Reported he is taking the Stoke job and exiting his NI role. Strike him off our list of desirable but improbables.

Also begs the question of what that means for Nanny...new NI manager or emptied from two roles before Christmas?

Timing really surprises me if indeed thats the case. You would think he'd take the last 2 qualifiers for NI as still outside chance of qualifying. Money on offer must be good id imagine.

He'll be okay. He can leave the Hearts stuff off his CV and it'll still show he's been in continuous employment.

He was never on our list. £750k buy out clause & £1m per year salary made sure of that.

I hope it is the OP's mistake and not the Stoke chairman's by getting the wrong guy.

I am gonna stick my neck out and say it will end in failure and tears.

I think it will end with him being the next Hibs or Hearts manager when he does a Chris Coleman.

Did fantastically well with NI, looking extremely unlikely they will qualify for Euro 2020 now so don’t blame him for moving on. I think he will do a good job at Stoke, I wonder if he will take Austin MacPhee with him?

I'm surprised by this. I got the impression the NI job suited him (ie basing himself in Edinburgh with his family and only having to manage a small number of games each year) and the fact he's been in the job eight years suggested he'd decided he preferred it to club football. I'd imagine he could have stayed with NI for many more years to come had he wanted to. Why leave that for the gamble of a job which carries a high risk of the sack?

I can only assume the fact he's apparently going to double his £750k salary is why. Even if he gets punted a year down the line he'll have eared a cool £1.5 million.

He needs to make a strong start, something he didn’t do with NI.

Could be the 21st Century version of the Mark Caughey situation .

Probably the best that thing that ever happened to O’Neil not getting the Hibs job

I think he is. Stoke are allowing him to complete the NI campaign as a job share.
