View Full Version : SARS-Covid-2, a microcosm of Climate Crisis?

Been a while since I posted on here and I apologise for weighing in with something so weighty and depressing. I get how everyone wants to deny it because it's "too depressing". Maybe, just, maybe, it should be depressing that we're wiping ourselves out?

But.

I struggle not to see this current crisis as a microcosm of Climate Crisis.

Like SARS-Covid-2, we didn't take it seriously enough until it was a tad too late. We laughed and took the p'ss until it was too late.

Like
SARS-Covid-2 it could stifle our life. Unlike
SARS-Covid-2, we won't have a 2nd chance.

We are heading towards the 6th mass extinction, all science tells us this unless it works for a lobby of an oil or aviation company or something. We're wiping out species like there is no tomorrow. Go us. Yay.

I guess people without kids mightn't care (as long as they hate animals). Lolz, we won't be there. I guess some with kids still won't care. Lolz, we won't be there. But those with kids you love. Really?

Almost all science says we're utterly ****ed (ruined) without drastic action. But, equally, we're right at the tipping point that it can be saved. It needs to be radical (according to almost all scientists), so much that we need to drop all carbon emissions to zero in 20yrs.

This should be screaming from the front page of every newspaper. It's far worse than the current virus, it really is.

So why aren't we talking about it? Heads in sand, we're ok. As long as we can comply with consumerism, we'll be ok. They'll save us, those trillionaires. It was, clearly, their selflessness that made them rich.

Is it just me that sees Trump, et al, slewing through humanity with their unfettered individualism, their capitalist cronyism? I mean, surely you all see this? I accept it's hard to know how to combat it, but surely you all see it?

Maybe some amongst you even deny the climate crisis? It's a left wing socialist, communist scam and Greta is a paid shrill of the Russian and Chinese?

While we're at it, let's all mock a 17yo autistic girl, cleverer girl than any of us. Lol, haha, funny memes, look at the little girl telling us the emperor has no clothes!

I dunno. Is this even deniable even more?

Or have we just accepted it?

Maybe you're believing in the Paris Convention? LOLOLOL Even if Trump hadn't denied it it's risible. 2.0 by the end of the century? Hahaha.

I could be wrong.

I could be wrong.

Don't think you are. What's needed would entail a shedload of international co-operation but 'sovereignty', 'the will of 17.4million people', 'America first' - the signs aren't good in some parts. While the WHO, UN, EU, Unesco, WWF, etc, still exist, warts and all, there's a chance that the principle of committed international collaboration can have value. A silver lining of the current health crisis is that the current populist 'leadership' :faf: of both the US and UK, at least, might be shown up for what it is - clueless. I have hope still.

No one political ideology is to blame for climate change. However, one thing is for sure is that free enterprise (capitalism) is the cure and not Communism!

If you believe otherwise, you’re probably the type to believe only 3000 people died in China to CV-19.

About the response I expected.

Someone agreeing with me, the vast majority ignoring it, and someone accusing me of being a communist because I dared suggest that maybe, just maybe, unfettered free-market capitalism wasn't healthy for our species continuing. Wasn't expecting the communist charge, left-wing conspiracy was as crazy as I expected. Maybe the same thing to some.

I posted similar on Facebook and got zero response inbetween hundreds liking my posts of buying kazoos drunk before lockdown and shaving my head during lockdown. But, then again, I expect most of my Facebook "friends", if the world was burning all around them, would change their profile picture and go outside to clap for the firemen.

As you were. Can't wait to see what the away strip looks like.

What's happening just now actually makes me think it could be possible. Needs a massive swing of opinion in the populace. But maybe, just maybe.

Be careful not to use the condescending tone that many yessers and remainers used. It doesn't win people over to your point.

I do agree with you and I very much hope that this experience will create a bit more awareness of the world around us and how we're all intrinsically linked. The UK experience of ignoring an emerging catastrophe in Italy for several weeks and tens of thousands dying as a result should hopefully be a warning about how easy it is to sleep walk into catastrophe. It's too soon and too raw to say so, and many people are losing dear friends and relatives, but I do believe there's a chance that the world will become a better place when this is over.

Thanks for the first paragraph. Totally accepted.

And I hope you’re right with the 2nd. I too have optimism. I, really, think most people are decent. Their minds can be swayed to the obvious. I look at things like plastic shopping bags, smoking #metoo and know people are decent. Just need a wee kick in the arse now and then :-)

Agreed fella, where are we without hope. This awful situation presents opportunity to reshape society. I can only hope we take it. It won't happen on its own though, we'll have to battle and take others with us.

Unfortunately, climate change deniers will begin to feel the effects of the human climate impact that they so often belittle, those that environmental scientists have been warning of for decades - and quite soon.

Some of the damage that has been done is irreparable. Some of it can absolutely be reduced and reversed, but it will certainly take a united effort on a global scale, one which unfortunately looks unlikely. A lot of western governments are patting themselves on the back for setting carbon targets for 2030, 2050, when in fact these figures are far too little and too late. Whilst some governments aren't even trying. My overwhelming gut feeling is that most industrialised nations will only start to make meaningful changes once it begins to make a significant impact on the wellbeing of their population and economy, at which stage there's probably little that can be done.

I think you're both right that there is some room for optimism though. From what I've read, it seems that environmental science is taken a lot more seriously than it was in the 90s and I think there is a generation of children currently in education that really, genuinely care about the planet they live on. Maybe they will help to inspire a much earlier green revolution, it's desperately needed.

On a side note, the mocking of Greta is pathetic and I can't believe that any functioning adult could take pride in taking the piss out of an autistic child who has the audacity to care about the earth.

Two great posts above.

I’m glad I’m not alone in seeing the potential of hope. I’m glad I’m not alone in seeing this. I don’t know what little I can do but sometimes throwing a few seeds about can make a forest grow. An idea can spread, somewhat ironically, like contagion. It really can.

I hope our current generation of children do get behind Greta. It’s shameful we haven’t done anything for them but they still have time. I also have a funny feeling women might head the revolution.

Anyway, here’s to hope.

The planet will survive by the way. The planet isn’t in danger until the sun goes red supergiant in about 5 billion years. The planet will survive fine.

it’s homosapien that is in danger. We’ve only been here for 200,000 years, turtles laugh at us as drama queens. Turtles roll out the sea, lay their eggs, look at us like the fools we are and stroll back out for a wee swim. Have been doing it for millions of years. Animals are fantastic, animals have countless skills we know nothing of, we should really learn to live with them. Eating them, even though they eat other at times, should be below us. Giraffes are the best. Big lanky pacifist ****s that they are.

The current capitalist model of neo-liberalism isn’t going to save us from man-made climate change that’s for sure.

:faf:

Have never seen that before but I’ve read about it: It’s what they do to compete for mating. Just a wee square go over a bird, we’ve all been there. They’re still alright in my book. One licked my entire face with one flick of its tongue one time and I laughed for about 10 minutes at the back of it. They could do with using some mouthwash in the morning though.
