seems daunting but its worth it.
