Apparently England played West Germany in the final. Really looking forward to this. Don't tell me the result!

They wouldn’t have won it, if they were playing the whole of Germany

So glad it’s on. Just like all the classic Scottish games on a Saturday night with Gary Big Lugs telling the nation how good Scottish football used to be. In fact I think STV have also got in as well.

I hope they're planning to show all our wins from World Cup finals group games.

It's shouldn't take them long.

Off the top off my head: Zaire, Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden.

Just shows you how Tom Kite we really have been over the years as an international team. So so sad.

If we had hosted a World Cup back in the 70s or 80s and played every game at Hampden. We could have won it 😉😃

Just put a bet on. Normally I wouldn't bet against England out of principle, but I just fancy the Germans for this one.

For those who were watching football in the mid 60’s, what was the general feeling towards the English national side at the time and in that final in particular? We often hear how football changed in the 70’s, with terraces becoming more violent and rivalries becoming deeper rooted, so wondered if Scots would have firmly be rooting for West Germany or would have been hoping England would win the final?
Know what the answer would be nowadays, but was the attitude different in the midst of the swinging sixties?

Before my time, but I know my Grandad was supporting West Germany.

The same West Germany that, with help from their pre-DDR friends, had nearly killed him more than once in the war. Was he a mental Nat? Not a bit of it. He'd no time for the SNP and 13 years later voted "no" to devolution.

He just didn't want his nearest rivals to be world champions.

If anything the ABE thing was very much stronger at that time. We more or less judged where we stood in the game by our results in the home internationals against England. We had some great game against Ireland and Wales but those results never seemed to matter so much.
So much so, I realise it was 20 years later but I firmly believe that the banning of home internationals was more to do with politics and stemming the tide of Scottish Nationalism than any perceived upsurge in violence. There was more trouble reported at the average English League match than any of the home internationals.

Well done to England for winning it, they had a tremendous team back then and they fully deserved to win it.

Russian interference in this one.

One rule for poison attacks, another for Geoff Hurst attacks

Double standards!

They had a decent team back then and were allowed to play all of their games at Wembley.
Scotland beat them comprehensively the following year at Wembley.

Uruguay France was at White City because the Wembley owner refused to cancel the dogs.

I remember watching that game when it came with one of the papers years ago. Jack Charlton gets injured early on but there are no subs so he hobbles about up to for about 70 minutes. Was very strange to see.

We were good but it was made easier by the rules back then.

Funnily enough we had beaten them a couple of years earlier when we played most of the game with 10 men.Eric Caldow broke his leg,Davy Wilson went to left back and Jim Baxter had his best game for Scotland.

Forever synonymous with Kenneth Wolstenholme's commentary.

"Some people are on the pitch...every West German player has been assaulted".
