Has this ever happened to anyone? I’ve been getting letters from all over the north of England for driving in bus lanes. I’ve got the police coming on Monday, I’m just hoping they’ve not used the car for a crime as that’s going to be a major pain in the arse.

Yes it happened to me some years ago when I had a company car.

Apparently it had been flashed by a speed camera in Cheshire. I wrote to the inspector in whose name it had been issued but had no reply and no further correspondence.

My wifes brother-in-law (who lives just outside Edinburgh) was down in Manchester on business.
He was blue lighted by the police and when he pulled over, armed police jumped out and unceremoniously dragged him out at gun point.
Turns out his plates had been cloned on an identical car and used in a couple of armed robberies on jewellers in the Manchester/Liverpool area.
Once he'd calmed down, the Police knew right away he wasn't the organised gang they were after, worryingly they told him a lot of the gangs in that area will stakeout motorway service stations and keep an eye out for cars/plates they're after as they come from or to the north as there is less chance the original owner will come across the clone.

The b-i-l still had to spend a wee bit time with the police to confirm whereabouts on certain days then go through the hassle and cost of re-registering his car with a new plate and update his insurance.

Hope you're incident isn't as complicated.
