It seems that public figures are becoming ever more emboldened in the amount of ***** they think the public will swallow. So, in a crowded field, what's your favourite?

Personally, I think Prince Andrew edges it. Brazen, utterly unbelievable, trying to cover up something truly repugnant and obviously so chuffed with himself afterwards.

The two Russian spies. I can still remember the deadpan interview, it was clear both of them knew they were totally invulnerable to British justice and they and the Russian tv producer were blatantly taking the piss.

I think a place has to be made for Alex Ferguson’s diarrhoea excuse for dangerous driving on the motorway. Especially as the judge found in his favour.

I'd totally forgotten about that one.

I thought about an Ann Budge "it's for the good of Scottish football" but you've got to draw the line of frankly ridiculous somewhere.

Wasn't there some Tory who tried to explain his £100,000 expense payment by saying he had to have his shrubs guarded against rabbits?

The Russian spies have been mentioned but that was brilliant. The whole spiel about Salisbury Cathedral and the spire. Better still was some people actually wanted to give Russia the benefit of the doubt about the whole thing.

It's not really an excuse as such but Berlusconi explaining away his associations with an underage girl by declaring 'it's better than being gay' takes some beating.

Not politics but Winona Ryder claiming her shoplifting was research for an upcoming role. Chris Langham made similar claims when caught with child pornography and even contacted the police himself to report 'spam emails'.
