I think there is a player at the game. In Hibs gear. Patrick McPartlin put a pic on twitter....and ive no idea who he is. Maybe its Stephen McGinn.....

He cannae be a football player. There are no tattoos on show.

Different position?

Stephen Mcginn is a midfielder, Jackson is a defender.

In a normal world I’d be questioning the signing of someone like Stephen Mcginn, the way things are, bringing in a steady SPFL player that knows the league and can be relied on as a squad player and likely to be pretty cheap makes complete sense to me.

Clearly wouldn’t be classed as a particularly exciting signing though.
A bit like Paul McGinn and he’s turned out no bad . Need to trust the gaffer.

Stephen McGinn is a very neat and tidy footballer. He knows the league and if cheap would be a good addition to the squad. St Mirren fans liked him.
Also was there captain and player of the year

I think we need another tackling type midfielder in soon, we look light in this area on numbers

Hope there are going to be a few bodies brought in. With Jackson gone , had a look at the squad and we can put out a decent first 11 but dont fancy the subs much , particularly a few of the old guard who a regularly injured. Once we get a few injuries and suspensions , and we have a congested calendar , its going to be a tough season. Get some cheap squad fillers and we can forget about pushing for third with this squad. Mid table at best.

Defo. Makes sense, and hopefully it would be on a permanent deal. Can play in Midfield and in defence in a couple positions. Hopefully Ross let Ron pump him at golf the other day to help provide some extra £££ to get some more players in 😂

It’s not all of a sudden. It’s been the case since we lost 4 midfielders (that I can think of atm) and replaced them with one!

We defo need more in midfield

I don't think it's sudden. We lost Omeonga, Docherty, Slivka and Whittaker in that position, only bringing in one replacement. We still need another and have done since the start IMO.

Drey Wright, Mallan, and Boyle fit into outside right/left and central midfield. We'll add a defensive midfielder as cover for Gogic. The fact Stephen McGinn is still here and travelling with the squad tells it's own story too.

So far our signings from Dunfermline (mid Championship), Hamilton Accies (lower Premiership) and St Johnstone have made a significant contribution to seeing us top of the league and us looking more balanced :aok: I'll go with Jack's judgement as it's working well :agree:

Did anyone really expect Paul McGinn to be as good as he has been?

If Stephen McGinn comes in to be backup then he'll command a much lower wage than Slivka or Whittaker. It gives us options at DM whilst allowing the little cash we have to be used for another player or contract extention for key players.

I thought the story was that Stephen McGinn was training with us as a courtesy without any prospect of signing? What with Paul being a current player and John being a legend that seems fairly reasonable. If he's Championship bound it might be a while before he gets signed by anyone.

You have no idea of the wage Whittaker, Slivka or Stephen Mcginn were/would earn.

Paul Mcginn is younger, better and could actually get in st mirrens team.

If his brother's weren't good players this would not be looked on at all favourably. We can and should be doing better than this.

Surely we won’t sign Stephen McGinn, he’s been training with us from the off and surely if we had any intention it would have been done nearer the start.

McCrorie will sign on loan and cover right back/centre back and centre mid
Another pacey attacking player capable of playing wide or up top will come in

Tonight at 1-0 looking at the bench the options were very limited.

Was thinking about that earlier.

I don’t think either of them could really be relied on. Whittaker could have his excellent games but he also had it in his locker to be pretty *****.

Slivka was always just meh, never really brilliant but more regularly anonymous.

If I was a manager I don’t think i could feel I could really rely on them. He’ll know Stephen Mcginn better than we do and if he thinks he can get more out of Mcginn than those two for presumably less money then I think it makes complete sense.

In all seriousness, the two brothers we've had brought us incredible work ethic, a winning attitude and real consistency. Stephen is an experienced pro with a good attitude who has had plenty of good games for fairly poor St Mirren teams. I'd see absolutely no issue in bringing him in as cover.

My issue is over the course of the season we will very rarely have a full strength team, we will often have one or two missing with injuries.

Bar Allan tonight and maybe at a push Gullan, I don’t see anyone on that bench that I’d be confident coming on to change a game in our favour or that the opposition would fear. Gray, McGregor, Stevenson and Hallberg are all good options for shoring up a game though. Don’t rate Murray and have yet to see him influence a game.

I also think we’re only an injury or two away to key personnel, I.e Gogic Or Porteous to really suffering and reverting to last season.

This is a massive season for us and we’ve started brilliantly, I’d hate to see us miss out on 3rd due to squad depth/quality.

Tbh id say Aberdeen have a stronger squad on paper and squad depth albeit they’ve spent a fortune over the years. I really like what Ross is doing with our squad hence why I want us to allow him to further strengthen it

I dunno, I think paying someone off 6 months after signing is a pretty good sign it was a failure. I actually liked stokes in his 3rd spell. Was a period where he was the only one creating and scoring for us but it really didn't work out.

Injuries, you'll find it hard to get many appearances if you're injured.

Whilst it’s a signing I would also have some doubts about, do you not think those “red flags” might be less significant following an extended period training with the club?

Jack Ross has had a chance to scrutinise him in the company of our current first team squad, so if he signs then a man I trust to be very competent has based a decision on what he’s seen over a long period and with his own eyes.

“So many red flags” might apply to McGinn if he were signed out of the blue a few minutes before the transfer window closed to fill a gaping hole in our squad. That’s not really the case here. If we sign him, it’s because he’s impressed.

Maybe that is true, difference way of looking at it. Wouldn't he have impressed st mirren on and off the park enough to win a deal, though? Is a 31 year old coming off the back of a rough season of injuries a risk we should be taking right now? Gogic was signed after about 2 weeks of training with us, why would Mcginn still not be signed after 2 months?

I think these are questions worth asking. I wonder what the reaction to this would be if his brother's weren't such good players or we hadn't won 3 games running. Seriously, on paper, in my opinion, this would be a poor move.

Only fact is that he’s not even signed yet and you’ve already written him off.

Classy

That's not the only fact though, is it?

I've not written him off. I really just don't think he's a good player and we could do better. If he signs he would get my fullest support, like everyone else.

You’ve posted about 12 times in the last two pages that he’s not good enough. If that’s not writing him off I’m not sure what is.

JR and the coaching staff will have seen him throughout pre season to be able to make a qualified decision. Good enough for me, considering if he does come in it will be on a low wage and as back up.

Thinking someone isn't good enough isn't writing them off imo. I don't think certain members of the current squad are good enough but I very much hope they can show I'm wrong and with the right role and manager they definitely could do that.

Stephen Mcginn could do that too. Doesn't mean I should be tugging one off at the potential of signing him. I've never seen much from him to suggest he could contribute much for us.
Never really understood the signing as a back up thing. Should be looking at guys who are coming to take a spot, not fill one.

Maybe that is true, difference way of looking at it. Wouldn't he have impressed st mirren on and off the park enough to win a deal, though? I agree that they’re questions worth asking.

St Mirren will have their own unique situation to deal with - maybe he wasn’t what they needed at that time and they felt they could use that wage better strengthening elsewhere? Sometimes players can be surplus to requirements at a smaller club but needed at a bigger one, just because of differing circumstances.

Re the time training with the squad - maybe Ross shared your/ our concerns and wanted to watch him for longer to make sure it wasn’t just a flukey couple of impressive weeks at the start ie he had more to do to win Ross over - just because of the very reasons you have highlighted.

The things that are facts I present as facts. It's not my opinion that st mirren released him.

I suppose you could say, in the opinion of the St. Mirren manager, he was surplus to requirements so they released him - that's a fact.

If Hibs sign him, then in the opinion of Jack Ross, he can do a job for Hibs - that's a fact

So at the end of the day, it's all about opinions (and facts).

Absolutely no one is at danger of tugging one off over his signing. Infact the only one on their high horse about it is yourself and he’s not even signed yet. Jeez

People are discussing the merits of a potential signing. Only one person has taken it off topic with personal comments and it isn't me. There is no arguing going on.

I dunno, I think paying someone off 6 months after signing is a pretty good sign it was a failure. I actually liked stokes in his 3rd spell. Was a period where he was the only one creating and scoring for us but it really didn't work out.

Yeah, seems he had 2 long spells out with knee injuries. Don't really see that as better than not getting picked right enough. I struggle to see why St mirren would have released him if he had something to offer.

His contract ran it's course, not quite released, possibly due to his injuries last season. Also they have a new manager who has his own views on what players he'll want.

Bogdan (loan)
Naismith (loan)
Jackson (fee received)
Slivka
Docherty (loan)
Whittaker
Omeonga (loan)
McNulty (loan)
Kamberi (fee received)

We have signed

Nisbet (fee paid)
Wright
Gogic

We will probably be getting rid of James

You could certainly be right about that. Still concerns me that I don't think he is a particular good player and no one else seems to have any interest in him despite him being free for months now. It's not as if he was really tearing it up for st mirren in this league at any point. 3 years ago he couldn't get a game for Wycombe and had to drop to then bottom of the championship st mirren.

That all being said, I think this year's Scottish premier League is as poor as it has ever been. He may be able to offer something but I doubt he'd get much game time if any. Hallberg, Mallan, Gogic, Allan and Newall will all be well ahead of him

I doubt he is reading the forum mate. If you are Stephen I'm sorry.

Hibs had 4/5 guys on the bench tonight who will be expensive.

The young guys should be options of we have 4/5 players out injured, not a 31 year old.

Naturally I'd rather get a permanent signing in who can actually play against every team but if it's mccrorie so be it.

I still don't think it's another kicker we need. It's someone who can keep the ball and move it around.

It’s not about kicking people, it’s about making sure other teams can’t waltz through our midfield like they did last season without us putting some sort of contact on them.

Oh, I definitely agree. The issue I have is you can't really play 2 guys like that. One gogic and another, more dynamic player like Mcgeouch or Fyvie who can not only tackle but move it around, keep it etc.

Keeping the ball better would reduce the pressure on the back 4 much more than another defensive midfielder.

Still doesn’t make sense to me.

Why would he be with the match day squad in full Hibs training gear if it was just a case of him training with us?

If anything it would hamper his chances of getting a deal else where if it looks like he’s going to be signing for us.

Was he with the other players in the match day squad then as well?

If you throw in the fact it’s meant to be a closed doors environment with only essential attendees only it just doesn’t make sense to me.

Who said it about Paul? He was first choice for a premier League side. Stephen is a free agent who couldn't get a game. Large difference.

Yogi knew Paddy Cregg and Daryl Duffy. Lennon knew Stokes, Calderwood knew Junior Agogo. I'll be honest, it's not enough for me.

Stephen was the St Mirren captain and only never played when injured. Sure he played south of border for a while and remember him nullifying SJM at ER a couple of seasons ago. Will be a good signing as cover if it happens

I’ve got a feeling we will go for McCrorie as he can play CM and CB.

Annoying Omeonga/ Docherty aren’t coming back as I think they would thrive with Gogic sitting in front.

We really aren’t far from being a decent team and a couple decent signings and a smaller tighter squad could see us finish top 4.

Think we’re still good 2-3 players from consistently being a good team. We were pretty woeful last night and a better team would have taken a goal of us or Shankland. Still terrific we grounded out an ugly win something we’ve never been good at. Would love to see another defender and midfielder. Mcrorie would fill both positions. James still likely to move on so another wage freed.

I don’t think we where woeful it wasn’t the best performance but 2nd half we where the better team, although Utd had a decent amount of the ball I can’t remember rocky making a save? Don’t know how Shankland would have changed the fact they created no clear cut chances?

I think the squad last year was too big but seems better balanced now.

But if we lose Boyle he will need replaced - We need 3 wingers minimum to mix it up.

We have lost quite a few faces and say Gogic or a CB are injured - we need players to step in.

If Stephen McGinn comes in to be backup then he'll command a much lower wage than Slivka or Whittaker. It gives us options at DM whilst allowing the little cash we have to be used for another player or contract extention for key players.Dont start this talking sense stuff agree with every word

Paul Mcginn is younger, better and could actually get in st mirrens team.

If his brother's weren't good players this would not be looked on at all favourably. We can and should be doing better than this. They are 29 and 31 not much difference. Paul was not fancied at st mirren we got him as cover and he has grabbed the position.
Whittaker is 36 now , ive no idea why Stephen is still at the club but if its waiting to sign we get very experienced player rated better than paul most of his career , that tuned out ok

How many saves did Rocky have to make? Utd did a great job of stoping us playing but werent able to trouble us very often. So I'm not sure how that can be woeful. A defender will come in for sure with Jackson leaving, but our current back 4 is doing nothing wrong to suggest it needs more added.

Woeful is harsh. Not free flowing but Utd weren’t exactly up to much either.

We also had players missing so it’s and buts.

James needs to move on soon - been here so long picking up a wage and not doing anything !!

I actually wonder whether we could see Lewis Stevenson play CM - he can tackle / pass.

The Boyle situation is going to drag on to near end of window I imagine - ideally needs to declare if he’s staying or just weighing up options - he kind of looks like he’s playing but his mind is elsewhere and was being wary of his legs / any challenges coming in.

They don't seem to realise they're a Scottish Championship side in the middle of a global pandemic. It's not even close to being like it was the last time they were down there. No derby, no Rangers, no TV, no money, ziltch, nada. They're in a footballing backwater having to compete with the English leagues restarting. They need to get real about the players they'll be signing. It is the worst time to be relegated in the history of Scottish football.

I occasionally go on their forum to see if there’s any rumours of Doc coming back etc and the valuations they expect for players are mental.

Doc, Jones, McCrorie, Stewart, Murphy and all the other players out the picture are worth 1-2 million supposedly

They think they're getting 10 million for Kamara. Lunatics.

They're still absolutely raging about their embarrassing attempt at signing Scott Allan. 🤣

They dont seem to understand that if we want him, we'll take him. When a club like Hibs come calling you dont turn them down

Did anyone hear Jack’s interview pre match on Sky yesterday

Fair point. Only reason I mention it is because it would involve us paying yet another transfer fee. If we were sticking with a very tight, one in one out system, you'd imagine we'd just go for a free agent to replace Jackson, I can't imagine we made that much from his sale.

Glad that we're aiming to speculate to accumulate with our transfers, though.

Found that encouraging from Ross RE Boyle. Good to know that we're in talks with him at least.

Boyle imo should sign a 2 year deal and the gentleman’s agreement is stay for the season or the winter window at the very least and let us get top dollar for you. As long as a bid is minimum x amount we will give you the option to leave. Considering we missed a year playing time due to previous injuries. Everyone is happy.

Boyle needs to be careful too. Saw him go down early last night, and thought it was another knee injury, and that could leave him in a difficult position

And a signing-on fee will cover wage increase he's missing out on this season. 200k (money we'll recoup) + wages would mean he'll be on roughly 7k a till next August.

I'd like McCrorie in as it has the potential to make us more money going forward or be an asset to the club for a long time with his age and ability. If he came to us he'd be a good option in a few positions which would cover us well for a multitude of injury problems which could be helpful. Stephen McGinn doesn't really excite me that much as we already have the likes of Hallberg on the bench trying to get into the team so not sure he's any better than him?

But at the moment if Ross think having folks he knows around the squad helps then who am I to argue.

Paul was St Mirren's first choice RB when we signed him. Stephen is a free agent after being released by St Mirren. Big difference.

If we're going to keep talking about Stephen McG can we get 1 thing straight, he was not released by St Mirren. His contract ran out. I have no idea if St M offered him another deal, possibly not but he was not released!! In the old days there was a bit of a stigma about being a free transfer, now it's pretty much the opposite. Players choose to be free agents to improve their opportunities to command a better wage/signing on fee rather than their previous club receive a transfer fee. Again, I'm not saying that's the case with SM but there really isn't a "big difference" in his & his brother's situations.

If hemming signs for burton' he wouldn't have been good enough for hearts , im sure we have to set our standards a bit higher than burton targets ? Even though we're in a lower league set up, we've still got a couple to bring in imo, lets just wait and see there's a while to go yet ' if ever our season gets a go aheadYep, players at Burton's level won't be good enough for Hearts.

They'll be the sort of player who gets paid a lot and doesn't score many. Might even see them getting relegated.

Would be a make or break loan for Fraser I can't help for feel, really hope he gets the chance to grasp it.

Think Murray would do ok in that league, all the teams are honking so should cope ok

Content doesnt promote a pay model though. Anyway back on topic. Do we think we will still look to bring in another striker?

I’d hope so

Hearing Hibs still looking at Ross County Striker Ross Stewart! #Hibs

Would certainly weaken our Premiership title contenders, Ross County

I average less than 3 posts a day mate, I don't think you would see pages of blanks. Block away if you dislike me, that is perfectly reasonable.

I'll continue to discuss football and all things Hibs :)

Agree but less is more.

I'd be surprised if we're still actively trying for Stewart. He'd cost a fair bit and it's an area we're strong in.

It's not that I don't think the squad could use an extra striker for depth, I just don't think we'll be spending a good bit of money for what would essentially be cover. If we sign a backup striker, I'd imagine it'll be a loan or a cheap free agent.

Whether we're still 'tracking' him as a long-term target is another matter.

Its definitely nice to be after the quality players of teams in our league and the league below. Something we really dropped the ball on for most of the period between Mowbray and Stubbs. Few exeptions a long the way but I feel like a majority of our signings were from down south or abroad during that period. I don't really buy into the SPL experience thing being mandatory, football is football afterall, but it takes away some of the variables like moving country, being away from family etc that do effect players. It is something Aberdeen have done very well for years IMO. Guys like Mclean, Hayes and Rooney were all very good players for them for many years. Establishing ourselves during this period of undertainly would enable us to keep doing it and keep strenghening from our league rivals.

I think his time is long since gone tbh. A permanent move to someone like Dunfermline is probably best all round IMO. Think he could go on to have a solid enough career like Booth or Wotherspoon.

I totally agree.

Even during the period you mention we had our better signings and bright spots - generally players who fitted the description you mention.

We got lost when we were snobby about the Scottish leagues and assumed that we would be getting more from more glamorous signings, many of whom were disastrous.

Alan O'Brien, Ma-Kalambay, De Graaf, Thornhill, James Collins etc.

Liam Miller, Stokes, Nish, McBride - all had a bit of experience of Scottish football and all did fine for us.

I know I've glossed over loads and there will be players who don't fall into the neat boxes here but I generally agree with you.

It all seemed obvious under Stubbs, then we didn't do it for a bit, now we're back to doing it again.

If we are looking at Stewart hopefully no one is lining up a bid for Doidge

Is it a coincidence we seem to be adding more height to the team? Gogic and Nisbet both over 6ft. As is McRorie and Stewart who we are/have been linked with.

Perhaps not like for like regarding pace, but if Boyle goes then getting Stewart in would soften the blow as he looks capable playing on that right side of the pitch.

If Dunfermline are interest I’d just let them have Murray. Get him off the wage bill totally. Insert a buy back clause just in case, but he’s not currently good enough for Hibs and hasn’t shown anything to suggest he will be.

It’s done Scott Martin wonders who’s found his level. Let the lad go and play.

I know. And I think they know that as well. They need to improve the content but they are losing money hand over fist and can’t afford to do it. That’s why I have some sympathy. They know the solution but need massive investment for it to work. I think the paper will be gone soon enough.

The patter Rangers fans were using when Rangers were trying to sign Scotty Allan from us back in 2015 when he ended up handing in a transfer request.

Maybe be a replacement for Doidge? His value is probably as high now as it’s going to get? Maybe Ross sees it as a way to bring in funds to replace a couple of areas?

A buy back clause would be pointless. He’s no going to be good enough.

It’ll be a good move for him though, get him playing.
