Have been starting to follow this on the news over the last couple of days, initially I had presumed that it was a sort of par-for-the-course situation that they have to deal with but seeing some of the figures and stats involved, it's horrendous.

I read on twitter earlier that along with 8 human deaths, an estimated half a billion animals have been killed in the fires. It's a huge disaster, and looks like it's going to get worse.

This is the size of the fire. The smoke has reached NZ which is as close to OZ as Greece is to us.
It’s grim but Australian tend not to give a monkeys about climate change so until they start to care it’s hard for everybody else to.

Absolutely incredulous that the climate change deniers are trying to shift the blame onto the Greens who they claim are at fault because if legislation they introduced banning back burning as a means of fire protection. The Greens have never been in government in Australia. Fake news is totally ****ing up our world or rather those willing/wanting to believe it are.

I'm not getting into the bitch fight of who's to blame but am concerned the Aussies aren't seeking outside assistance to help fight the fires. I didn't follow the start of the fires due to the time of year but fear they have been slow off the mark to react adequately.

Many nations in North America and Europe possess specialist aircraft for this purpose and as it's 'off-season' for most of them I think those countries should be offering their help and asking the Australian Government to enable them to mobilise and get them over to the affected areas. Countries such as America, Canada, France, Croatia, Spain etc. have experts in the field of controlling and fighting bush fires.

Eta, just Googled and found several such aircraft, (Canadairs, C130s) are indeed available and the Government is being criticised for not making attempts to obtain their use.

Go to get the finger out Oz!

The Aussies don’t give a monkeys about climate change.

I wonder if this will change any views? I doubt it and to be honest, if we only have 13 years to eliminate the causes then we might as well ‘doff our caps’ to the problem too.

The coal companies own the politicians of both parties and their economy has been growing for 30years on the back of the mining industry and associated financing. They don’t make anything in Australia, all their wealth comes out the ground. I doubt things will change that much.

I saw the video of the Aussie PM doing a tour of a village/town that suffered from the fires, one woman in tears goes to him to complain about the response and he just walks away while his assistant tries to hush her up,

Their PM, from the two clips you sent and the small bits I’ve read, seems like an utter ****.

He very much is but the Australian economy is booming and he is seen as strong on immigration which is a massive issue there. I would say he is favourite to win again in 2022.

Which is a surprise given the huge climate marches that they produced in the last year.

I can’t imagine any of them voting for him.

But the rest obviously do.

I’ve seen a few people talking of the irony of Australians fleeing a disaster on boats. It may well be crass and insensitive but the right are never worried about being crass when they use pictures and videos of people fleeing disasters to suit their agenda.

then, we get this **** from jeremy clarkson..

https://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/jeremy-clarkson-once-again-stirs-21218993

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? host Jeremy, 59, took to his column in The Sun to make several close-to-the-bone jokes, including that "God didn't want people to live in Australia."
"I've suspected for some time God didn't want people to live in Australia," he opened the piece, "He created it as a continent far, far away where he could house all his experiments that had gone wrong."

Similarities to UK in terms of demographics and to the US in that the opposition actually won the popular vote, but the Labor (no "u", annoys the hell out of me) vote was so concentrated in urban centres. It's rural/small-town Australia that decides who gets to be PM. You also have the Murdoch factor here, after all, it's where he was spawned.

Some of it has already been going for several weeks and as has been mentioned we’re even seeing hazy skies over here in NZ due to the massive amount of smoke blowing over. To put it in perspective it’s about a 3 - 4 hour flight between the two countries, that’s how far the smoke is going.

The height of summer, and of course the heat, is Jan-Feb so it could well get worse long before it gets better.

I keep getting requests to donate to a fund for saving wildlife and for the firefighters. Part of me wants to because it's evidently a tragic situation but I also think why the **** should I? If the PM of Australia has his head in the sand about one of the causes and cities are spending millions on fireworks displays why should I donate £20?

Glasgow 2020 is probably the most important political and social event in recent history and you have the PM of a country that is literally on fire being controlled by coal companies and denying climate change is an issue. All the while they want you and I to pay for their negligence. It's probably time to just accept the world is ****ed, there's no political will to solve the issue and huge swathes of the public don't care either.

Yip, the Australians have opposed every single attempt at agreeing a global carbon reduction strategy so it’s hard to feel sorry for them.

There's an argument to be made that throwing huge swathes of public money at the symptoms is only delaying the change in mindset that is needed to find a preventive cure.

Report published in 2008 that the Australian govt completely ignored.

It's also going to be interesting to see how many people, who are forced to leave their homes and seek refuge elsewhere, will expect to be treated given the prevailing attitude towards refugees in Australia.

Might change a few attitudes...

That small observation aside, I agree with you - they've elected a PM who cares not a jot about the environment - it's as much on those that elected him as anyone else.

I know this will annoy the older folk on here, but the political choices our ageing population (and those in other developed countries) are making are proving to be enormously destructive.

There’s something reassuring about the “youth of today” being pretty clued up, but it’s a strange world we live in where a 16 year old schoolgirl has science on her side and the president of the USA is a science-denying moron.

It is depressing that the UK, the USA and Australia should choose corrupt imbeciles who are in the pocket of the hydrocarbon companies.

The SNP have some interesting decisions to make going forward when it comes to tagging our fortunes to oil.

I know this will annoy a lot of young folk on here but until they get off their backsides and go to the polling stations why should politicians care too much about what they think?

Under 24 were the only age grouping not to achieve 50% in the recent election.

Came on to post the exact same thing. Sitting on Twitter posting how outraged you are at the politicians will do **** all to change the world. The only way to change the world is to vote, yet the young refuse to vote, utterly baffling.

Both correct.[emoji23]
And while I’m supportive of young Greta because she draws attention to things, her solutions do not quite have science on her side. We would all be living in caves again if we followed her plan. She is also an extremist like the climate deniers. The answer, as always lies somewhere in the middle.

Maybe because politicians don't speak to young people. It's a vicious cycle really, young people don't vote so politicians ignore them so young people continue not to vote. The closest we had this time was a crusty 70s throwback who was like a slightly odd uncle.

The puppet media also love a pop at youngsters. Exam results improving year on year? Exams are easier than in 'our' day. Can't afford to buy a house? It's because you have an iPhone. Have a mental illness? It's because you use Instagram. Concerned about climate change? Bet you used to get a lift to school you hypocrite. Drop in young people drinking? Lowest ever teen pregnancy rates? We'll find a damming statistic to focus on instead.

If I was lucky enough to be under 24 I probably wouldn't bother my erse to vote either. Suggest scrapping free TV licenses for retired people and half the country is up in arms. Suggest that higher education should be subsidised and you will be branded a dangerous commie and told you are a leach.

Does that arguement hold any water when they're probably different people?

I'd imagine people shouting on Twitter do actually vote. Those who don't care enough on polling day probably didn't care enough the week before to retweet something. :dunno:

It's not really a big point here - as generally the premise of getting young people engaged and voting should be encouraged. It's just something of a pet peeve of mine when it's been used in other circumstances before in order to invent some faux hypocrisy.
