Old VHS and video camera tapes to digital

Anyone know about how to do this? Can you buy software to do yourself at home or better getting it done by someone who knows what they are doing?

I have a stack of VHS tapes and smaller video camera cassettes that I’d like to transfer into digital format and into a you tube account or similar so can share with family.

If you do it yourself it’s not a quick process. Basically, whatever time length of tape you have is how long it will take to record into the digital format. You really do need ‘time’ and ‘patience’ to do it.

I’m sure there are converter/adapter gizmos you can buy to do this directly into a computer or laptop. Being honest I’ve not gone down that route though.

What I have done in the past is connect my VHS recorder to a DVD Hard Disk recorder I’ve got, then dub them from the hard disk on to single dvd using the same device. Once you’ve done that (and again it is time consuming) you can convert the single DVDs via a computer into a digital format suitable for tablets, mobiles, laptops, other portable devices.

However, if you feel you can’t be bothered with all that, I believe there’s a good company down Canonmills way who do this. I’ve not used them but have been considering going to them to get some old cine camera film my old man shot when we were kids. That’s a more specialised job but there website suggests they’ll do all types of manual recordings into digital. Yeah - it will cost - but if time is something you don’t have, might be worth considering.

http://transfermagic.co.uk/I was one step back. VHS to DVD. Then ripped the files and converted to MP4 (and retain a hard copy dvd). Picture quality is vhs of course but thats not the point.
