Looking from the outside, this seems long overdue. It seems his influence has taken a long time to dissipate though, to the extent I wonder how much of the population still see him as a hero.

About half of the population! The wounds of the civil war are still raw in Spain eighty years on. It split families, friends, colleagues and is still avoided in conversation to a large degree, such is the animosity it still provokes.

In basic terms what was the civl war about and why does it still have such an effect on people?
I ask this because it is an event I know exactly nothing about, in spite of having visited Spain many times and having a decent interest in history.

Fascism is still alive and well in Spain unfortunately. Franco is celebrated every year with parades thar include groups of people giving facist salutes.

That was well worth the ten minutes viewing time. Thanks.
My stepmother is Spanish. Her dad was killed during the civil war. She still hates Franco with a passion and all he stood for, understandably.
Reminders, like the sellers of the lotto type thing and maybe Tabac shops, only going to Franco's followers and their families irks her. Other government licenses too. Its maybe not much but it's a daily reminder.
