View Full Version : Improving Wifi
I’m on a virgin hub at the moment. It’s a bit crap and some parts of the house get a crap signal.
I was going to get a Belkin router that I had before and plug that into the hub but there seems to be other options like plug in extenders and mesh wifi.
Anyone know about this and care to give me the benefit of their experience?

I have a virgin hub and it's great. I also had half the house as a back spot. I downloaded the virgin connect app and followed the steps. I got a booster box for the wee mans room from the app tests.(the box was free, but I had to pay £30 for the guy to come out with it). It just plugs into a wall socket, and honestly it's been a godsend.
My laddie got a smart TV for Xmas which he hadn't been able to use much as WiFi was dropping. Since I got the boost box it's ran like a dream. So good infact he somehow managed to hijack my PS4 and it sin their permanently!

does the hub have any electrical equipment quite near it, or a cordless phone base unit? Be surprised just how much these things can impact the WiFi

Mesh is much better than extenders but you won’t need either unless your house is massive or has very thick walls.
In my experience the virgin hub is crap with lots of connected devices. Virgin hub in modem mode and a half decent wireless router is fine.

Have sky but terrible signal through the house (new build)
Tried a netgear orbi and it was a slight improvement but still not great
eventually settled on amplifi (https://www.amplifi.com/amplifi-hd) and havent looked back since.
The main unit connects via cable into the sky router and thats it.
Main connection is 70Mb, and wifi on the laptop gets a solid 40Mbps throughout the house.

I use Google WiFi. Each node isn’t particularly cheap (about £100 a pop) but works a treat.

I’ve a older tablet that unfortunately can’t get 5G, and recently found that the 2G was dropping right down as more 5G devices were getting connected during lockdown.
Made various enquiries about options, one of them being a new Hub 3 from Virgin (it was a free upgrade). Since discovered there are apparently similar issues with the Hub 3 and the best solution is to buy a good quality router and use the Virgin Hub in modem mode.
What I’ve ended up doing is upgrading the older tablet to a new Samsung Tab A that has 5G and that then rules out the need for anything to need the dodgy 2G signal.
If I get any further issues with WiFi speeds I will get a new router and put the Hub into modem mode.
The two routers I had whittled it down to were the ASUS RT-AC57U and the ASUS RT-AC85P.
The former seemed to have a reasonable enough spec for what I needed, and the latter if I was feeling a bit more flush and wanted a few extra features and wider speed ranges.

I'm struggling to get a decent WiFi signal at the back of the house even though it's only about 30 feet from my Sky hub. I really don't understand why.
I've taken to setting my phone up as a WiFi hotspot halfway and connecting my tablet to that., It works well.
Ta, everyone.
Went for a Netgear Orbi mesh set up in the end.
I’m finally getting the wifi speeds I’m paying for. Big test will be when the PS get switched whilst me and Mrs Colr are watching different movies.
