View Full Version : Fifa 20 Career Mode

Bought Fifa pretty much every year for the best part of 20 years. Have always been a staunch career mode man, never been a fan of ultimate team, tried to play it a couple times but I really don't see the appeal, I prefer the challenge of taking a team from lower league obscurity to champions league success, building teams over multiple seasons and growing and developing players.
Over the years attention has gravitated towards ultimate team which is understandable as it's where they make most of their money, but career mode has become increasingly neglected to the point where it's unplayable now, Fifa games from years ago are now streets ahead of what we have now, the game is so full of bugs and glitches that just make it impossible to play.
Teams don't play their strongest squads, Man city will play a team full of 75 overall players and leave guys like Sterling and Aguero on the bench and things like clubs hoarding players, Barcelona might have 4 Right backs all over 85 overall, but have no natural left backs, Liverpool and Chelsea fighting relegation after a few seasons whereas Arsenal have won the league and Bournemouth are 2nd, the list is endless. It's evident that when they made the game they haven't even bothered to play career mode as if they had they would of seen these things straight away.
Any other Career Moders amongst us have these issues? Thinking about trying Football Manager soon as feel that may be more up my street, what is the new PES games like in terms of a purely career based game mode?
As for Fifa I think I'm probably done with it, it's been a growing problem year after year but I kept buying it in hope they would have fixed it this time but enough is enough.

That's disappointing.
I was going to buy a pre-owned version of it purely for career mode as ive not played it in a couple years and like yourself i was a career mode diehard going back many years.

They’ve got staggeringly poor attention to detail. They fanny about with things like negotiation of transfers but the actual mechanics of the way squads are managed, built etc is awful.
I went into Newcastle about 6 years into a career and they had a squad of 45 odd players, then in the January 5 pre-contract signings arrived. The balance was awful, 5 left backs and no right backs. 2 strikers but 5 central defensive mid-fielders.
Actual stadiums are great, but the total lack of any real stadiums in leagues outside the big 5 is dreadful.

Online games are so scripted. How many goals are scored and conceded in the 45th minute, games so frustrating at times.

The career mode could be so much better, as the OP says it's evident everything the company does is about ultimate team, the career mode is an afterthought. My boy insists on getting the new FIFA every year but it's not worth it.

FIFA 19 seen a season for me where Celtic finish bottom of the league as they decided to sell all their goalkeepers and play outfield players in goal.
Bought PES 2020 this year and in most areas it is far superior.

Hahaha ffs.
I gave up after last year as I was fed up with the more or less unskippable negotiation scenes that added nothing to the game.
Couple years ago, I signed lewandowski on a pre contract on something like 200k a week. Then later in the January window, real madrid signed him. I ended up with no striker and they still took 200k out of my wage budget.

I don’t play any online FIFA but even just playing it in the house against other folk it’s like that. 45 mins and 90 mins and it’s gagging on a goal.

I heard a podcast a few months ago in which it was stated that a quarter of EA's yearly revenue comes from Ultimate Team modes alone.. If that is true then I can't see them focusing on Career Mode anytime soon.

Long standing PES fan here, always preferred it over fifa for gameplay and a better overall football simulation.
Have had some seriously long running master league campaigns which is probably the career mode equivalent.
It’s almost football manageresque with its scouting out and developing young talent and such.

You just know when it’s coming. Every loose ball, clearance, bobble goes against you. Can tell it’s coming a mile a way.

Sounds decent, think I'm going to give PES a go, the only thing that put me off was they never had the licensing for teams, so teams didn't have their real names (think Liverpool were something like Merseyside Reds). But think they've improved it quite a bit now and even have some form of partnership with Celtic and Rangers? Unsure if that will effect the attention to detail on the rest of the league but it can't be any worse than FIFA

For PlayStation at least you can download real team, player and competition names and images onto a USB stick and put it into the game.
