View Full Version : Scottish Football Club’s Reactions to COVID-19 crisis

This thread can act as a scorecard of Scottish Football Clubs reaction to the current crisis facing humanity. If anyone reads anything about a specific team online it would be useful to post a link to the club statement, news article, twitter account, social media links etc and I can update the OP as appropriate with a team summary and we can gauge overall reactions and work out who the upstanding members of humanity are and who are the villains.

I’ll split the reactions in to two categories: Positive and Negative

The positive classification being for those clubs that have generally committed to stay loyal to their employees, players, club and community. The negative classification speaks for itself.

POSITIVE:

ABERDEEN FC
A positive reaction to their community sending important messages asking people to stick together and are opening up their main stand as a virus testing point. Nice.

LIVINGSTON FC
Positive and supportive towards their employees going that extra step towards the community by offering free meals for community members in need in a time of crisis. Kind statements from the club towards the Livi “family” and players offering financial support to the community. A total credit.

NAIRN COUNTY FC
Strong firm reaction and acknowledgement of their place in the highland region by offering players to go shopping, dog walking and picking up medical supplies as a thank you for the support of the community over the years. Would bring a tear to a glass eye. Inspirational.

PARTICK THISTLE
A club statement issued to say they will be supporting the fans, making calls to the elderly and offering entertainment in the form of replays of past matches . . . . hold on . . . wouldn't this cause more distress for Jags fans? Ha. It's the thought that counts though and their response is still classy.

ROSS COUNTY
A statement issued to say they will continue to honour their contracts and pay their players in full throughout the crisis. An example that some bigger clubs could learn from. Worthy of praise.

ST MIRREN
Their Charitable Foundation are providing support to the Paisley Men’s Shed charity project delivering food parcels medications etc. On the lookout for Charitable partners to co-operate with in a time of crisis and sending out strong messages of support for the Renfrewshire community. Offering refunds for tickets to postponed matches. Good guys.

NEGATIVE:

HMFC
First out the blocks with their reaction to the situation providing an awful example in how not to behave during a crisis. Told everyone they can get tae f … apart from Hicks who might be sold for money during the close season. Players told to beat it if they aren’t willing to change their contracts. Club Staff told to take pay cuts or get out too. Generally using the crisis as an excuse to cover up the mismanagement and spending excesses of the club since Administration. Total embarrassment to Edinburgh and to anyone with a sense of wellbeing towards community and humanity. A PR disaster for the club and also their fans who are surprisingly supportive of the actions. Disgusting.

You’re surprised that their fans are supportive of their actions? I’d have been surprised had they not been based on past experience.

Positive:

Daniel Stendel He's apparently waived his wages until further notice to help out the club. He might be well paid but nobody forced him to do this, so surely deserves some praise.

Negative:

Anne Budge She claimed that no staff would drop below The Living Wage, then promptly sacked all the Academy Staff (note to Budge, Zero Pounds is well below minimum wage).

Craig Levein Hangs about his club like a bad smell and is partly responsible for the mess they're in but has yet to tear up his own contract.

The Rangers Seem to be more concerned about Celtc winning Ten-In-A-Row than the people dying or losing their livelihoods from this terrible illness.

Steady now. Let’s not be hasty and give that mob any credit. To counter your nomination I agree with the poster who says that Stendel will have been put up to this by Budge who’ll be paying him under the counter ( or maybe in kind ........ yuck : :greengrin ) It’s their devious plan to shame their ‘greedy’ players into accepting reduced salaries.

Sorry, that's a positive for Stendel, not HMFC, so they will not be getting any credit for that. It's disgusting HMFC have asked him to take a wage cut so soon after employing him, which means it's yet another person HMFC have employed they couldn't afford.

Definite dishonourable mention for Sevco required, for playing their usual myopic, spiteful ‘we are the victims’ card in the midst of a global crisis.

Pattullo has criticised them in The Scotsman (https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/hearts/alan-pattullo-hearts-go-reverse-ann-budge-revolution-stalls-2502795).

The trouble is it’s looking increasingly as if Budge and her directors are also unfit for the task.

It certainly appears less a Covid-19 inflicted crisis and more one created by risky financial brinkmanship.

It’s good their true colours are at long last showing through. A dull tarnished shameful maroon (if shame is a feature that can be associated with a colour).

Shame

I don’t get the Stendel positive thing?

He’s basically been sacked, but without saying it.

He’s back home in Germany and not getting paid. I’ll bet he never manages another game for Hearts.

Earlier press reports and social media suggested that it was Stendel himself who offered the zero pay option. Is there another side to the story emerging?

Some great work being lots of clubs. Heartwarming. Football is a powerful tool and can provide a lot of positive energy and leadership.

Should hear more from our club in coming days and weeks.

Great advice from HCF to young people and inspiring exercise. Club communications team have produced some barry content this week to plug a massive gap and move forward with - Porteous and Hanlon interviews were superb.

According to Barnsley, Stendel has form for touting himself to other clubs while still under contract.

If Hearts aren’t paying him, maybe he feels more free to enquire about potential job opportunities in Germany?

Or maybe he just fancied a holiday?

So either it was his idea or Budge’s, pretty big coincidence otherwise!

You think it was his idea to go to AB and suggest a pay cut? No chance. She’s told him, the same as the rest of the staff, to take a cut or bolt.

Stendal talks crap. He lies in pretty much every interview he does trying to say the right things to please Hearts fans.

He knew nowt about Scottish football but in his recent interview he’s saying how other Scottish clubs will have the same problems as Hearts, if not worse.

He can’t possibly know that. Even if it was true it’s a bit crap to be gloating about other clubs potentially having bigger financial problems.

I think we’ve probably heard the last from him anyways, he’ll not be back.

Aberdeen have released a statement detailing how severe this will be

Predictably the replies are from piles of Huns giving it big licks

Are they the stupidest ****s in world football?

This could take years for many of us to recover from.

It'll undoubtedly hit Hibs at some point, I hope we're well placed enough to survive it.

Hibs are maybe a bit fortunate that a few of our bigger earners are on loan, something which many of us didnt like but as luck would have it, will help.

Both dons and hearts pushed boat out at Christmas and signed big earners on big contracts, so not as easy to shed them.

That being said, if this goes on indefinitely it will absolutely hit all clubs, and i think only celtic would be able to ride it out over even a medium term period.

Here is Aberdeen official statement. They bring in similar amounts of turnover to us and Herts at similar times. Hope we're well placed but if not please do the necessary:

The Rangers

They've graciously offered the use of the Albion Car Park to Army, Police and Staff at the 'nearby' Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

What a gracious gesture, Allowing Staff from a hospital that is a 30 minute walk away to use a Car Park that is sitting empty anyway.
