Any of ESPN's 30 for 30 series is a must. Absolutely super and some of the best television I've seen. They commissioned 30 films for their 30th anniversary but there are more than 30 of them now. Pretty much every one is fantastic.

Stewart Cosgrove and I both enjoyed it although it is not without it's flaws. What it does do well is give you a good feel for how football was in those early years.
*It is a period drama with a football backstory so your wife or/and girlfriend could watch and enjoy it with you.

The English Game is very much Downton Abbey with a footballing back story. Enjoyed it all the same.

Glad this thread has pointed the way to finding The Impossible Job on YouTube. No doubt it will send me down a Mike Bassett rabbit hole and then One Night in Turin.

American Football wise - The All or Nothing series is unreal with its insight into the ins and outs of a billion dollar industry. Each season follows a team that the producers clearly believe are playoff/Super Bowl bound and it just doesn’t work out that way. Second season the coach gets fired on screen. There’s 5 series or 6 now but it spawned the Man City and all blacks ones. First couple seasons are very good watch

Not a football movie but Hibs related. "Scot Squad - the Chief does Edinburgh" on BBC Scotland has 3 10 minute shorts on History Literature and Geography. Worth a watch. Police Chief Cameron Miekelson (Jack Docherty) chats to various people and visits places in Edinburgh. In the Literature episode he visits the Heart of Midlothian mosaic of setts up the High Street. He explains that the tradition is to spit on it to give you good luck especially if spit right in the middle. He says, "Of course it gives you particualr satisfaction to know that you are spitting on the name of Edinburgh's second and potentially third football team, Heart of Midlothian." Then he lets a big gobber go. I've always liked him but he's gone up in my estimation.

There’s (or was a while back) a fascinating interview by Hugh McIlvaney with Stephen Roche on YouTube.

It was shortly after he had won the Giro, Tour de France and World Championship in the same year (87 or 88?). Although the Tour stories are interesting it’s the tales of how his own team tried to prevent him win the Giro that make this a good watch.

Anything with Hugh is excellent. If anyone hasn't listened the McIlvanney conversations with Geoff Webster are fantastic. Covers all different sports including the iconic Scottish managers, great players. His boxing memories and also horse racing. It is truly hypnotic when he reads some of his articles from the past.

Soccertown USA on youtube.

The story of how the success of modern US soccer, the rapid growth if the MLS and the general acceptance of the sport into the Amarican mainstream hinged on the success of the US national team in the early to mid 90s.

This was a side built and inspired by the historically Scottish community of just one small town in the shadow of the Manhattan skyscrapers, Kearny New Jersey.

Kearny is a rough and tough place. Its basically like Airdrie or Greenock transported to America, a great wee watch.

completely agree, really enjoying this. Michael Jordan was/is one of my sporting heroes, it’s fascinating learning about what was going on behind the scenes at a time when access to American sports was very limited, and knowledge of off-field happenings was much more restricted, whilst remembering watching some of those games and marvelling at Jordan’s and his teammates abilities.

A couple of mentions for 'I Believe In Miracles' earlier.

Of a certain era certainly but boy, was it a ride at the time and I'm pleased to say I was there. Nottingham Forest reminded the world how to play the game in the way it should be played, with great skill, panache, entertainment and not least, honour.

I recall Irvine Welsh said this film was the best one about football he'd ever seen. Watch it here like I've just done (again) for absolutely nothing:

Just watched that and loved it.

Never realized how successful he was to be honest and despite his football success he wanted to be remembered for his foundation and what he set up, that can help others.
Says it all about a wonderful man.

Yeah I was the same. Actually brought a lump to my throat at the end. Guy was the epitome of class. Never thought I'd say it but winning Italia 90 would have been fitting for him.

The Least Expected Day on Netflix is a good watch. A year in the life of the Movistar Pro cycling team.

Its my favourite of all. What a team they built at Forest and there were some fabulous anecdotes from the players giving an insight into how Cloughie worked.

It is. I watched it last week. The guys in the team from poor families in South America are tough as teak.

This below was absolutely outstanding. Thanks Stu & others first sharing. If you were there for that period, just wow! Great Scottish content of course with McGovern, Gemill, Burns, Robertson all prominent.

Great watch and not mentioned, a great soundtrack.
That was all happening at the end of my teens.
Vivid memories.

Senna is a brilliant documentary, even if you're not into motorsport. Directed by the same guy as the recent Maradona documentary.

For those who haven’t seen it it is on itv4 on Thursday night at 10.45. Before that on the same channel is the 91 epl season, the last before the premier league was set up. That’s at 8 o’clock. Cracking evening.

ESPN's 30 for 30 series is brilliant. Particularly recommended 'Once Brothers' about 2 basketball players torn apart by the yugoslav civil war and 'Of Miracles and Men' about the USSR ice hockey team that lost to the USA in the winter Olympics.

Most of these are repeated on a regular basis on BT sport, especially now that there is no sport...
