Rightly so our nhs and care workers are being lauded for the great job their doing, but supermarket staff are almost forgotten in this crisis despite the fact that they’re providing the most essential service that most of us will need during this crisis. I’ve twice seen staff providing medical attention to someone without a thought for their own safety. When this is all over I hope these people are recognised and rewarded for the work they’ve done.

I agree, I have two family members in Edinburgh and a close friend in Liverpool who all work in the NHS, one a nurse, one a radiographer and one a porter, all three have said the same thing to me “don’t refer to me as a hero, I’m just doing the job I am paid to do”. Yes it is exceptional circumstances but they are doing the job they signed up for as are supermarket workers, both are doing an exceptional job in difficult times but one group is lauded as heroes, there will no doubt be many more NHS workers who feel the same as the three I have mentioned.

Most of us will never need to be in a hospital because of covid. But we will probably all be in a supermarket or smaller local shop.

I make a point of saying thank you at entrance, checkout/self service and exit. Easy to do 👍 and better than an anonymous clap.

:clapper:

I've worked in shops in the past and it ain't an easy job. They're putting themselves at risk and they deserve better pay, like so many others.

My fiance works in Asda and my sister is a nurse so I have an interest in 'both camps' as it were.

Both of them, but my sister in particular, just seem a bit bewildered by the attention they are getting. 'It's just my job' is the go to when asked about it. Maybe it's a coping mechanism but a lot of the moans and groans I hear are just the same things they always moan about when it comes to work.

I always like to think I am polite to shop workers but I have definitely been making an extra effort to acknowledge everyone and thank them when I'm in. I get frustrated when I see the way some people are behaving in supermarkets so I can only imagine what the workers must be thinking. I know Asda have plans in place for a bonus for their staff in the summer, I think it's an extra weeks pay, and they have revised their sick pay policy so no one is penalised if they have to isolate so that's welcome.

100%, I told a lassie in Aldi's @ Chesser how much she was appreciated, she broke down in tears, a speck of dust got into my eye too.

Definitely deserve the recognition, early on in this mess I've seen them having to deal with some real crap from the "great British public " probably the same people who are now out there banging their cooking pots together every Thursday.

I previously took them for granted but will now make sure I respect their rules ask how they're doing and say thanks. Just folk at the sharp end doing their job in high exposure situations. I've got an eye on which businesses do and don't look after their staff for future support, the supermarket boards should forego chunks of their bonuses and pay rises to reward their front line people.

They do a great job. They deserve the bonus they are getting, at least in the major supermarkets.

If these shops were to close, I would lose all hope. The great British corner shop is very specific to this country.

Supermarkets and corner shops are the engines that are keeping things moving at the moment and the staff deserve every bit of praise that goes their way.Every person who has hassled and threatened these guys for not having hand wash or fresh chicken should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.

My Daughter,a nurse, was in Morrisons at Hunters Tryst today and showed her NHS card to get her discount. The cashier proceeded to hand her a bunch of tulips and gave them to her for nothing. She was genuinely touched as in her opinion his job is also a key job. She thanked him and accepted them graciously and brought them to me as a small gift. By his kindness he made two people happy. Thank you kind Sir.

I’m a member of USDAW and the reported increase of verbal and physical abuse of shop workers since lockdown is shaming.

That’s a disgrace. Given the crap pay and conditions in normal circumstances, it’s shocking that people in the front line of possible infection are being treated like this.

Are the staff getting any sort of bonus at all? I know the supermarkets are all different companies so it might differ.

I think I seen an article detailing the main supermarkets bonuses/pay increases and most were doing something.

I always tried to be polite and say thanks when in shops anyway, but doubley so at the moment.
