Bored just now so I’ve been researching my house, it was built in 1885.
The fist occupant was a John Frew and he was a ‘mile thorn’ according to the census.
Can anyone shed any light on what that might be?

Are you sure that’s correct and not a mistake from the original handwriting of the census?

Possibly could be. The census has been typed up at some point.

There's a Mile Thorn Street in Halifax. If you could find out the origin of that.

Hmmm, some kind of sign writer perhaps.
When I lived in Walthamstow, London they put blue "plaques" in the windows of some of a few streets from a census with the names and occupations, was really fascinating

Frew is my surname and John Frew was actually my father's name. The family generally comes from Musselburgh and other parts of East Lothian.
One explanation for a mile thorn I read is that it's a thorn tree marking the distance of a mile, which seems to make sense in another context.
I've just contacted my friendly Frew family historian in Montreal to see if he can shed any light.
