Clive Allen did sign for Arsenal, but never played a single game for them.

Yeah, straight swap for Kenny Sansom and went to Palace and made a front two of Flanagan and Allen (one for the crusties like me). I think Palace wanted Allen but could't afford the fee so Arsenal bought him and then got Sansom, who had been a long term target of theirs, in exchange. This all happened in the close season so Allen never played for Arsenal. Don't recall this ever happening anywhere else.
