My Dad took unwell in the West Stand upper with 5 mins to go yeaterday. He’s comfortable and making good progress in hospital now but I wanted to say a huge thank you to all the fans that helped him (Yvonne, David and others), the paramedics - including Andy (another west stand Hibbie), the medical staff and the police & outriders who got him to ERI pronto. Anyone who’s been there knows the staff are amazing and he’s getting great care. GGTTH

Good to hear - I saw someone on twitter (your sister I assume) letting Hibs know that while the medical staff were great that the reaction (and knowledge) from the stewards left a bit to be desired.

Given that they are the first port of call, I hope that this is taken on board by Hibs and the stewarding company.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk glad to hear your dad doing fine, I was standing next to the security guard when you asked him where the first aid point was and he didn’t have a clue, but you were pointed in the right direction by us the fans.

Hibs tick a box of x stewards per 100/1000 supporters.
Stewards are hired by the supplying company on a low wage and if you pay peanuts you get monkeys. It's no reflection on the stewards as people but they are just students and other folk looking to earn an extra couple of quid. They are poorly trained uniform carriers working at random events across the country.
Stewards are massively cheaper than the cops that previously looked after matches but they are not highly trained professionals used to thinking on their feet and dealing with anything thrown at them on a daily basis. IMO it would be much better to have half the number of stewards but specialists who are much better trained and paid.

A big well done to everyone who made sure this Hibs supporter received the help and assistance he needed.
Best Wishes to the man himself and his family.

Glad to hear your dads making good progress and hope he's back at ER soon.

I sit a few rows in front of him and the lack of organisation to get him help at the time was obvious. The medics came up the wrong stairs by time they got to right one the game had finished and people were leaving using the stair the medics needed to use slowing them down. Surely when something like this happens there should be one contact for the nearest steward to reach out to. Advise the stair number and someone meet the medics and take them there. Other nearby stewards attend and get fans to leave by other staircase leaving the medics with easier access.

I saw the medical staff on my way out coming up the stairs nearest the Dunbar End. There was 4 or 5 struggling against the tide and I thought it would have been better if stewards had held us in position for a few minutes. Glad it all worked out and he is on the mend.

“If you pay peanuts you get monkeys” you then say it’s no reflection on the stewards themselves! A piss poor comment and one that really riles me when folk are judged on their earnings which is a total nonsense and so condescending.

Anyway to the OP sorry to hear your Dad took ill at the game and wish him well on his road to recovery.

My friend took ill. Steward hadn't a clue what to do. Wandered around looking for help eventually he was directed to first aid room right behind us. Once there could not fault first aiders and paramedics

In essence what i said was that stewards are basically a body in a uniform to meet a quota and that the vast majority don't have the specialist skills and experience that allows them to take control and deal with a fast moving emergency situation effectively. Do you disagree?

I did not judge the stewards as people on their earnings and you have deliberately taken my comments out of context to make your point by quoting only a small part of my post. A career beckons for you in the red tops. However, I do agree it wasn't a good idea to use the quoted phrase.

I'm glad your Dad is doing OK.. but this does highlight a possible issue when it comes to First Aid in the Stadium.

In my experience, the stewards don't seem to be aware of a number of things on match days (such as which ticket booths are open, which are for away fans only and for which stands they can sell them). Hibs need to do more to ensure important information is communicated to them that actually might be useful to the customer, or to be aware of what to do in an emergency.

In any emergency I'd be ignoring all stewards - they know f all, get in the way and imo are a hindrance rather than a help.

It's a dangerous misconception that they can do anything positive as in an emergency situation valuable seconds or minutes can be vital. The stewards are particularly dangerous as they are visible and people will assume that they know what they are doing and trust them when the opposite is true.

I don't think it will be long until a major incident happens somewhere and serious questions will be asked about stewards, their training and the balance we now see between stewards and properly trained personnel at big events.

It's not just football - gigs, festivals etc are all the same.

And that's before you get on to some of the cretins we've had at Ibrox and Tynie who seem to be there to antagonise the away support.

Totally agree. When you pay peanuts you get capable staff that are not particularly well trained due to nature of shareholders and procurement. What people are paid is no reflection on their capability.

This should be one for the fans reps. We can't take chances with the safety of supporters. There is a reason we are FANatics and that means we may come out when not too well and put ourselves through an emotional roller coaster. Not saying that is the case here but there are a number of people fall ill every year and we need to get this right.
