So following on from my story about mice getting in the flat, we’ve not discovered a new issue...

We’ve got an air vent in our living room. After hearing noises coming from it we’ve done a bit of investigating and it’s home to a birds nest. With little tiny ones in it. And a mum who comes back and feeds them.

I appreciate that there’s a lot going on in the world just now. I’ve left a message with a number provided by RSPCB (I think it was them?!) but we’ve not heard anything back.

Am I right in thinking that there’s not a lot we can do just now? I think it’s illegal to move a birds nest until they’ve flown it. If that makes sense.

Anyway, mice in the floorboards, a birds nest in a wall. If al l else dials, I think we’re going to open a zoo when this is done.

Do you live in Halmyre Street?

Had a couple of episodes where they were nesting in the loft space, the scratching around was a pain but once I checked they'd flown the nest I just put a bit of small guage plastic netting over the hole they were getting in and problems vanished.

If you look for the adult birds you will be able to identify whay type they are. Once you know that, check Google to see how long it takes for them to fly the nest. Will give you an idea if how long you need to put up with it and/or before you can do anything about it.

If you're in a flat and can't get to the outside of the vent, you could try cutting a 2l bottle and shoving the base into the hole from the inside.

Seagulls make a phenomenal and maddening racket from the early hours and they can be scarily aggressive when they think you're gettting anywhere near their nests. Thankfully they seem to be a lot less prevalent in our neighbourhood this year.
