So it's a nice change to offer the lad some praise this week. Well done to him and all the team, and the guys in temporary charge.

Always thought there might be a striker in there lols. I think its notable that May chose to play Doidge today as part of a pair with Kamberi. Something many of us were shouting for but Hecks for some reason refused to countenance. Well done Doidge - may they be the first of many!

Both strikers played brilliant today. Some of his previous criticism was IMO merited, but that was some statement this afternoon from big Doidge :not worth But no point raking over the coals of previous negativity, your Hibs career starts now Christian, well done!

Absolutely delighted for the big man.

Hes had some criticism, some justified and some not. Always thought he was lacking confidence infront of goal so hopefully this kick starts his career with us and he starts banging them in.

A hat trick away to St Johnstone is some achievement for him, difficult place to go and up against s physical team.

Hi Heid Yin

I have been a critic of his, but today he made me eat my words, and I am delighted for him.

His partnership with Kamberi was the key to todays brilliant performance.

These two worked well together and hopefully we will reap the benefits of a two-pronged strike-force from here on.

Torto7
09-11-2019, 05:41 PM
You could see when he was playing up on his own that he still had the capability to win headers and take the ball in to his feet but no one was near enough to him. With Flo up front with him we have a couple of strikers who complement each other. They'll both have to put in shifts every week though to stop us getting outnumbered in midfield going forward.

Well done Doidge!

Chuffed for Doidge, rightly critical of his finishing but never got the sense he was doing anything other than giving 100% in every game....unlike some of our other summer recruits. Hopefully they see how quickly fortunes, and fans opinions, can change on the back of a good performance.

You could really see the relief on his face when that first one went in. Delighted for him today and hoping he can really push on now that he can build a bit of confidence.

One negative? He did try his hardest to mess that first one up and I worry about his all round finishing in the long term...

Superb from the team and Doidge, but Kamberi deserves a lot of praise too. Played in a 2, as we have all been saying, the partnership could flourish. They looked happier and more united too.

Top result at a very difficult venue for us over the years. May and the backroom team rightly deserve praise - interesting he said he wanted the players to express themselves which for me suggests the players were perhaps too concerned about Heckingbottom's detailed instructions/approach rather than feeling the freedom to just play.

Kevin Muscat was a name I heard today which may explain Kewell being at the game ?? Not sure how much of a connection they have together.

His manager at Forest Green said he plays better with a partner which Heckingbottom decided to ignore to his expense, just shows what a partner can do to a player, well done Doidge and the coaching staff to change things up and play to his strengths.

As someone who was most likely to do time if I read about his "all round game" once more I'm chuffed to see that having someone up top beside him brings out his goal scoring abilities.

Really pleased for him but it does show how confidence and a little stroke of luck changes things. The first goal - just watched on Alba - follows a really weak first effort and then you can see the weight lift off his shoulders.

Really chuffed for the lad. Its been a difficult start for him with Hibs and hes taken a fair amount of flak, much of which has been justified, he has fluffed a few sitters lets face it. Not easy trying to settle into a struggling team though I would imagine, lets kick on Christian and well done for today.

Yep, the benefit of 2 up top certainly paid off. For the first, we would have lost the ball in previous games but Doidge makes up great ground to get Kamberi's pass.

He also has good movement to get into position to finish the second.

Happy for him. Well done Doidge.

This. All the talk of his ‘all round game’ being good is rubbish IMO.

He’s a number 9, he needs to be in the box. And surprise surprise, he scored 3 goals between the width of the posts.

Other than that he touched the ball about 6 times. And I’m happy about that because Kamberi, who is far better in terms of playing football, was able to wander about and play football.

I said in another post we would only find out what the new players were like once they were played in their proper positions. Whether CD turns out to be a great signing for us we will just have to wait and see. However, it would appear that he is as suited to the lone striker role as Scott Allan is to wide right.

Spot on! Was going to post almost exactly that but you beat me to it. All he needed to do was break his duck and he got lucky with the rebound for the first but he missed easier ones against Aberdeen. That gave him the confidence. And that showed with two great finishes for his other goals.

I've said on umpteen threads that the modern day striker isn't really a striker but an attacker and can play across the front line, once Boyle get properly fit we'll have a 3 pronged attack as good as anything in the league. It still amazes me that Hecky didn't attempt to play with at least 2 attackers as it's obvious both of them prefer a partner and today's performance proved that.

Nope not having a laugh at all, he was getting played up front on his own which clearly doesnt suit his game, yip he should have had a few against aberdeen but he has shown when someone is up front with him that he can be an asset for us, folk made up their mind very quick about him and were very keen for him to fail

The second and third goals are the type of goals I want and expect him to get. Tap ins, poachers goals and in and around the 6 yard box.

Think sometimes he is guilty of coming to deep and then he’s busting a gut to get in the box often arriving too late or stretching for it.

With Flo up there with him, he will naturally drift wide and into areas of space where he can exploit teams.

His movement has always been an asset.

Know it’s a minority view but I (and maybe one other person on the train back from Pitoddrie) thought he had a good gave. S Aberdeen and created all the chances with his movement - sidefoots one to Scotty Allen and that would have been it - game over.

But he has desperately needed support up front and Flo provided this is spades. Great to see.

I was one of his defenders on here as we could see he was getting into the right positions to set up chances for himself without putting the ball in the net. Delighted to see big Doidge get on the scoresheet and hopefully will kick on from here. Some fans are far too quick to criticise. A good forward will always miss sitters now and then but it proves they're working hard and showing for the ball by engineering the opportunities in the first place.

I thought when he first came in that there was something there, he’s a different type to what we’ve had.

Then, over the last few weeks I’d started to change my mind. Where he was yesterday is where he needs to be. In the box, getting on the end of things. Between his Aberdeen horror show and yesterday I don’t think he’d even had a proper effort on goal. I never want to see us set up with him up front on his own again, unless we really have to.

A funny smell of shee-ite mixed in with reinventing history going on.

Lots of posters said he was performing ok in a bad team and would come good, based on his pedigree with a high quality club. Forest Green are a well run club who know how to develop players.

Lots of posters said he was performing crap, and hoped he'd improve. That was ok comment.

Lots of other posters said he was performing crap, and THEY KNEW 100% that he would never amount to anything. In my book, that's stupid talk and will make you look daft eventually.

the fact he was on his own up front getting balls lumped up to him which were easy for defenders to attack left him little option but to drop deep at times to at least try and get the ball at his feet. With two up front he doesn't need to do that as he showed yesterday.

I met him in Sainsbury's tonight. My wife was not looking so I slipped a bottle of finest Bordeaux into his shopping bag.
So, is he up for stealing first thing on Monday morning?????:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Seems to me he did start with a clean slate, and as a result he was nowhere near the team this week.

I thought he was excellent last night against the Dons. What a player we've got here!

Made me wonder, how would he compare with other 'target' men type players. For example, Mixu, Brewster, Gary O'Connor, Chris Killen, James Collins etc. I realise when typing this that there's a long list of journeymen that I've removed from my memory banks.

So a question, since Mixu which 'target' men type players would you place ahead of Doidge?

NOTE: I've obviously ignored Deeks, Leigh, Stokes, Fletcher etc as I think they were not 'target' men, but some may think otherwise.

Doidge works hard in all areas of the pitch He's a big upgrade on an ageing Grant Holt. Holt always gave eveything and I wish we had him many years ago. I can't think of many others in the same mould who had a habit of scoring in decent numbers each season.

Big man's been on fire. He's going to win us the Cup.

What a player he’s turned out to be for us. If ever there was an example of how fickle football fans are here it is and I’ll hold my hands up and take my medicine. The big man does his job ⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️

I was extremely critical of Doidge earlier in the year, largely based on my ignorance of his statistics with us and that was before he went on his latest scoring spree.

If ever there was proof positive of the effects of confidence then his scoring spree's last season and now this are it.

Good on you Christian, the rewards of hard work will eventually come to you if you persevere and this armchair critic has hopefully learned a lesson in patience.

Last 2 finishes have been things of beauty also, so he is still improving.

I’ll admit to being a hypocrite. With Scott Allan I focus on all the positive elements of his play and ignore the negatives. I’ve been guilty of doing the latter with Doidge. Not any longer.

Doidge is the definition of a streaky player, he'll go forever without scoring and then just suddenly hit an absolute hot streak and bang them in.

Fortunately it would appear that Doidge's hot streak has come at exactly the right time, on fire right now.

Need to sort a new contract out for him as a priority

Like many, I've really liked Doidge this season. He's become a very important player for us and I like the way he goes about his work. In the semi-final, I remarked that although he hadn't been involved a great deal in the first half, everything he did was good. He's been a really good outlet and tends to hold onto the ball really well. He's also taken a couple of goals very, very well recently.

He knows his abilities and limitations and plays to his strengths. He also comes across as a really decent guy from what I've seen from him in interviews etc.. the right kind of player to have in the team and around the club from what I can see.

This last bit won't go down well with a few people - but as above, he is a more limited player than some strikers. He's been really good for us and I will be more than happy to see him involved going forward, but I think some on here do go over the top on Christian (perhaps to make up for the past slagging he's taken, and in light of all the qualities I've noted above)... for example, I don't think anyone on here would claim he's better than Lawrence Shankland if Doidge didn't play for Hibs (and yes I know they are 'different players'). Admittedly I can't apply the same logic to those that would claim he's a better player than Nisbet (maybe its because Nisbet almost left :greengrin)... but ultimately there's 2 of the 3 that are very likely to sell for 7 figures in their careers.

But he's still the Artful Doidger and long may it continue :greengrin

It’s not even close.

Chris Killen went on a great goal scoring spree but went off to Celtc as soon as he could. Garry O blew hot and cold in both spells with us.

Brewster was a clever player, probably closest equivalent to Doidge in what he offered the team.

I too was a real critic of Doidge earlier in the season, yes he works hard but his finishing and first touch was at times brutal and I couldn't see how he was going to score. It's obvious he's a confidence player and when his head is down he struggles but when the confidence comes back he can't stop scoring and goes on these streaks. I'm very happy to be proved wrong about the big guy.

One of the things he's terrific at is keeping the ball live and in play when its pinging about in the box after a set piece. Can be relied on to be in there battling to get a head or a touch on it to keep it going and give himself or someone else a chance to get it over the line. Love that about him.

I know it’s not close between him and Collins, hence my comment.

Killen leaving for Celtic isn’t really any sort of reflection on how good he was though. And O’Connor was undoubtedly a better striker than Christian Doidge.. personalities a different matter.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets a call up from Wales for the Euros. His work rate is fantastic and must be a pest to play against. Nesbit is getting the coverage and a big money move seems likely but I actually think Doidge would cope better in the English Championship hopefully we will never find out.
