Says on tin- you been there, you think you are anywhere near understanding, comments received, the nonsense on main forum from knuckle draggers is what it is, the personal attacks, the generalisations, on the closed thread, speak for theirselves, the posters are fools coming away with that nonsense, the view of not many people knowing & caring about South America is typical bullying.

Ask away, you experts on South America. Personally, having spent time working & living there with loads of quality people who I now call friends, the stereotype drug barons & ladyboys nonsense is tiring at times to me, who knows what it’d be like to someone from there, lots of class on display before on this quality site, strengthened by your solid ‘WTF’- I suggest if you’ve not got anything negative or positive to say about a place, possibly because you’ve never even BEEN there, save it for what you actually DO know about!

it was more a lazy stereotype but certainly not needing a rant which needed the Rosetta stone to work out.

Well I for one will be boycotting the forum until this lazy stereotyping stops.

If I see Aberdeen fans accused of bothering sheep, Celtic fans told to have a wash or Hearts fans painted as cardigan wearing, Rover driving, sexually frustrated bores I swear I'll do time. Actually the last one is probably true.

PS I've been to South America and used a 'mind altering substance' there. I'm not sure if that makes me a stereotype or not.

Chile is the longest country in the world from North to South.

I don't know which country boasts the greatest distance east to west, but am tormented by the thought that it would be the widest country in the world east to west, rather than the longest east to west. I feel that in saying this I may be guilty of an unduly Mercatorist world view.

I have never been to South America or spoken to a ladyboy.

I have never been to South America or spoken to a ladyboy.

Mrs R and I were walking in a street, similar in size to Rose Street, which had been pedestrianised for the weekend. It was very pleasant, but I can't remember in which part of Thailand we were.

There were stalls offering Mojitos and bottles of Singha, Thai street food, and all sorts of arts and crafts. It was very pleasant.

As we walked along we noticed people handing out leaflets, a la Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and we were approached by a stunning beauty. They had clearly spent a considerable amount of time doing their make up, but rather than look cheap and overdone, it was very classy and endearing. Petit and slim, they are still one of the most stunningly beautiful people I've ever met.

We had a brief conversation about their show, where it was and start time, and ascertained it was singing and dancing with some gentle comedy. We took a leaflet and wandered off.

When we eventually stopped at a bar for a drink, I had a closer look at the leaflet, and there, on the front page, was the person who we'd spoken to a few minutes earlier, advertising a glamorous Ladyboy show.

We didn't go to the show, partly because of our own inhibitions, but also because it sort of feels like you're not going to enjoy the entertainment the artists are creating, rather that the artists themselves are the entertainment.

I'm sure that's exactly what the show was about, but it just didn't feel right. Sort of bearded lady in reverse. A "freak show" as they used to be delightfully called.

So I have spoken to a ladyboy, but I've never oggled one, well, not inappropriately, I hope.

I must remember to pack my mirror sunglasses in case I see any in Rio. 😎

I found that a couple of times using Google but I’m not convinced those figures included the islands at the southern tip of Chile.

Anyway, Chile has a territorial claim on part of Antarctica so I’m assuming that gives them the victory!!!

Canada is even longer from north to south than both Chile and Brazil, but when you include Antarctic Territories in the mix the winner is Norway!

I have been to Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Bolivia in all too short visits which left me with a great impression about South American geography, history and culture.

In December 2020 we are back to Buenos Aires and then sail from Ushuaia to Antarctica and will visit Chile afterwards on the same trip.

It is on my bucket list to travel to Venezuela and see Monte Roraima and Colombia to see Cartagena. Then there is the Arian 5 launch of the JWST (https://jwst.nasa.gov/content/about/launch.html) in 2021 which will be from French Guyana.

I suspect Europe has done far more damage to South America than they have done to us thus far in history.
