View Full Version : Brothers who have played for Hibs?

G B Young

There's probably been a thread on this before, but with Paul McGinn seemingly on his way to Hibs I'm trying to recall how many brothers have played for Hibs.

The best known are probably Joe and Gerry Baker but there were also the Miller boys (Alex's sons) and I seem to recall a couple of Dempster brothers in the 90s?

Out of interest did anyone on here see both Joe and Gerry Baker play for Hibs?

I did.

Joe needs no introduction as many on here would have seen him on his second coming.....I saw him in both.

Gerry was a very good striker who I think we bought from Dundee United, or he went there after us...although he made his name with St Mirren and scored 10 goals in a Scottish Cup tie against Glasgow University I think.

I still believe that one season in the early sixties Hibs avoided relegation mainly through Gerry and Ronnie Simpson.

Gerry would score them and Ronnie Simpson would defy the opposition at the other end.

Interestingly enough there is an Oz connection with the Bakers and a player in my domestic competition the A League.

A guy called Ryan Strain plays regularly for Adelaide United, and he just happens to be Gerry Baker’s grandson.

43 goals in 84 games for Hibs by Gerry according to Wiki, which also says we signed him from Man City.

There was a book written about the Baker brothers a few years back:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fabulous-Baker-Boys-Greatest-Strikers/dp/1909715336

Funny story in the prologue about how Joe Baker's London taxi driver radioed for police assistance when his passenger asked to be taken to the England team hotel, claiming he was playing for them!

Incorrect. All four Showumni triplets played for Hibs, just not in the same game.

Namely:

1. The aforementioned Thomas Showumni
2. Enoch Showumni
3. Dave Showumni
4. Edwin Van Der Showumni

Do you think they were chosen by the manager or the recruitment team?

I reckon it was their mum who decided.

Ah,The Baker Boys, true legends and was blessed to see them play and in Joe's case the return !

Did not know about Ryan Strain, with those genes ,WOW,come on Hibs get him signed!

Do not think the youngsters on here know what great strikers these guys were, particularily Joe who was certainly one of the best strikers in the UK and Europe at his peak.

Greg played nearly 200 games in the Scottish leagues so he clearly had some ability. I definitely remember him scoring for Hibs, possibly against Aberdeen. Graeme I recall going to Berwick after Hibs but think he dropped into junior football and possibly became an accountant.

But you're right, neither were good enough at Hibs.

Similar with Andy Goram and his father Lewis who was also a Hibs goalie. Though dont think he actually played.
