Haven't seen a thread for this year and thought a place to share recommendations could benefit people looking for a show.

Went to my first show tonight, just went along to someone I hadn't heard of before since it was preview prices. Definitely worth the gamble.

Micky Bartlett - Bristo square 9:15pm.

Just a funny guy from northern Ireland in a small venue with a good variety of jokes.

Booked up a few for Monday and Tuesday to take advantage of the 2for1 days: News Revue, Colin Cloud, Choir of Man, Foil Arms and Hog.

Tickets so far for:

The Antiques Joke Show which is comedians performing deliberately out of date material.

Just The Tonic midnight show at the Caves.

Also taking the bairn to see the Amazing Bubble Man at Udderbelly.

As always I'll be sticking to my no more than £12 a ticket rule. Any established acts charging £30 a pop are everything the Fringe wasn't supposed to be about so won't be getting my money.

Was at Foil Arms and Hog tonight. Really good and pretty funny. Worth a visit to see them :aok:

Went to see Andrew Maxwell and Frank Skinner tonight. Both very good. Don't go and see Maxwell if you voted for Brexit! Frank Skinner was so polished and hilarious. Could have stayed for another hour.

Colin Cloud on Friday, loved his shows the last 2 years.

Jason Byrne on Monday. Always good.

Would’ve loved tickets for Stewart Lee but they’re sold out.

I was at Maxwell tonight too. Thought he was poor. Nowhere near his usual standard. I know it was a preview but he kept referring to his notes.

Followed that with Tom Stade who was, by contrast, outstanding. Proper laugh out loud.

Great bargains to had until Sunday on the preview circuit.

Nina Conte was another with her monkeys, she was brill too

Milton Jones, and Henning Wehn. Also taking the grandkids to a couple of shows, Basil Brush being one that I am particularly looking forward to.

He’s at 3 on Chamber St in the Big Yin theatre. Tickets £8 until Sunday. Was only about 40 folk there last night.

Going to see Basil Brush tonight.

What are the rules about plugging your own shows on here. Playing a gig a week tonight which is not strictly part of the Fringe but at the same time as it!!

Interesting to read your comments re Maxwell. My missus liked that it was a bit 'raw' and preferred him to Skinner, who she thought was too polished! Regarding referring to notes, I saw Stephen K Amos a couple of years ago doing a 'work in progress' and he just stood with a clipboard, ticking off his jokes and noting how well or not they had gone down. Was weird to start with, but got used to it after a while. Suppose it's a trade-off against the cheaper than usual prices.

Micky Bartlett performs regularly on the comedy circuit.
Always decent. My wife likes him. He is a natural, nothing forced.

Frank Skinner is sold out. Was too slow off the mark.
Believe these shows are prep for a UK tour later in the year

Tom Stade is outstanding if sober.
I once saw him at The Stand and his 1st 15 minutes was as good as any comedian I have ever seen but then the booze kicked in and a nasty car crash ensued.

Limmy on Friday, Stewart Lee week on Friday :)

Stewart Lee is the best. His wife Bridget Christie rips his style off but is also exceptional.

I would be interested to hear what you think of the Limmy show.

Saw Mr Thing last night. Daft but it's a great show. Worth a watch at least once.

Seann Walsh and Phil Wang on Saturday night.

Seann Walsh good, Phil Wang not so. Thought it would be the other way around.

Got a picture with a comedy hero though, David Mitchell (Peep Show)

Got Craig Hill & Jimeoin tonight. Still plenty half price & 2 for 1 deals available. Better than sitting in the house on a Sunday night.

Saw Tom Stade last night. Very funny. Quite close to the bone at times too, which made it even funnier imo. Didn't seem to be up everyone's street though. One or two stoney faced throughout!

Just out of Goose's Quizzes vs The Fringe. Brilliant.

Great laugh, comedy guest, few pints and a quiz :greengrin

Craig Hill was excellent. First time seeing him and not at all what I expected. Almost entirely banter with the crowd virtually no story/joke telling. Really enjoyed it.

Jimeoin was good, not the best I’ve seen him but still very funny. Another who revered to notes a few times but it was a preview again so non complaints. He’ll get better as the festival goes on. Just a naturally funny guy.

Went to NewsRevue and Colin Cloud last night.

Both good shows and sold out which is always nice to see (easier on the 2for1 days!).

Newsrevue is a funny political musical sketch show. Colin cloud a mind reader/illusionist - his stuff was all good apart from 1 trick which was poorly done.

Very much looking forward to Foil Arms and Hog this evening, went to see them every year since I done some flyering for them in 2011 and they've never disappoint yet.

We were at the show last night. I assume you mean the trick right at the end?

Dont want to say anything more

Seen them at the first preview show last Wednesday and it was brilliant. Maybe thinking about going to see them again before the fringe ends.

They were brilliant again. :agree:

My only criticism would be that last night lasted 45-50 minutes!

The as hoc interactions with the crowd are as brilliant as their sketches.

If you like them I'd recommend their Facebook/YouTube channel - they post little sketches weekly. :aok:

Also went to Fast Fringe last night which I enjoyed. A dozen comedians giving you a taste of their set for 3/4 minutes. The pleasance Ace Dome is also one of the better venues IMO, a bit more leg room and tables around the sides and back are good for groups. Line up changes every night too, so I'll probably end up back there again.

Already subscribed to their facebook and youtube channel. :aok:

I've been to a couple of kid's shows with my 7 year old son-

Dinosaur zoo - large, realistic dinosaur puppets. Decent for young kids.

Doodle pop - We both really enjoyed this show from Korea. The performers interact with their own drawings and animation, quirky and very well done.

Tonight I'm going to see David Rudolf, the lawyer involved in the staircase and tomorrow, the lawyers involved in Making a Murderer. Next week I'm going to see Nick Helm, Phil Wang and Jerry Sadowitz. And finally, I'm going to see Colonel Mustard and the Dijon 5 playing at Dr Bells in Leith.

Came across Doodle Pop in Bristo Square. Our four year old grandson thought they were great.

Max and Ivan have a fantastic show this year, they've put together a great variety of jokes. I left it saying it was the funniest thing I'd ever seen at the Fringe.

I also went to Fast Fringe again; one of the comedians wore a t-shirt with "1975" on it, the 7 doubling up as a harp. Not seen it before but smart and obviously a Hibs top. Ray something, anyone any idea who he is? Didn't see him handing out flyers after the show with the other acts.

I saw Harry Baker, poet/comedian, at the Underbelly Cowgate. Brilliant stuff and good to see it almost sold out. Not to everyone’s taste so I’d check him out on YouTube before deciding to go or not.

Today I saw the grayson Perry exhibition, hebridean treasure, the beautiful game, had a gin tour at pickerings gin and finished the day at Queens Hall for songs of the sixties.

Probably give hebridean treasure a miss but everything else was worth it.

Anyone else going to see Stuart Cosgrove at the book festival tonight? He’s talking about his Harlem 69 book, looking forward to it.
