I see that Liverpool will play Villa on 17 December at 19:45 GMT and will compete in the Club World Cup semi-final in Qatar the following day at 17:30 GMT.

I'm assuming we probably have done similar in the past. Anyone know?

Liverpool last played two games in two days way back in December 1986 under Kenny Dalglish when they lost 0-1 to Man Utd on Boxing Day before beating Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 on the 27th, both in the top-flight.

There is talk that they might pull out of the league cup unless the date is switched.

I think I'm right in saying that it was common practice for Scottish Clubs to play on both 1st and 2nd January at one time.

They are not pulling out of the league cup, first team squad will travel to Qatar. The league cup squad will be made up of the youngsters.

There are plenty of examples in the 40s and 50s when games were played on both the 1st and 2nd / 3rd January.

As above,it was commonplace to play on Jan 1 & Jan 2 into the sixties. In about 1950 we played 3 games in 4 days, won them all IIRC & didn't concede a goal. The same 11 players were on the park for every minute of the 3 games.

Real men in those days!

70/71. Hearts on the 1st, Cowdenbeath on the 2nd.
In 68/69 we played on the 1st, 2nd and 4th Jan against Hearts, Raith Rovers and Falkirk.

Shambles of a situation. English football probably needs to bin the league cup. Their fixture congestion is always dreadful this time of year.

We also played Rangers in the league 5 days before our cup final against Clyde in 1958. Joe Baker was unfit so Lawrie Reilly played & scored in his last match at the age of 29. Joe replaced Lawrie in the final but was only half fit, Andy Aitken got injured early on & was a passenger from then on & of course we lost 1 0 to a deflected goal! It only took us another 58 years to win the Cup!

Might be wrong here.

Hearts 7-0 on the 1st and 1-0 v East Fife on the 2nd, Brownlie broken leg and Edwards sent off

Wrong. Beat Aberdeen 3-2 on December 30th, Hearts on 1st and East Fife on the 6th.

Mental to think that the 1958 final was basically slap bang in the middle of the 1902 and 2016 finals

In mid 70s we played a league match at Parkhead (lost 4-2) on a Saturday and beat Meadowbank 6-0 at ER 24 hours later

Mickey was booked, not sent off but it meant an 8 game suspension. We lost our next game 1-0 at Tannadice in what I think was Andy Gray's last game for Arabs.

If I remember correctly it was an eight week suspension, not 8 games.
Ridiculous.

1959 was the halfway point, so yeah, thereabouts.

Just done the calculations, Saturday 9th May 1959 was the exact halfway date. The season was over and Hibs didn't have a game. Congratulations to anyone born on that date! You were born exactly halfway between our last two Scottish Cup wins.
