Don't get a lot of time to watch 'grown-up' television thanks to the kids being at home all the time and the TV often commandeered by the Xbox but I try to grab an hour or so before bed to watch something diverting.

Recent discoveries have been Succession and a really quirky series called Horace and Pete.

Were in the same boat, we only get a couple of hours TV a night, the last two series that I have really enjoyed is Narcos and Ozark, both are really great viewing, also there is a thread on the dug out which has loads of good recommendations

Off the top of my head - Narcos, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Schitt’s Creek, Chernobyl, Inside No 9, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Veep, Parks and Rec, Firefly, Stranger Things, Arrested Development.

I think most, if not all, are available on Netflix, Sky or Amazon Prime. Inside No 9 will probably be available on iPlayer too.

Curb Your Enthusiasm always pretty reliable. Very noticeable how Seinfeld declined once Larry David stopped co-writing it.

Sopranos? I get the accolades for the quality of the performances but it wasn't for me. I was really labouring through it long before the end. Hardly a surprise that a Mafia-themed series would include a lot of hideous violence but I think it's something I would probably have enjoyed more when I was quite a lot younger, perhaps before having kids (something I have realised has had an impact on what I am comfortable watching!).

That is an interesting perspective.

For me, it was a mix of the violence but a bigger emphasis on family - both the mob family and the direct family, and how relationships develop, break down and the pain and loss involved in all that.

Yep, I mostly agree with that and I thought Edie Falco in particular as Carmela was superb. I just started to find that despite the way the dual family angle was so acutely observed the murderous violence which had by necessity to accompany it become too gruelling.

That’s true. The original premise was very family, almost Hamlet, and as the series went on, it needed the violence to sustain it. But then Hamlet ends violently I guess :greengrin

The Last Dance....wow I’m finding this totally riveting!

It’s amazing how much footage there is from back then, US TV companies must have had effective access all areas for ever.

The insights though on what he used to drive him to his success is the most fascinating thing. You sometimes assume great players are great because of their talent but wow does this not remind you of just how mentally strong the real winners that stay at the top are.

I love how they move along the timeline and the mix of his interviews and his opponents with the games.

Then you get treated to some of his phenomenal talent, his skills were just mind blowing.

All in all a great watch!

:agree: Always so much better when a programme like that has access to plenty of archive footage. There are a lot of documentary/investigative programmes which deal with very interesting subjects but are weakened by over-reliance on the limited footage they possess.

Good point. It almost certainly showed how counselling works, doesn’t work, is basically an exchange between two humans that can be really productive and sometimes not very good at all.

Well after watching it I’m surprised that Scottie is surprised that Jordan controlled the editing. Quite clearly Jordan is not one to cede control to anyone!

I thought Pippen received plenty of praise in the series but his comment about ‘not sure if he would change anything’ about the moment where he refused to play to try and save the series when Kukoc hits the last second winner said a lot about him.

Think I read that the Thick of It creators wrote Succession which is apparently loosely based around the Murdoch dynasty. Have watched the first few episodes and starting to warm to it. I've heard good things about Veep.

It is very slow to start with. It took me a while, maybe 4 or 5 episodes. In hindsight, it's like the first 50 pages of a book where they're establishing the characters.

Shades of a modern day Dallas or Dynasty (for those who remember 80s TV!) but I'm going to stick with it for now.

Just finished it yesterday. Wasn’t a massive basketball fan, but mates of mine were so I knew all about the Bulls of the 90s, Jordan, Pippen, Rodman and the likes. Quite like how Jordan spanned the decades, from playing with greats like Larry Bird, to being team mates with Steve Kerr (who is starting his own Golden Warrior dynasty in Oakland).

A brilliant well crafted Sports documentary. Well worth a watch.

Couldn’t hack Little Fires...binned it after Ep. 3 which was more like watching a 90’s American Teen coming of age movie than anything else.

The ridiculous co-incidence about the baby (about the only thing to happen in the three episodes) was the final straw.

In other words, while I can see why some might really like it, I thought it was a load o bollox!

Googled the winners since the Bulls started their re-structuring and saw that Steve Kerr has indeed been outstanding as a coach.

I really liked the way he came across in the series, really humble. All the more so considering his coaching success since...he didn’t allude to that even once.

Mindhunter is on the list, just clearing off a load of stuff on the Q Box, probably the third series of True Detective next as that has been sitting there for a while. Also a series, that I would need to check the name of, but essentially a police procedural about a local detective in Baghdad while coalition forces are there. It seemed to get good reviews.

Just finished this a couple of days ago, and I thought it was fantastic.

You really get into the bowels of what drives Jordan through the years. He would pick up an off the cuff comment by an opponent, and use it to drive him to succeed the next time they met.

A small part I noticed on the cinematography was when he was going onto court, and the pictures slowed to watch him cross the white line. He was then a machine against men.

Simply phenomenal.

I've almost reached the end of Succession's second season and there's a Hibs storyline in there! The Brian Cox character (like the actor himself) is originally from Dundee despite spending most of his life in the States and for a present one of his sons (who knows nothing about football) buys him Hearts FC, mistakenly believing that was his dad's team when he was growing up in Scotland. When he announces this, his dad looks at him with incredulity and says: "I'm Hibs!"

On reflection, his son has maybe done him a favour as he could presumably then fulfil a Hibby fantasy and close down the yams. Might be wrong but I vaguely recall Irvine Welsh planning something similar.
