This is a very interesting article about why the CIA failed to take Bin Laden seriously.

They never took him seriously, because it never really had anything to do with him.

Interesting, but what it doesn't do is tell us why WASP agents would be incapable of learning about cultural differences. In fact, the massive assumption about the WASP mindset appears to be pretty much what the CIA is bring accused of in the first place.
Not saying that such a culture didn't exist - I don't know - but it's not proven by this article.

Did you watch "the Looming Tower"?
It's based on the accounts of FBI agents who essentially contend that the CIA knew al-Qaeda were sending terrorists in to the US but withheld the info from the FBI because they didn't want them arrested. They wanted the known operatives to be left at large to lead them to Bin Laden & the other high heid yins. Obviously that turned out to be more than a bit reckless. The CIA were also advocating essentially bombing the **** out of anywhere they thought Bin Laden might be, with potentially thousands of deaths, a long time before 9/11.
Good/interesting telly.

I didn't see it, but it does sound interesting.
Allowing criminals and terrorist's to remain at large so they can be watched and followed is a common tactic, but it obviously has its risks.
I also have no doubt that there were people advocating that sort of action against Bin Laden. You don't declare war against the USA and expect the hawks to react calmly.
Bin Laden etc wanted to provoke the USA into a war so it's actually surprising that it took so long for them to finally succeed.

The show is based on a book with the same name that I'd highly recommend. Incredibly detailed analysis of what happened and why.
